For Brice Goulard, the 39.5mm Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean 600M was the better fit: it felt more comfortable on his wrist and looked more discreet than the larger versions he compared. That is a personal case study, not a universal sizing rule. His article appeared in 2016 and concerns an earlier Planet Ocean generation, not Omega’s 2025 redesign.
What did the 2016 case study compare?
In his 28 July 2016 article for Monochrome Watches, Brice Goulard considered 39.5mm, 43.5mm and 45.5mm versions of the Planet Ocean. He reports a 14.16mm height for the 39.5mm watch. His central question—“Do I think that smaller is better?”—gets a qualified yes: that smaller version suited his wrist and his preferences better.
The distinction matters. Goulard’s conclusion is about his experience wearing and comparing these watches; it does not establish that a smaller diameter is more comfortable for every wearer. Nor does diameter alone tell you how a watch will sit: case shape, thickness, bracelet or strap articulation, and the wearer’s wrist all affect the feel.
Why did the 39.5mm feel better to him?
Comfort and how the bracelet wrapped
Goulard says the smaller watch sat more comfortably and felt better balanced on his wrist. He describes how the caseback and the beginning of the bracelet or strap lay against the flatter part of his wrist before wrapping around it. In his words: “With a smaller watch, the caseback sits on the flat part of the wrist and the bracelet or the strap sits flat too, at its beginning, to then wrap around the wrist.” This is his explanation of his own fit preference, not a measured result.

A more discreet presence
The 39.5mm version also gave him the less prominent look he preferred. That may matter if you want a substantial dive watch to sit more quietly in everyday or professional settings, but appearance is subjective; a larger watch may be exactly the presence another wearer wants.
Fit is more than the diameter
The article does not establish lug-to-lug measurements for the specific 2016 watch, so its diameter figures cannot answer whether the lugs will overhang your wrist. Case diameter is a useful starting point, not a fit verdict. Try the exact watch on your wrist, ideally on the bracelet or strap you plan to wear, and assess how the case sits and how the band falls around your wrist. Goulard’s own advice is: “And to obtain that, you need to try watches and to see what is the size that suits you better.”

What the 39.5mm label does—and does not—tell you about specifications
Planet Ocean specifications vary by reference and generation. Two later 39.5mm examples illustrate why measurements and features should not be transferred from one version to another:

These are not interchangeable specification sets. The Hodinkee Summer Blue review describes the 2023 watch with calibre 8900 and 55 hours of reserve; Bucherer’s listing describes a model with calibre 8800. Check the exact reference and generation when comparing movement, thickness, water resistance or price.

How the 2016 article fits the current Planet Ocean collection
On 18 November 2025, OMEGA announced a fourth-generation Planet Ocean collection, describing it as a complete redesign and introducing seven watches. The official announcement provides current collection context, but it does not establish whether any 2016 reference remains available new. The 39.5mm case is worth trying if you prefer a less conspicuous look or find that a smaller case sits more naturally on your wrist. The larger 43.5mm and 45.5mm options belong in the comparison if you want a bigger visual presence or if their fit works better for you. The case study does not provide enough evidence to declare one size objectively superior.

When trying one, compare comfort on the bracelet or strap you would actually use, how the case sits on your wrist, and whether the overall presence feels right. If you are considering a later 39.5mm Planet Ocean, verify the exact generation and reference rather than assuming it shares the dimensions or movement of the 2016 watch.
