Among 2025’s notable examples are watches with independently jumping local-hour hands, traditional second-zone displays and 24-city world-time systems. There is no single best choice for every traveller.
GMT watch or world timer: what is the difference?
A GMT watch usually adds a 24-hour hand and scale so you can follow a second time zone while reading local time on the ordinary 12-hour hands. Rolex describes the GMT-Master II as displaying local time in 12-hour format and a second zone in 24-hour format, using a 24-hour hand and graduated two-colour bezel (Rolex GMT-Master II).
Implementations vary. Tudor says the Black Bay GMT can establish local time while keeping two other zones in view, using a two-colour rotating 24-hour bezel (Tudor Black Bay GMT). A world timer is designed to show many zones together. WatchPro describes the category as displaying 24 major cities; the NOMOS Club Sport neomatik Worldtimer, for example, uses city codes on a rotating disk to represent 24 zones (WatchPro’s 2025 roundup).
How to choose a travel-time display
- How many zones you need at once: A standard GMT display is convenient when one reference zone is enough. A world timer makes more zones visible together, though city names and smaller indicators can take more attention to read.
- How local time adjusts: For travel across time zones, look for an independently adjustable local-hour hand. It can move in hour increments without resetting the reference-time display. WatchPro identifies this feature on the Citizen Series 8 GMT and jumping local-hour adjustment on the Tudor Black Bay Pro.
- How you prefer to read the watch: A 24-hour hand and bezel provide a direct second-zone reference; a city ring lets you compare several named locations. Which is easier depends on the wearer and the specific dial.
- Practical fit and use: Compare case diameter, materials, water resistance and power reserve where specified. Price and availability vary by market, model reference and date, so check the relevant regional manufacturer listing for current details.
