Rolex’s first rubber-style bracelet was not a simple molded rubber strap. Oysterflex places flexible, curved metal blades inside a high-performance black elastomer exterior. The elastomer supplies the supple feel and rubber-like appearance; the hidden blades provide structure, load-bearing strength and bracelet integrity. That division of labor is the subtle innovation behind Oysterflex.
When did Rolex introduce Oysterflex?
Rolex introduced Oysterflex in 2015 on the Yacht-Master 37. The launch also included a Yacht-Master 40 in 18 ct Everose gold. Rolex describes Oysterflex as a design it developed and patented for the demands of its Professional watches.
The Yacht-Master was the first Rolex watch equipped with Oysterflex. That model family remains the bracelet’s clearest home, although the range later expanded in size and precious-metal combinations.

Is Oysterflex actually rubber?
Not in the sense of an all-rubber strap. Rolex calls the outer material a high-performance elastomer. Underneath it are two flexible metal blades, one in each bracelet section, overmoulded by that elastomer.

Elastomer is responsible for the soft, close-to-the-wrist contact and the black rubber-like appearance. The metal blades perform the structural work that ordinary molded rubber cannot provide as effectively: they support the bracelet, resist deformation and preserve its overall integrity. Oysterflex therefore looks and feels like a rubber strap while being engineered as a metal-bracelet alternative.
Why does Oysterflex have metal inside?
Rolex’s stated objective is to combine the robustness and reliability of a metal bracelet with the flexibility, comfort and aesthetics of an elastomer strap. The internal blades make that combination possible.

What the elastomer contributes

What the blades contribute

This is why describing Oysterflex simply as “Rolex’s rubber strap” misses the important engineering point. Its innovation is the hidden hybrid construction, not merely the choice of a dark flexible material.
How does Oysterflex adjust?
Oysterflex-equipped Yacht-Master models use an Oysterlock safety clasp with Rolex’s Glidelock extension system. The system has six toothed notches, each approximately 2.5 mm apart, for up to approximately 15 mm of adjustment.

That range allows a wearer to fine-tune the fit without changing the bracelet section itself. The exact result still depends on the watch reference and the sizes of the bracelet sections fitted to it.
Does Oysterflex fit every Yacht-Master?
No. Oysterflex is associated with the Yacht-Master, but compatibility is reference-specific. A correct installation depends on the case geometry, end-fit dimensions, clasp and the bracelet-section sizes supplied for that watch.

A replacement listing should therefore never be treated as universally compatible. Before buying or fitting one, verify:
- The exact Yacht-Master reference and case size.
- The required left- and right-side bracelet section sizes.
- End-fit and clasp geometry.
- Whether the part is genuine Rolex or an aftermarket product.
The 37 mm, 40 mm and 42 mm Yacht-Master configurations should not be assumed to share interchangeable bracelet sections simply because they use the Oysterflex name.

Why Oysterflex was significant
Before Oysterflex, the choice was usually framed as metal bracelet versus rubber strap: metal offered structure and a formal integrated look, while rubber offered softness and a sportier appearance. Oysterflex narrows that gap by assigning each material a different job.
The result suits the Yacht-Master’s sailing-oriented brief. It gives the wearer a flexible black exterior and a comfortable wrist contact while retaining an internal framework designed for the reliability Rolex expects from a Professional watch. That is the product significance behind the phrase “game changer.” Rolex does not publish an independent sales figure establishing a quantified commercial effect, so the phrase is best understood as an interpretation of the design’s influence and importance, not a measured market result.
What to know before buying an Oysterflex replacement
Searches for an “Oysterflex replacement strap” can return both genuine Rolex components and aftermarket straps described as compatible with a Yacht-Master. They are not equivalent products.
- Confirm the watch reference before considering fit.
- Check whether the listing identifies the bracelet-section sizes and clasp arrangement.
- Distinguish a genuine Oysterflex bracelet from a plain rubber strap using similar wording.
- Use an authorized Rolex service channel when authenticity, installation or long-term fit matters.
An aftermarket strap may reproduce the color or general shape without reproducing the internal blades, overmoulding process, clasp interface or reference-specific geometry of genuine Oysterflex.
