The correct Speedmaster bezel is identified by its dot positions, typography, tachymeter layout and production-era context—not by the reference number alone. On vintage watches, the key distinction is usually between a DON (Dot Over Ninety) bezel and the later DNN arrangement, while a documented “220” printing is a rare 1970 misprint.
Why the bezel matters
The tachymeter bezel is a defining Speedmaster feature. In 1957, the CK2915 became the first chronograph wristwatch with its tachymeter scale printed on the bezel rather than the dial, a layout intended for racing-car drivers.
Because Omega changed the bezel design over time, the bezel can help date a watch and assess whether its visible configuration makes sense. It cannot, by itself, prove originality: bezels were replaced, transitional watches exist, and limited editions may use different designs.
The visual clues collectors use
Dot position around 90
DON means “Dot Over Ninety.” The dot sits above the 90 numeral. This is the most familiar vintage-bezel shorthand, but it should be treated as a physical feature rather than an automatic reference-number match.

Later bezels commonly use the DNN or “dot-next-to-90” arrangement. The dot appears beside 90 in the upper-right area instead of directly above it.
Dot position around 70
On DON examples, the dot near 70 is in the lower-right position. Later bezels generally place the dot beside 70 in the middle position. Check both the 90 and 70 areas; using only one dot can lead to a false identification.

Typography and the accent in TACHYMÈTRE
Compare the numeral shapes, letter spacing and overall font. Collectors also check whether TACHYMÈTRE includes the accented È. These details distinguish period variants, but they should be evaluated alongside the complete watch configuration rather than used as an isolated authenticity test.
Scale layout and spacing
Look at the spacing of the tachymeter graduations, the alignment of the numerals and the relationship between the scale and the bezel edge. A bezel can have broadly familiar lettering yet still be wrong for a particular period or replacement part.

DON, DNN and the 145.022 family
The 145.022 chronology is useful, but it is not a substitute for inspecting the actual bezel.
| Watch context | Typical bezel clue | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| 145.022-68 Transitional | DON is commonly associated with this configuration | A strong period clue, but confirm the rest of the watch and evidence of originality. |
| Some 145.022-69 examples | DON can occur | Not every 145.022-69 is DON; the reference alone cannot settle the question. |
| 145.022-71 and later chronology in the buying guide | DNN is generally expected, with the dot next to 90 | Use the bezel’s geometry, typography and the watch’s serial-era evidence together. |
This is why the question “Does my 145.022-69 have the correct bezel?” has no universal yes-or-no answer. Some examples are associated with DON bezels, while others may correctly carry a later design. The watch’s delivery configuration, parts history and other period details matter.

Where the major bezel families fit
Fratello’s practical grouping divides common Speedmaster bezels into three broad families:
- Pre-1970: early vintage designs, including the period in which DON characteristics are especially important.
- 1970 to the mid-1990s: later vintage and early modern variations, including changes in dot placement, printing and typography.
- Mid-1990s to modern: modern-era bezels whose markings should be judged against the specific reference and edition.
These are useful orientation bands, not rigid rules. Transitional watches, limited editions and replacement parts create exceptions.

The unusual “220” bezel
A documented 1970 misprint shows 220 where 200 should appear on the tachymeter scale. It is recognized as a rarity, not a normal production marker for every 1970 Speedmaster. The numeral must be considered with the rest of the bezel’s printing and the watch’s provenance.
How to check a bezel before buying
- Record the watch details. Note the full reference, serial-era information, movement, dial, hands and case. Photograph the bezel straight on in good light.
- Inspect the 90 and 70 dots. Decide whether the 90 dot is above or beside the numeral, then check whether the 70 dot is in the lower-right or middle position.
- Read the printing closely. Compare the font, spacing, numeral forms and the presence or absence of the È accent in TACHYMÈTRE.
- Check the scale. Look for consistent graduation spacing and a layout appropriate to the watch’s era. Treat a 220 marking as a specific documented misprint, not as proof of authenticity.
- Compare the whole configuration. A bezel that looks right must also make sense with the movement, dial, hands, case, serial-era evidence and any documented delivery information.
- Investigate replacement signs. Review service history, mismatched wear, damaged edges, adhesive traces and an unusually pristine bezel on an otherwise aged watch. These clues are not conclusive individually, but they justify further checking.
- Obtain specialist advice for a high-value purchase. A vintage specialist can assess the bezel together with the watch rather than grading it from a single photograph.
Originality, condition and collecting priorities
Why a visually attractive bezel may be wrong
Older Speedmasters have often received replacement bezels during service or restoration. A sharp, clean bezel can therefore be less valuable to a historically focused collector than a worn bezel that is correct for the watch’s period.
Time-correct versus exact “grail” specification
A time-correct bezel is a sensible target for many collections. Chasing an exact, exceptionally rare variant can add substantial cost and effort, and the most desirable part may not be necessary for the collecting goal. Rare correct bezels can be expensive, so establish whether you value factory-delivery originality, period correctness or simply an attractive and functional watch before paying a premium.
What markings cannot establish
- A DON or DNN layout does not independently authenticate the watch.
- A 145.022 reference does not guarantee one bezel style across every example.
- The presence of an accent, a particular font or the 220 misprint is evidence to weigh, not a standalone certificate of originality.
A practical decision rule
If the bezel’s dot geometry, typography and scale agree with the reference-era evidence and the rest of the watch shows no replacement concerns, it is plausibly period-correct. If those clues conflict, treat the watch as having an uncertain bezel until its service history, delivery records or specialist inspection resolve the discrepancy.
For deeper Speedmaster research, collectors often consult Alberto Isnardi’s reference book alongside period photographs and specialist assessments.
