John Harrison’s H1 was an early attempt to make a precision clock work at sea. Its linked swinging balances were intended to counter the movement of a ship, and a 1736 voyage showed promise—but H1 was one stage in Harrison’s longer effort to solve the longitude problem, not the final answer. The original clock, a 1970 museum replica, and a modern clockmaking project inspired by H1 are distinct objects.
What was John Harrison’s H1?
H1 was Harrison’s first marine timekeeper. He developed it in the early 1730s at Barrow upon Humber and brought it to London in 1735, presenting it to the scientific community. The ambition was practical as well as mechanical: a clock carried aboard ship had to keep time despite the vessel’s motion, because accurate time could help sailors determine longitude.
Royal Museums Greenwich describes H1’s central design principle this way: “Because of its two interconnected swinging balances, it is unaffected by the motion of a ship – it is essentially a portable version of Harrison’s precision wooden clocks.” The museum’s concise description captures the purpose of the linked balances: their movement was arranged to lessen the effect of a ship’s motion on the timekeeper.
How did H1 work?
Linked balances and ship motion
Instead of relying on a single balance, H1 used two interconnected swinging balances. Their linked motion was intended to counteract the disturbance caused by a vessel rolling and pitching. The concept translated principles from Harrison’s precision clocks into a machine intended for use at sea.

Mechanisms described in the modern recreation account
The Monochrome Watches article about the modern recreation discusses counter-oscillating balances, linked springs, temperature compensation, friction reduction, maintaining power, and a grasshopper escapement. Those are details of that article’s account of the design; they should not be treated as independently established specifications for every H1 or H1-inspired object. The broader point is that reproducing the appearance of H1 and reproducing the engineering choices attributed to it are not necessarily the same thing.
What happened on H1’s 1736 sea trial?
In 1736, Harrison and H1 sailed aboard Centurion toward Lisbon and returned aboard Orford. Royal Museums Greenwich reports that, on the return, H1 performed well enough for Harrison to correct a longitude misreading. That voyage was an important demonstration that his approach could be useful at sea.

It was not, by itself, proof that the longitude problem had been conclusively solved. Harrison continued working on later timekeepers, including H2, H3, and H4, amid a broader contest over how best to determine longitude at sea. H1 is best understood as a consequential early experiment in that sequence.
How the original, the museum replica, and the modern recreation differ
“H1” can refer to Harrison’s historical timekeeper, while descriptions of a replica or recreation refer to later objects. The available accounts identify a museum replica and a separate modern clockmaking project, but do not establish that the modern project is the same object as the museum’s replica.

| Royal Museums Greenwich’s “H1 Replica” | The catalogue identifies a full-scale replica made by Leonard Salzer in 1970. It is described as housed in a glazed wooden showcase with concealed electrical automatic winding. Listed materials are brass, bronze, steel, oak, and lignum vitae; overall measurements are 880 mm × 720 mm × 650 mm. | Modern clockmaking project | Pragnell describes a separate project connected to H1 and HMS Centurion. Its account says the project involved consultation with National Maritime Museum leadership and a Royal Museums Greenwich curator, as well as a visit to the Prince Philip Maritime Collections Centre. The Monochrome Watches article supplies further project and design details. | That the project is the 1970 Salzer replica, or that its exact construction, performance, and historical equivalence are independently established by the museum catalogue. |
What is the modern H1 recreation?
The modern project is presented in the cited accounts as a clockmaking undertaking informed by Harrison’s H1 and its history. Pragnell connects its design context to HMS Centurion, the ship associated with H1’s 1736 trial, and describes consultation with museum personnel and a visit to the Prince Philip Maritime Collections Centre. This establishes a historical and institutional context for the project; it does not make the clock the same object as the Salzer replica in the museum catalogue.
For technical particulars of the modern design, the Monochrome Watches article is the source for the mechanisms it describes. The available accounts do not establish an independent performance test or demonstrate that the modern object duplicates every feature or operating characteristic of Harrison’s original. It is therefore more precise to call it an H1 recreation or H1-inspired project, rather than the original H1 or the museum’s 1970 replica.

Why H1 matters to watchmaking
H1 matters because it shows Harrison adapting precision clockmaking to the unusually demanding environment of a ship. Its linked-balance concept addressed a real obstacle to using clocks for navigation: motion that could disrupt timekeeping. The 1736 trial supplied evidence that the approach had practical promise, while Harrison’s subsequent work makes clear that marine timekeeping remained an evolving challenge.
For modern readers, the distinction between historical object and later recreation is equally important. A replica can preserve scale and appearance; a new clockmaking project can reinterpret or reproduce selected design principles. Neither should be confused with Harrison’s own clock unless its provenance establishes that identity.
