How to choose the right type
Chest strap: the accuracy-first choice
Chest straps measure the heart’s electrical signal and generally give the fastest response when effort changes suddenly. They are the strongest choice for intervals, HIIT, cycling, rowing, strength circuits, threshold work and training by heart-rate zones. The trade-offs are direct skin contact, possible chafing and eventual textile-strap replacement.
Upper-arm optical sensor: comfort without a watch
An upper-arm sensor is usually easier to tolerate than a chest band and can be more dependable than wrist measurement during gripping or weightlifting. Optical readings can still be affected by movement, cold, placement, body characteristics and fit, and may trail a chest strap during sprints. Polar says the Verity Sense can approach chest-strap performance during steady exercise, while the H10 remains preferable for hard intervals; that is a manufacturer comparison, not a universal independent result (Polar’s comparison).

#1 Best Overall
- WORKS WITH EVERYTHING: Polar HRM works with ALL HRM compatible Equipment.
- SUPREME ACCURACY: Widely recognized for its top precision by many sources, Polar H10 is the most accurate heart rate sensor in Polar's history. Polar H10 provides top quality measurement.
- CONNECTIVITY: Bluetooth, ANT plus and 5 kHz provide an excellent variety of connection options. You can use Bluetooth and ANT plus connections simultaneously as well as two Bluetooth connections simultaneously.
- POLAR PRO CHEST STRAP: With improved electrodes, an easy-to-use buckle and silicone dots, the strap is comfortable and interference-free.
- VERSATILITY: Polar H10 is fully waterproof and it has internal memory for multiple hours.
Smartwatch: best when you need an all-in-one device
A watch adds GPS, a display, notifications, music and health functions, so it is not a like-for-like alternative to a $70–$170 sensor. High-end Apple Watch and some Garmin models have tracked workout heart rate closely to a Polar H10 in particular tests, but wrist optical measurement is more vulnerable to movement, cold skin, tattoos, sweat and loose contact. See the activity-specific context in TechRadar’s running-watch coverage and Tom’s Guide’s report.
Best overall: Polar H10
The H10 is the safest default because it combines electrical measurement with broad compatibility. Polar lists Bluetooth and ANT+ support for phones, watches, bike computers, gym equipment and training apps, plus internal workout memory and a replaceable battery (official H10 details). It is also commonly used as a reference device in consumer-wearable comparisons, although “gold standard” is Polar’s positioning rather than a universal clinical designation.
- Choose it for: mixed-brand equipment, running, cycling, triathlon, indoor training and dependable interval data.
- Consider another model if: you strongly dislike chest straps, need Garmin running dynamics, or want USB-style recharging.
The H10 does not provide Garmin’s proprietary running-dynamics ecosystem. Its advantage is the sensor and cross-platform flexibility, not a large set of watch features.
Rank #2

Best for Garmin: HRM 600
Garmin announced the HRM 600 in May 2025 at a $169.99 suggested retail price. It adds a rechargeable battery rated by Garmin for up to two months, standalone activity recording, HRV transmission, running dynamics, indoor-run pace and distance, and swimming-related data with compatible Garmin devices (Garmin announcement). Its two strap sizes are XS–S (60–85 cm chest) and M–XL (80–120 cm); the overlap means fit, not the label alone, should decide.
The HRM 600 is not established as more accurate than the H10. Its premium is primarily for Garmin integration, recording, charging and advanced metrics. A Forerunner, fēnix, Edge or Tacx owner who uses those features gets a clearer benefit than someone pairing a strap only with an Apple Watch, Android phone or generic gym machine.
Best Garmin value: HRM-Pro Plus
The HRM-Pro Plus launched at a $129.99 suggested retail price and supports ANT+, Bluetooth Low Energy, Garmin running dynamics, indoor treadmill and track pace/distance, stored swimming heart rate and certain standalone activity data. Garmin rates its replaceable coin-cell battery for up to one year (Garmin product announcement).
Rank #3
- Sends accurate real-time heart rate and HRV data to compatible Garmin smartwatches and cycling computers, fitness equipment, and apps
- Comfortable machine-washable strap is available in two sizes (XS–S and M–XL) for the most ideal fit for your body type
- Understand how much you slow down when your foot hits the ground with step speed loss, and improve your running form with additional running dynamics, including stride length, vertical oscillation and ground contact time balance (requires compatible smartwatch)
- During activities where you can’t wear a watch, such as team sports, HRM 600 will record the workout and sync data, including heart rate, calories, speed, distance and more, directly to the Garmin Connect smartphone app
- Tracks daily metrics, including estimated steps, heart rate, calories burned and more, and syncs that data directly to the Garmin Connect smartphone app
Buy it when you want Garmin-specific metrics and find it materially cheaper than the HRM 600. Choose the newer HRM 600 if rechargeable power and its expanded standalone feature set matter more than purchase price.
Best chest-strap alternative: Polar Verity Sense
The Verity Sense sits on the upper arm or forearm, records workouts internally, transmits over Bluetooth and ANT+, and can attach to swimming goggles (Polar comparison). It suits runners, cyclists, gym users and swimmers who will not wear a chest band. Place it snugly and consistently; optical sensors need stable skin contact.

Best budget chest strap: Polar H9
The H9 provides electrical measurement with Bluetooth and ANT+ at a lower price. Polar’s US pages showed $69.90 during the same August 16, 2026 check. It is a sensible first strap for one-device live heart rate during running, cycling or gym sessions.
You give up H10-specific capabilities such as onboard recording and some multi-device flexibility. If the H10 is discounted close to H9 pricing, the H10 is usually the better long-term purchase (Polar’s comparison).
Compatibility and recording checklist
- Garmin watch or Edge: all listed chest straps can transmit heart rate where the device supports the relevant protocol, but running dynamics, indoor pace, distance and swimming workflows require compatible Garmin hardware. Garmin’s HRM 600 compatibility information is model-specific.
- Apple Watch or Android phone: H10, H9 and Verity Sense are attractive cross-platform options when the watch or app accepts external Bluetooth heart-rate sensors. Verify the exact model and app.
- Bike computers and gym equipment: check whether the machine accepts Bluetooth, ANT+, or both; “Bluetooth compatible” does not guarantee multiple simultaneous connections.
- Swimming: underwater live transmission is unreliable because radio signals do not travel like they do in air. Prioritize onboard recording or brand-specific store-and-forward support. Polar positions Verity Sense for goggle use; Garmin documents stored swimming heart rate for compatible devices with the HRM-Pro Plus and HRM 600.
- Offline workouts: H10, Verity Sense, HRM-Pro Plus and HRM 600 have independent or stored-data functions, but the recorded metrics and later synchronization path differ. Confirm the receiving ecosystem before assuming a workout will sync.
How to get reliable readings
- Put a chest strap directly on skin, just below the sternum.
- Moisten both electrode areas before starting.
- Tighten it enough to stay in place without restricting breathing.
- Pair it in the target watch, phone, bike computer, gym machine or app, and wait until the external sensor is shown as connected.
- Start the workout only after the connection is confirmed.
- Rinse and dry the textile strap after use; replace the strap or battery when readings become erratic.
These placement and moisture steps come directly from Garmin’s HRM-Pro Plus setup guidance (Garmin quick-start guide) and apply broadly to electrical chest straps.
Best Value
- Precise Heart Rate Tracking: H2Pro uses an ECG algorithm combined with its proprietary technology to reduce interference from movement, breathing, muscle tension/discomfort, and sweat. It delivers stable, accurate heart rate data in real time, ensuring you stay connected to your heart's rhythm with every beat.
- Comfortable Wear: Weighing just 𝟐𝟏𝐠 (𝟑𝟒𝐠 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐩), the heart rate monitor features soft, breathable materials and an adjustable strap. This ensures a secure, comfortable fit for all body types.
- Seamless Connection: H2Pro seamlessly syncs with your favorite fitness apps and devices via Bluetooth or ANT+. Enjoy real-time monitoring and smooth data transfer on smartphones, smartwatches, or cycling computers – all with zero hassle.
- 500h Battery Life: Powered by a built-in CR2032 coin-cell battery, H2Pro delivers up to 𝟓𝟎𝟎 𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐬 of operation. For most fitness enthusiasts exercising 3 times weekly (≈1 hour per session), this covers nearly 3 years of workout demands.
- Heart Rate Variability: Utilizing ECG monitoring algorithms to accurately identify R-wave peaks and capture instantaneous heartbeat changes, it is particularly suitable for users requiring high precision and scientific training. This enables training load adjustment based on HRV to prevent overtraining.
If readings are zero or implausible
- Check battery charge or coin-cell condition.
- Re-wet electrodes and retighten the strap.
- Confirm the correct Bluetooth or ANT+ pairing and disconnect a nearby device that has claimed the sensor.
- Check that the app supports the sensor’s transmission mode.
- Inspect for a dirty, stretched or damaged textile strap.
- Never wear a chest sensor over clothing. For optical sensors, warm up in cold conditions and check snug upper-arm placement.
If an optical reading lags
Compare it with a chest strap during intervals, move the sensor from the wrist to the upper arm, tighten it comfortably and warm the skin before judging performance. Average workout heart rate can hide short-term response delays.
Special cases
Sports bras and fit
Garmin’s HRM-Fit clips to compatible medium- and high-support sports bras and is listed at $149.99 on Garmin’s monitor category page (Garmin monitor range). It is a targeted solution, not a universal replacement for a standard strap.
Weightlifting and circuits
Wrist sensors can lose contact when the wrist is flexed or gripping a bar. A properly fitted chest strap remains the accuracy-first choice; an upper-arm sensor may be the more practical compromise.
Medical devices and conditions
Consumer monitors are not diagnostic instruments. If you have a pacemaker, another implanted device or a known heart condition, follow the device manufacturer’s guidance and ask a qualified clinician before using consumer readings to make exercise decisions.
