Verdict: The Zenith Chronomaster Original 38mm (reference 03.3200.3600/69.C902) is compelling if you want historically faithful A386 proportions with a modern 5Hz chronograph. Its compact steel case, tri-colour dial and true 1/10-second display are distinctive; the main compromises are the dense dial, 5 ATM water resistance and a Canadian list price of CA$14,400. Zenith does not publish a complete thickness or lug-width specification for this reference, and no independent daily accuracy result is established here.
What the Chronomaster Original 38mm is
This reference recreates the proportions of Zenith’s 1969 A386 in a 38mm stainless-steel case. It pairs the vintage-style tri-colour dial with the automatic El Primero 3600 high-frequency chronograph and a blue leather strap. Pump-style pushers, faceted tapered lugs and a domed, box-shaped sapphire crystal reinforce the historical design without using a period movement.

Design and everyday wear
A386 proportions in a compact case
The 38mm diameter is the defining wearing characteristic. It follows the historic A386’s compact proportions rather than the larger dimensions common to contemporary sports chronographs. That makes the watch suitable for wrists that find 41–42mm chronographs excessive, while the short, shaped lugs help preserve the vintage profile.
Vintage details, modern crystal
Faceted lugs and pump pushers provide the period cues. The domed or box-shaped sapphire crystal gives the dial the visual distortion associated with older chronographs while offering modern scratch resistance. The tri-colour layout is immediately recognizable, but its several sub-dials and scales make the display information-dense. Buyers who prefer a restrained, time-only dial may find it busy; chronograph enthusiasts will see that density as part of the appeal.

How the El Primero 3600 chronograph works
What 5Hz means
The El Primero 3600 runs at 36,000 vibrations per hour, or 5Hz. Zenith pairs that frequency with a central chronograph indication graduated to 1/10 second. The high beat rate is therefore visible in the chronograph’s readout rather than being a claim that the watch will gain or lose a specific number of seconds per day.
Accuracy: what is and is not established
No measured daily rate, positional test or independent timing result is established for this review. A 5Hz movement can support finer chronograph resolution, but it does not by itself guarantee a particular real-world accuracy result. If a precise rate matters, request the individual watch’s timing data from the boutique or have it tested after purchase.

Power reserve
Zenith specifies approximately 60 hours of power reserve. That is enough to set the watch aside for a weekend and still have a reasonable chance of it continuing to run, although actual autonomy varies with winding state and use of the chronograph.
Water resistance and practical limits
The rating is 5 ATM. Treat that as protection for ordinary splashes and daily wear, not as a specification for swimming, diving or high-pressure water activities. Ensure the crown and pushers are fully secured, and do not operate the chronograph underwater. For frequent water use, a watch with a higher rating and a more explicitly sport-oriented case is the safer choice.

What strap fits the Chronomaster Original 38mm?
The cited reference is supplied on a blue leather or calfskin strap, with wording varying by market listing. The official material available for this reference does not state the lug width, so a replacement strap should not be ordered from the 38mm case diameter alone.
Replacement-strap checklist
- Confirm the lug width for reference 03.3200.3600/69.C902 with Zenith or an authorized retailer.
- Check whether the replacement uses straight ends or requires a shaped/end-link profile.
- Match the buckle width and spring-bar diameter before ordering.
- Choose leather for a period-appropriate look; use a water-resistant material only with the understanding that it does not increase the watch’s 5 ATM rating.
Price and value
Zenith’s Canadian online boutique listed CA$14,400 for reference 03.3200.3600/69.C902 on October 1, 2026. That figure applies to the steel, tri-colour-dial model described here and should not be treated as a universal global price.

- Item shape: Tonneau
Zenith’s US site listed US$14,500 for a different Chronomaster Original Triple Calendar reference, 03.3400.3610/38.C911. It is not a like-for-like price comparison with the 38mm three-register reference, because the model, complication and reference number differ.

- A distinctive tri-colour dial and sapphire crystal that combine vintage styling with contemporary materials.

What may limit the value
- The dial’s density is not for every wearer.
- 5 ATM water resistance is modest for a modern chronograph.

- The CA$14,400 list price places it firmly in the five-figure luxury-watch category.
Who should buy it?
It makes sense for
- Collectors who specifically want A386 styling in a wearable 38mm format.
- Buyers who value a genuine 1/10-second chronograph display rather than a conventional elapsed-seconds hand.
- Owners seeking a distinctive enthusiast watch rather than an understated everyday three-hander.
Look elsewhere if
- You need a published slimness, lug-width or lug-to-lug measurement before buying.
- You regularly swim or need robust water resistance.
- You prefer a simple dial or want independently documented accuracy figures before committing.
Buying checklist for this exact reference
- Verify that the watch is reference 03.3200.3600/69.C902, not a Chronomaster Original Triple Calendar or another 38mm variant.
- Confirm the current price and local taxes with a Canadian Zenith boutique or authorized retailer; the CA$14,400 figure is a dated Canadian listing, not a permanent worldwide price.
- Ask the seller to confirm the supplied strap material and the lug width for replacement planning.
- Request timing information if daily accuracy is important, since the 5Hz specification does not substitute for a rate test.
- Inspect the crystal, pushers and crown, and keep water exposure within the 5 ATM rating.
