Yes—Apple Watch can control a Keynote slideshow, but it usually works through its paired iPhone rather than as a standalone remote. For a Mac, iPad, or another iPhone displaying the presentation, first set up the iPhone as a Keynote Remote. The other supported arrangement is to play Keynote from the iPhone itself while it is connected to an external display.
Which Apple Watch and Keynote setup do you need?
The iPhone has two possible roles: it can run the slideshow and send it to a display, or it can act as the remote for a separate presentation device. Choose the row that matches your setup before pairing anything.
| Presentation runs on | iPhone’s role | How the Watch controls it | Key limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mac | Remote | Pair the iPhone with the Mac using Keynote Remote; the Watch controls through the iPhone. | The iPhone must be configured as the remote first. |
| iPhone connected to an external display | Runs the presentation | Open the presentation on the iPhone and connect it to a display using an adapter or AirPlay. | The iPhone must not also be paired in Keynote with another presentation device. |
| iPad or another iPhone | Remote | Pair the presentation device with the iPhone through Keynote Remote; control it from the Watch. | The iPhone-to-presentation-device remote connection is part of the control chain. |
Apple’s instructions require Keynote on the Watch and its companion iPhone. Apple’s dedicated Watch support page specifies Keynote for iOS 2.5.3 or later for its documented workflow; individual features can have newer hardware and software requirements. See Apple’s Apple Watch and Keynote instructions and the Keynote for Mac guide.
What to install and check first
- An Apple Watch paired with an iPhone.
- Keynote installed on both the iPhone and Apple Watch.
- Keynote installed on the Mac, iPad, or iPhone that will display the presentation, if it is a separate device.
- Wi-Fi enabled on the relevant devices.
- For older iOS or iPadOS configurations, Keynote permission to find and connect to devices on the local network.
Install Keynote on Apple Watch
- Update Keynote on the companion iPhone.
- On the iPhone, open the Watch app and tap My Watch.
- Tap Keynote, then turn on Show App on Apple Watch or confirm that the app is installed.
Set up the iPhone as a remote for a Mac
This is the route for controlling a Mac presentation. The iPhone acts as the bridge between the Watch and the Mac.

- Open the presentation in Keynote on the iPhone.
- Connect the iPhone to the external display with an adapter or AirPlay.
- Make sure the iPhone is not paired in Keynote with another presentation device, such as a Mac or iPad.
- Open Keynote on the Watch. Tap Play if the slideshow has not started, then use the Watch controls to advance or stop it.
Apple documents this direct-iPhone arrangement separately from Keynote Remote: Apple Watch and Keynote compatibility.
Pair an iPad or another iPhone as the presentation device
For an iPad or second iPhone, the companion iPhone must serve as the Keynote Remote. In Keynote on that iPhone, use the Remote option in the document manager and follow the on-screen pairing instructions for the presentation device. Once paired, keep the iPhone in the remote workflow and use Keynote on the Watch to control the slideshow. Apple’s instructions cover remote pairing for Apple devices in its Keynote for iPhone guide.

What the Apple Watch controls do
- Play: Starts the slideshow when the presentation is ready.
- Next: Advances to the next slide or the next build on the current slide.
- Previous: Goes back to the previous slide or resets builds on the current slide. If a slide has animations or staged reveals, a tap may rewind those before moving to an earlier slide.
- Exit: Ends the slideshow.
During playback the Watch may show simplified controls, normally emphasizing the forward control. Swipe right to reveal Previous and Exit; swipe left to return to the simpler view. After the Watch sleeps, or if the presentation is stopped and restarted, you may need to swipe right again. Apple describes this interface in its Keynote for Mac guide.
Use Double Tap to start or advance
Double Tap is optional, not a requirement for ordinary Watch control. Apple lists support for Apple Watch Series 9 or later, or Apple Watch Ultra models with watchOS 11 or later, paired with an iPhone running iOS 16 or later, an iPad running iPadOS 16 or later, or a Mac running macOS Sequoia or later with the latest Keynote. Configure Double Tap on the Watch, prepare the presentation, then double-tap your index finger and thumb together to start the slideshow or advance to the next slide or build. Check Apple’s compatibility details for the applicable device combination.

What Apple Watch cannot do
The Watch provides basic playback controls, not the full Keynote Remote interface. It does not show presenter notes, current-and-next-slide layouts, arbitrary slide selection, or the iPhone/iPad remote’s drawing and laser-pointer tools. If you need those, use Keynote Remote on an iPhone or iPad; Apple documents its layouts and tools in the Keynote for iPhone guide. Apple also says its former standalone Keynote Remote app is no longer supported; the current remote function is built into Keynote for iPhone and iPad.

- Check the iPhone’s role. When controlling a separate Mac, iPad, or iPhone, make sure the companion iPhone is in Keynote’s Remote workflow. For a presentation running directly from the iPhone, connect that iPhone to the display and ensure it is not paired as a remote for another device.
- Check the Mac setting. On the Mac, open Keynote > Settings > Remote and confirm Enable is selected.
- Check Wi-Fi and distance. Make sure Wi-Fi is enabled and bring devices closer. Keynote Remote can use Apple’s Multipeer Connectivity between nearby devices, but Apple recommends the same Wi-Fi network when older devices or Macs have connection trouble.
- Check local-network access on older systems. On iOS 14 or iPadOS 14, the documented path is Settings > Privacy > Local Network > Keynote: On. Settings labels and organization can differ on newer releases.
- Relink the remote. If the connection remains unresponsive, unlink the remote and pair it again using a new four-digit code.
- Restart the apps or devices. Close and reopen Keynote; if needed, restart the devices and try the pairing again.
- Use the iPhone or iPad directly as the remote if Watch control remains unreliable.
Apple’s local-network and connection guidance is in its Keynote Remote guide. A venue network may restrict device discovery, so rehearse on the actual network when possible.
Choose the right control method for the presentation
- Use Apple Watch if you already have the required Apple devices and only need start, next, previous, and exit controls.
- Use iPhone or iPad Keynote Remote if you need notes, a current/next-slide view, slide navigation, highlighting, or a laser pointer.
- Consider a dedicated presentation remote if you are presenting from a non-Apple computer, venue network restrictions prevent discovery, or you need a separate control path for a critical presentation. Compatibility depends on the remote and presentation system.
The Watch route involves several links—the Watch, paired iPhone, Keynote on both, presentation device, and a working remote connection. It is discreet, but it is not an independent universal clicker.
Quick Recap
Rehearse the complete control chain
- Open the correct presentation on the device that will display it.
- Confirm the iPhone is in the correct role: remote, or the device sending its own slideshow to a display.
- Test Play, Next, Previous, and Exit; check how Previous behaves on slides with builds.
- Confirm the Watch remains responsive after its display sleeps.
- Keep the iPhone nearby and have a backup way to advance the presentation.
