Limited to 2,000 pieces, it paired Mario-themed hardware and animated activity rewards with TAG Heuer’s Connected platform. Its original launch prices were reported as US$2,150, €2,000 and A$3,100; those are historical prices, not current resale values. In 2026, buyers are more likely to encounter old stock or a pre-owned example, where battery condition, software and authenticity deserve as much attention as the Mario details.
What was the TAG Heuer Connected x Super Mario Limited Edition?
Launched on July 15, 2021, the watch was the first Mario edition in a TAG Heuer and Nintendo collaboration. TAG Heuer said production was limited to 2,000 pieces. It is a digital smartwatch with a luxury-watch case, interchangeable straps, TAG Heuer software and connected features—not a mechanical watch with a Mario-themed movement. TAG Heuer’s year-end review also lists it among the brand’s 2021 releases (TAG Heuer launch material; TAG Heuer’s 2021 retrospective).

The idea fits Mario’s familiar themes of movement, progress and rewards. Here, that connection takes the form of a playful layer over daily activity tracking; it should not be mistaken for a new or clinically oriented fitness system.
How the design incorporates Mario
The launch specifications identify a 45 mm steel case measuring 13.5 mm thick, with 5 ATM water resistance. Red lacquer accents the bezel graduations and pushers. The bezel also marks three Mario references: a Super Mushroom at 3 o’clock, a pipe at 6, and a Super Star at 9. The crown carries a Mario “M,” while the screw-down caseback is engraved with the limited-edition wording. The steel folding clasp is branded with the “M.”

Quick-change straps let owners switch between the two supplied options: black leather over red rubber, or red perforated rubber. The 45 mm diameter and 13.5 mm thickness make fit a significant consideration, especially on a smaller wrist. TAG Heuer’s launch material specifies steel; Hodinkee described the case as titanium, so published descriptions conflict. The manufacturer’s specification is the basis for the steel description here (TAG Heuer launch material; Hodinkee’s description).
How the Mario activity system works
The pre-installed animated face uses progress toward the wearer’s daily step target to reveal a sequence of Mario-themed rewards. TAG Heuer’s launch material describes Mario greeting the wearer in the morning, followed by animations at these milestones:
- 25%: a Super Mushroom.
- 50%: a pipe.
- 75%: a Super Star.
- 100%: a Goal Pole animation.
The mechanism is straightforward gamification: activity unlocks visual rewards. It adds personality to the watch, but the launch information does not establish that it improves fitness outcomes.
Which faces and software were included?
The Mario edition included more than one animated face. TAG Heuer described four Mario-related dial treatments: a pixel-art timekeeping face inspired by the 1985 Super Mario Bros.; two Heuer 02 variations, one colorful and one more restrained; and an Orbital face with rotating Mario-related elements. The interface was also redesigned in Super Mario colors, with reskinned faces.

- Dial Color: Black, Case Shape: Round, Dial Glass Material: Sapphire Crystal
- Band Color: Silver, Band Material: Stainless Steel
- Watch Movement Type: SwissQuartz, Watch Display Type: Analog
- Case Material: Stainless Steel, Stainless Steel Bezel
- Warranty type:Manufacturer; 2 Years International Warranty
These distinctions matter when evaluating a used watch. TAG Heuer’s launch material described the broader interface and reskins as exclusive to this edition, while saying the animated Mario face might later reach other newer Connected models. TAG Heuer subsequently announced that the animated face was available on its 2020 Connected watch. That does not mean another model reproduces the complete limited-edition interface or physical details (TAG Heuer launch material; TAG Heuer announcement reproduced by Milled).

The following performance figures are claims in TAG Heuer’s launch material, not independent test results.

Five ATM is a water-resistance rating, not a promise that a watch is suitable for every water activity. Nor should heart-rate and activity readings be treated as medical measurements. The stated battery figures are especially relevant for a buyer in 2026: they describe the watch as specified at launch, not the likely performance of a particular older unit.
Launch price, references and availability
Coverage at launch reported regional prices of US$2,150 from Revolution Watch, €2,000 from La Cote des Montres and A$3,100 from Time+Tide. These are prices from different markets, not directly comparable quotes or evidence of the watch’s value today. The launch date is long past; the available sources do not confirm current TAG Heuer stock, warranty coverage, software support or resale pricing. Treat a listing as old stock or a second-hand sale unless a seller or TAG Heuer confirms otherwise.

Published reference numbers also vary: TAG Heuer’s press material gives SBG8A13.EB0238, while Time+Tide and Revolution Watch give SBG8A13.BT6247. Verify the reference and serial against the watch, warranty card, box and seller documentation rather than relying on a listing title alone (Revolution Watch; La Cote des Montres; Time+Tide; TAG Heuer launch material).

Its strongest case is as a licensed collaboration and collectible: Mario appears in the physical design and the activity software, and the edition’s stated production run was 2,000. The two straps and themed packaging add to the appeal for a collector who values the complete set. For someone buying primarily for everyday smartwatch utility, the age of the electronics and software is more important than the original specification sheet.
- It may suit you if the Nintendo collaboration, distinctive design and limited production are the main attractions, and you are comfortable assessing an older smartwatch.
- Think carefully if you want long battery life, a smaller watch, dependable contemporary software support or maximum fitness value. A newer TAG Heuer Connected may be the more practical route, but it will not necessarily include the Mario caseback, straps, packaging or software.
- Walk away if the seller cannot demonstrate that the watch charges, boots, pairs and can be removed from their account, or cannot establish a credible basis for authenticity.
Do not assume that limited production makes this a mechanical-watch-style investment. It contains electronic components that age, and the evidence here does not establish current service options, battery replacement terms or support duration. Ask TAG Heuer directly about serviceability, software support, water-resistance testing and accessories before treating any of them as assured. The official starting point is TAG Heuer.
Used-watch inspection checklist
These are buyer-protection checks, not manufacturer-certified requirements. Ask the seller to demonstrate what can be verified before paying.
Quick Recap
- Match the identity: compare the reference and serial on the watch with the warranty card, box and seller documentation. Published reference numbers vary, so resolve any mismatch before purchase.
- Check completeness: ask whether the original box, red travel case, both straps, clasp, charger and paperwork are included. Confirm that the price reflects any missing items.
- Test basic operation: see the watch boot, charge, pair with a phone and reach its setup screen. Ask for a factory reset and account removal to be demonstrated.
- Assess the battery: note its behavior after a full charge rather than assuming a five-year-old device will match its launch claim.
- Inspect the hardware: check the screen for burn-in, dead pixels and scratches; test the pushers and crown; and examine the clasp and straps for damage.
- Confirm the Mario content: ask to see the themed interface and faces on the watch. Do not assume missing content can be recovered or that another Connected model has the full edition software.
- Be cautious about water: do not infer present-day sealing from the original 5 ATM rating. Ask about service history and water-resistance testing, and avoid water exposure if the condition is uncertain.
- Read the sale terms: confirm the return policy, authenticity protections, warranty status and what recourse is available if the watch fails after delivery.
