Its story is tied to the 1977 Vacheron Constantin 222, an earlier sport-elegant watch that helped define the era, but the Overseas developed its own design language and identity. Across its 1996 debut and major redesigns in 2004 and 2016, the collection made the Maltese cross a visual signature and expanded its travel-minded complications.
Why the Overseas is called the “other” 1970s icon
The phrase points to the 222, not to the launch date of the Overseas. Vacheron Constantin released the 222 in 1977 for the Maison’s 222nd anniversary and credits its design to Jorg Hysek. The Overseas arrived nearly two decades later, in 1996. The Fondation Haute Horlogerie describes the 222 as a clear inspiration for the Overseas, while Vacheron Constantin heritage director Christian Selmoni draws a distinction: “We don’t really consider the Overseas an evolution of the 222.”
That distinction matters. The two watches belong to the same broad story of sporty elegance at Vacheron Constantin, but the Overseas is not simply a renamed or copied 222. It took up some of the era’s integrated sport-watch codes and built a separate collection around a different bezel treatment, the Maltese cross, and a growing emphasis on travel functions.

How the Overseas developed, from 1996 to 2026
1996: a new collection and a travel theme
The Fondation Haute Horlogerie dates the Overseas launch to 1996. On the first model, the Maltese-cross idea appeared in the bezel: WatchTime describes an eight-sided outline based on the emblem’s geometry. WatchTime also reports that the first caseback depicted the sailing ship Amerigo Vespucci, an image consistent with the collection’s travel theme.

1999 and 2006: complications for different kinds of travel
WatchTime reports that Vacheron Constantin added an Overseas chronograph in 1999. In 2006, it identifies the first Overseas Dual Time, a function suited to keeping track of a second time zone. These were milestones within the collection rather than new collection launches.
2004: the Maltese cross moves into the bracelet
The second-generation Overseas brought a more substantial redesign. The Fondation Haute Horlogerie dates the appearance of the Maltese-cross motif in the bracelet to 2004. WatchTime describes a 42 mm case, a three-hand model and a chronograph with a large date, alongside bracelet links shaped as half crosses. Together, these changes made the emblem a more integrated part of the watch’s design.

2016: the modern generation adds tool-free strap changes
The Fondation Haute Horlogerie dates the third-generation redesign to 2016. A defining practical change was the tool-free interchangeable strap system. The current collection overview describes a supplied metal bracelet, alligator-leather strap and rubber strap that can be exchanged without tools—a convenience that lets the wearer change the watch’s look without a separate strap-changing tool.
2022 and 2025: the 222 returns in new editions
Vacheron Constantin reissued the 222 in March 2022 as a 37 mm watch in 18K 3N yellow gold, and its official page also documents a 2025 stainless-steel edition. 2026: a 30th-anniversary perpetual calendar
In a September 24, 2026 report, Wallpaper* described a limited-edition Overseas Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin marking the collection’s 30th anniversary. The reported edition comprises 200 pieces, with an 18K white-gold case and bracelet, an azure-blue dial, and white and blue rubber strap alternatives. Wallpaper* gives the case thickness as 8.11 mm and identifies the self-winding movement as Calibre 1120 QP/1. The collection’s identity rests on more than its 1970s connection. The Maltese-cross motif links the bezel and, since the 2004 redesign, the bracelet; interchangeable straps give the modern generation a practical way to shift between bracelet, leather and rubber. Its models also span a wide range of complications.

The Fondation Haute Horlogerie’s collection overview lists steel, gold and titanium versions, with functions ranging from hours, minutes and seconds to chronograph, dual time, tourbillon and perpetual calendar; it also mentions skeleton and extra-thin versions. It gives a collection-level water-resistance figure of 150 metres, with ultra-thin models as the exception, and describes a soft-iron inner ring for magnetic protection.
