Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteBen Clymer’s 2025 shortlist is deliberately personal, not a market-wide ranking: the beige Rolex Oyster Perpetual 36mm, Patek Philippe 6196P, and A. Lange & Söhne Odysseus Honeygold. He says the Rolex could become his daily watch, describes the Patek as the strongest slim-watch release he has seen from the brand in years, and already owns and regularly wears the Lange.
Ben Clymer’s three 2025 choices
In Hodinkee’s December 19, 2025 editors’ roundup, Clymer explains his approach plainly: “So, instead, here I am with a few I’d actually buy, and one I’ve already bought.” That makes the list a taste-led buying guide rather than an audited ranking of every watch released during 2025.
| Watch | What Clymer says | Evidence-based buying context |
|---|---|---|
| Rolex Oyster Perpetual 36mm in Beige | He considers 36mm the best Rolex size and saw it as a possible new daily watch. | Regular-production status, availability, movement details and a current price are not stated in the roundup. |
| Patek Philippe 6196P | He calls it “the best thing they’ve done in a long time for the slim watch category.” | Clymer’s approximate 2025 reference was $57,000 plus sales tax; that is not a current verified price. |
| A. Lange & Söhne Odysseus Honeygold | He already owns it, wears it frequently, and chose the honeygold case with a brown dial because it felt suited to him. | Current price, production status and technical specifications are not stated in the roundup. |
Rolex Oyster Perpetual 36mm in Beige: the everyday candidate
The Rolex is the clearest daily-wear recommendation because Clymer identifies both the size and his intended use. His view that 36mm is Rolex’s best size is a personal ergonomic preference, not a universal rule: wrist shape, lug reach and dial legibility will determine whether that diameter works for you.
The beige dial also keeps the watch understated enough for broad wardrobe use, but the roundup does not establish its exact movement, thickness, bracelet adjustment range, water resistance, retail price or availability. Those details should be confirmed for the specific market and reference you are considering.

Who it suits
- Someone wanting one restrained mechanical Rolex for ordinary daily wear.
- A buyer who prefers a traditional 36mm proportion over larger sports-watch dimensions.
- Anyone comfortable treating “best size” as Clymer’s opinion rather than a fit guarantee.
Patek Philippe 6196P: the slim-watch choice
Clymer’s strongest language is reserved for the Patek 6196P. Calling it “the best thing they’ve done in a long time for the slim watch category” identifies the appeal: a thin, dress-leaning Patek that he considers unusually compelling within the brand’s recent work.
Hodinkee’s roundup reports Clymer’s approximate 2025 price reference of $57,000 plus sales tax. It is his estimate from that article, not a live quotation, current list price or confirmed transaction value. Taxes, region, allocation and secondary-market conditions can change the amount substantially.
Who it suits
- Someone prioritizing a slim profile and formal versatility over a tool-watch feature set.
- A collector prepared to verify the exact specification, dealer availability and current price before committing.
- Buyers who value Clymer’s enthusiasm for the model but want to make their own judgment about wearability and service considerations.
A. Lange & Söhne Odysseus Honeygold: the proven personal favorite
The Lange is different from the other two because Clymer has already bought it. He says he wears it frequently and selected the honeygold case with a brown dial because the combination felt right for him. That ownership detail is more useful than a generic “best” label: it shows which watch survived his own daily rotation.

How the three compare
The useful comparison is not a single score. It is the decision each watch represents.

Which 2025 watch should you buy?
Choose the Rolex if daily simplicity comes first
Start with the Oyster Perpetual 36 if you agree with Clymer’s proportions and want the most straightforward everyday brief among these three. Try the actual watch on your wrist; the 36mm diameter alone cannot predict comfort because lug-to-lug reach, thickness and bracelet adjustment are not given in the roundup.

Choose the Patek if thinness and formal presence come first
The 6196P is the logical choice when the slim-watch category is your priority and the price is acceptable after confirming a current quote. Clymer’s $57,000 figure should be used only as historical context from 2025, not as a buying budget.
Choose the Lange if personal character and precious metal come first
The Odysseus Honeygold fits a buyer who responds to the specific honeygold-and-brown combination and values the fact that Clymer actually wears his. It is the most explicitly personal choice on the list.
What else defined the 2025 watch landscape?
Clymer’s three watches were not the only notable releases. Rolex’s April 1, 2025 newsroom release documented the Land-Dweller, a white-gold GMT-Master II with the brand’s first ceramic dial, new pastel Oyster Perpetual dials, a yellow-gold bracelet version of the Perpetual 1908, a red-ombré Datejust 31, and additional Daytona, GMT-Master II and Sky-Dweller dial configurations.

Tudor supplied several practical comparison points. The Black Bay 58 received a burgundy dial and bezel treatment with a five-link bracelet. The Black Bay Chrono added a five-link bracelet and T-clasp. The Black Bay 68 uses a METAS-certified MT5601-U movement with a 70-hour power reserve, a concrete specification for buyers who value certification and autonomy.
T3’s year-end expert roundup illustrates how wide the field was: its initial list exceeded 60 watches and followed a one-watch-per-brand rule. Named examples included the Grand Seiko SLGB003, Casio G-Shock x Crocs Echo Wave, TAG Heuer Formula 1 Solargraph, Tudor 1926 Luna, Ciga Design Moon Walker, Nomos Club Sport Neomatik Worldtimer, Seiko 5 Sports The Pink Panther and Omega Speedmaster Moonphase Meteorite, alongside high complications and independent releases.
For a water-focused alternative, the same 2025 coverage gives the CWC CWN1 a stated 300-meter water-resistance specification. That figure belongs to the CWC model, not to any of Clymer’s three selections.

Affordable, travel and diving questions
Are there affordable new watches from 2025?
The named 2025 roundups include more accessible-looking candidates such as the Casio G-Shock x Crocs Echo Wave, TAG Heuer Formula 1 Solargraph, Tudor 1926 Luna and Seiko 5 Sports The Pink Panther, but the supplied coverage does not provide verified prices or a common definition of “affordable.” Check the live regional price and seller before treating any of them as a budget recommendation.
Which pick is best for travel?
None of Clymer’s three is documented with a GMT, world-time or other travel complication in the roundup. The Nomos Club Sport Neomatik Worldtimer is one travel-oriented model named by T3, but its inclusion in that list is not a specification comparison with the Rolex, Patek or Lange.
Which pick is best for diving?
The roundup does not establish a dive rating for any of Clymer’s selections. If a documented water-resistance figure is your deciding requirement, the CWC CWN1’s stated 300 meters provides a clearer starting point than these three personal picks.
What “best” does—and does not—mean here
There is no audited market-wide statistic in the cited 2025 coverage proving a single best-selling or best-investment watch. Clymer’s list should therefore be read as a concise expression of his taste: a possible daily Rolex, a slim Patek he considers exceptional, and a Lange he already chose for himself.
