The History of the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar

From the 1984 25554 to the leap-year-indicating 25820 and the 2018 RD#2, the Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar’s history turns on fitting a complex calendar into a slim watch.

The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar began in 1984 with a technical compromise: fit a 3.95 mm selfwinding perpetual-calendar movement into the Royal Oak’s slim case, while leaving out a leap-year display to preserve thinness. The line later added that indication, returned in a larger case, and culminated in a 2018 thinness-focused prototype. Its history is a story of how the calendar mechanism and the Royal Oak’s proportions evolved together.

What is the history of the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar?

The Royal Oak debuted in 1972, but the perpetual calendar joined the collection later. Audemars Piguet had introduced Calibre 2120/2800 in Model 5548 in 1978; the brand’s calibre history describes it as the thinnest selfwinding perpetual calendar of its time, at 3.95 mm thick. In 1984, the movement was adapted for the Royal Oak.

Audemars Piguet’s Sébastian Vivas, Heritage and Museum Director, has said: “Perpetual calendars have marked the history of Audemars Piguet since 1875.” The brand’s account of the complication explains that a mechanical cam reproduces a four-year cycle to account for month lengths and leap-year February. It says manual correction is needed once every hundred years; that is the brand’s general explanation, not a guarantee for every watch or calendar convention. When did the Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar come out?

1984: Model 5554 becomes reference 25554

Audemars Piguet presented Model 5554 on April 5, 1984, the opening day of the Basel Fair. The model was soon renamed reference 25554. The press kit depicted a steel version, but the brand’s production-register account records the sole example delivered in 1984 as yellow gold, in December. That distinction separates the launch imagery from the documented first delivery. Audemars Piguet AP Chronicles: reference 25554

Fitting the movement into the Royal Oak

The 25554 joined the Royal Oak case to Calibre 2120/2800, retaining a slim profile despite the added calendar mechanism. The base Royal Oak 5402 measured 7.1 mm thick; accommodating the calendar called for a slightly raised bezel, a trimmed sapphire crystal, and space for three calendar correctors. The resulting 25554 case measured 7.5 mm thick. It displayed the day, date, month, and moon phase. Audemars Piguet records 270 units produced between 1984 and 1992. 1987: the 25654 revises the case

Launched in 1987, reference 25654 retained the original visual language while revising the case for improved water resistance. Its recorded case thickness was 8.3 mm, greater than the 25554’s 7.5 mm. Audemars Piguet AP Chronicles: historical overview

Why did the 25820 add a leap-year display?

Calibre 2120/2800 did not indicate the leap-year position. Audemars Piguet’s historical overview says the designers prioritized thinness; without the indication, setting the calendar was less convenient. In 1996, the brand revised the movement as Calibre 2120/2802 for reference 25820. A small hand at 12 o’clock tracks the four-year leap-year cycle, making that cycle visible on the dial.
