These five watches are Thor Svaboe’s personal Cartier picks in a Fratello article published March 16, 2022—not a current ranking or a standardized comparison. His selection ranges from the quartz Tank Must to a rose-gold flying tourbillon. The prices below are the euro amounts reported in that article at the time; they are not current quotes.
How to read this 2022 selection
Svaboe’s order reflects his own style judgments, not a scoring system or direct comparative test. For current US catalog context, Cartier lists Tank Must, Santos de Cartier, and Panthère de Cartier collections. Those live collection pages do not establish that every exact 2022 reference is still offered or available in other regions.
1. Pasha de Cartier Chronograph
Svaboe’s exuberant, dressy alternative to the Tank is a round steel chronograph with a silver flinqué dial, bracelet, and blue spinels at the pushers and crown. In the 2022 article, it measures 41 mm across and 11.97 mm thick, uses caliber 1904-CH MC, and has Cartier’s QuickSwitch strap system. Its reported price was €9,800 in March 2022.

The Pasha stands out here for combining a substantial round case and chronograph display with decorative details. It is the list’s clearest choice for someone drawn to a more assertive, formal-leaning watch rather than a slim rectangular silhouette.
2. Tank Must
The Tank Must is Svaboe’s style-first and more accessible pick. His selected large version has a 33.7 × 25.5 mm case, is 6.6 mm thick, and uses a quartz movement with a leather strap. The article gave a price of €2,700 in its March 2022 context; that is not a current price.

Its rectangular proportions and slim profile make it the list’s most restrained option. Cartier says the Tank was created by Louis Cartier, who designed it after the tanks of World War I battlefields. The current US Tank collection includes Tank Must variants with quartz, automatic, and SolarBeat photovoltaic movements, but those listings may not correspond to the exact version Svaboe selected.
3. Santos de Cartier Large
Svaboe’s sports-watch choice is a steel Santos Large with a blue dial. The 2022 article reports a 39.8 mm case, 9.08 mm thickness, 100 m water resistance, and Cartier’s QuickSwitch strap system. It also says the watch came with an additional navy calfskin strap. The listed price was €7,350 in March 2022.

The combination of a steel bracelet, included strap, and stated water resistance gives this pick a more casual-use emphasis than the Tank Must or Panthère. Cartier’s current US Santos listings also describe interchangeable bracelet or strap options, though catalog configurations can change. Cartier describes the collection as perpetuating the “pioneering spirit of aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont.”
4. Cartier Panthère Small
This is the list’s jewelry-led choice: the selected Panthère Small is rose gold with diamonds. Svaboe reports a 22 × 30 mm case, 6 mm thickness, and a March 2022 price of €25,300. Those details apply to this specific version, not to every Panthère.

Its compact rectangular case and integrated bracelet put adornment and wrist presence ahead of sport-watch utility. Cartier’s current US Panthère collection includes steel, gold, mixed-material, and diamond variants; the current range should not be confused with the exact 2022 pick.

This is the list’s complication-focused outlier, rather than a straightforward everyday alternative to the Tank or Santos. The 2022 article presents it as a pinnacle complication; a current Cartier catalog listing for this exact model is not established here.
