The Best G-Shock Watches From the 1990s: A Vintage Buying Guide

The best 1990s G-Shock depends on what you want from the watch: the DW-5900C and DW-6900 are standout design choices, while the Frogman, Mudman, Riseman and Raysman put function first. For a wearable period original, shop by model and condition—not just by its reputation or original specification. If you want the era’s look without buying vintage, Casio’s current 90s Sporty Collection offers a separate, modern option.

How to choose among 1990s G-Shock models

Casio’s history shows the decade was more than a run of distinctive cases. It brought the triple-graph display, EL backlighting, the first Frogman diver’s watch, a full-metal MR-G, sensor functions and Tough Solar charging. The right pick depends on whether you care most about design, a particular feature milestone or a specialist line.

Model Why it stands out Best fit
DW-5900C Triple-graph display associated by Casio with G-Shock’s connection to fashion and West Coast skateboarding. Design and culture
DW-6300 Frogman Casio identifies it as the first G-Shock diver’s watch, with ISO 200-meter water resistance and an asymmetrical case. Diving-history collectors
DW-6600 Casio’s first G-Shock with EL backlighting; pressing the front button displays a red G on the LCD. Illumination and interface
DW-6900 Three circular graphic displays, rounded case and front light button. Recognizable, enduring design
DW-8200 Frogman Casio describes this second-generation Frogman as made with titanium materials. Frogman-line and material interest
DW-8400 Mudman Covered, oversized buttons were designed to be usable with gloves; the structure is described as mud- and dust-resistant. Rugged-use styling and function
MRG-100 Casio’s 1996 first full-metal G-Shock. Metal construction and an unusual format
DW-9100 Riseman Twin sensors for atmospheric pressure, altitude and temperature. Sensor-focused collecting
DW-9300 Raysman Casio identifies it as the first G-Shock with Tough Solar charging. Solar-charging history

These are historical descriptions, not a universal ranking or proof that a used example still performs to its original specification. Casio’s official history is useful for understanding why a model matters; it cannot establish the condition or reliability of an individual vintage listing.

DW-5900C vs DW-6900: two defining round designs

DW-5900C: the triple-graph original

The DW-5900C is a strong choice if you want a model tied to G-Shock’s early design and cultural history. Casio says the triple-graph display helped connect the brand with fashion and that the watch became especially popular among West Coast skateboarders. Its own chronology is inconsistent: Casio’s identity history labels the model 1992 and says it first reached markets outside Japan in 1990, while the company’s separate 2023 milestone table lists DW-5900 in 1990. Those dates describe different Casio entries; the available official material does not resolve the discrepancy. Casio’s G-SHOCK identity history and its 2023 milestone announcement are the sources for those accounts.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

DW-6900: the rounded, front-button classic

Casio dates the first DW-6900 model to 1995. Its rounded case, three circular graphic displays and front light button give it a different presence from the square 5600 lineage: the face is organized around three round graphics, and the light control sits prominently on the front. Casio’s series page describes the first DW-6900-1V as shock resistant and 20-bar water resistant; that is the model’s original specification, not a guarantee for a decades-old watch. See the G-SHOCK history, 6900 series page and U.S. 90s Sporty Collection page.

Specialist 1990s G-Shock picks

Frogman: a diving-history watch, not an assumed dive watch

The DW-6300 Frogman is the historically significant pick for the line’s diving association. Casio identifies the 1993 model as its first G-Shock diver’s watch, with ISO 200-meter water resistance and an asymmetrical case intended to allow wrist movement. The later DW-8200 is Casio’s second-generation Frogman, described as made with titanium materials. Neither original specification certifies a second-hand watch as safe to take underwater; that requires an assessment of the particular watch.

Mudman: protected, oversized controls

Casio describes the DW-8400 Mudman’s button areas as fully covered in urethane and oversized for use with gloves, alongside a mud- and dust-resistant structure. Those details make it an appealing function-led design, but they are the manufacturer’s model description, not independent testing of a vintage specimen.

Riseman and Raysman: sensors or solar

The 1997 DW-9100 Riseman is the sensor choice: Casio lists functions for atmospheric pressure, altitude and temperature. The 1998 DW-9300 Raysman is the solar milestone; Casio calls it the first G-Shock with Tough Solar charging. Choose between them for the feature history that interests you, while treating operation on a used watch as something to verify rather than assume.

Other important 1990s milestones

DW-6600: EL backlight

Casio identifies the 1994 DW-6600 as its first G-Shock equipped with EL backlighting. Pressing the front button makes a red G appear on the LCD, pairing a practical display feature with a recognizable interface detail.

MRG-100: full-metal construction

Casio says the 1996 MRG-100 was the first G-Shock to bring metal construction to the brand’s shock-resistant structure. It is the outlier on this list if what interests you is the decade’s move beyond familiar resin cases.

What to check before buying a vintage G-Shock

A model’s historical reputation cannot tell you whether a specific watch is genuine, functioning or water resistant today. Use the listing and, where possible, an in-person inspection to check the watch itself.

  • Reference and authenticity: Match the model reference on the watch and listing, and look closely at whether the case, bezel and strap appear consistent with that reference. The cited Casio pages establish model histories; they do not authenticate individual listings.
  • Module and display: Check that the module operates and the display is clear, including the backlight or other feature that matters to you.
  • Buttons and case: Test the buttons where possible and inspect the case, button areas, bezel and strap for wear or damage.
  • Corrosion: Look for corrosion, especially around the battery compartment and contacts; ask for clear photographs if you cannot inspect the watch directly.
  • Water resistance: Do not infer present-day water resistance from the original rating. If you intend to expose the watch to water, have that individual watch professionally tested first.
  • Replacement parts: Match any proposed strap, bezel or other part to the exact model reference. Compatibility and current stock are not established by model history alone.

Want the 1990s look without buying vintage?

Casio’s U.S. 90s Sporty Collection is a contemporary, era-inspired route—not a collection of 1990s originals. Casio says its palette draws on the popular coloring of the DW001, which went on sale in 1994, and names the standard DW5600, front-button DW6900Y and analog-digital GA110Y as collection base models. The U.S. collection page identifies DW6900Y as a current base model; it does not establish retailer stock or pricing.

Which 1990s G-Shock should you buy?

Choose the DW-5900C for its triple-graph design and cultural story, or the DW-6900 for a rounded case and front-button layout. Pick a Frogman, Mudman, Riseman or Raysman when the specialist line or its feature history is the main attraction. For any vintage original, base the purchase on the condition and operation of the specific watch—not on what the model did when new.
