Google brought Wear OS 4 to the first-generation Pixel Watch in its October 2023 software update. The most useful change was backup and restore, alongside accessibility and setup improvements—not a hardware makeover. As of August 2026, Wear OS 4 is a historical release: Google has begun rolling out Wear OS 7 to eligible Pixel Watch devices.
Which Pixel Watch got Wear OS 4?
The first-generation Pixel Watch launched with Wear OS 3.5 and received Wear OS 4 later, through the October 2023 update. The Pixel Watch 2, released that month, shipped with Wear OS 4; that launch and the original watch’s later update were separate events. Google’s October 2023 update notice announced the upgrade for Pixel Watch users. Availability could vary by region, model, carrier, and rollout timing, so the watches did not necessarily receive it simultaneously.
Wear OS 4 is no longer the current Pixel Watch software. Google’s June 2026 update began rolling out Wear OS 7 to eligible devices, as described in its Pixel Watch update notice.
What Wear OS 4 changed
Backup and restore made watch transfers easier
Wear OS 4 added support for backing up watch data and settings, making it easier to set up another watch without recreating everything by hand. Depending on app support and the data involved, a backup can include apps and app data, settings, watch faces, tiles, and other saved configuration. It is not a guarantee that every app, login, payment credential, or health-data state will transfer perfectly; some apps may require sign-in or fresh setup.

Google says a backup can take up to a few days to complete and recommends keeping the watch on its charger and connected to Wi-Fi. Its backup and transfer instructions describe the current process.
Accessibility and setup got practical improvements
Google highlighted faster, more reliable text-to-speech as an accessibility improvement. It also said permissions granted on a phone could carry over more smoothly during watch setup, reducing repeated prompts in some cases. Neither change means every accessibility feature was overhauled or that every app permission synchronizes automatically; app-specific and privacy-related prompts may still appear.
Google outlined these platform changes in its Wear OS update announcement.

Watch Face Format and a newer app foundation
Wear OS 4 brought support for the Watch Face Format, a standard intended to help developers build high-quality, power-efficient watch faces. This was primarily an ecosystem and developer improvement, not a promise that every existing face would change or that the original Pixel Watch received a radically different set of first-party faces on launch. Google’s Wear OS 4 platform overview explains the broader platform changes.
The October release also included Pixel Watch fixes
Google’s October 2023 Pixel Watch notice listed personal-safety experiences, bug fixes, performance updates, and battery improvements alongside the Wear OS 4 upgrade. Those items were part of the broader device release; they should not all be treated as capabilities created solely by the Wear OS 4 platform. Google’s announcement does not establish a universal real-world battery-life gain for every owner.
What the update did not change
Wear OS 4 did not turn the original Pixel Watch into a Pixel Watch 2. The update could not add new physical sensors, a different processor, a larger display, or new battery hardware. Google’s Pixel Watch 2 announcement describes that generation’s hardware and health improvements, which are distinct from a software upgrade to the first watch.

- The Google Pixel Watch 4 is a stunning display of precision craftsmanship, with Gemini, your built-in AI assistant, Google’s longest-lasting battery, and comprehensive tools for next-level health and fitness performance[1,2,3,4]
- See it all and do the most with the Actua 360 domed display; it’s 10% larger and 50% brighter than Pixel Watch 3, and as durable as ever with scratch-resistant Gorilla Glass[1]
- The Google Pixel Watch 4 has Gemini built in[4]; just ask questions and your ultra capable AI assistant will deliver quick responses for personalized help; and stay connected when you’re texting with AI-powered quick replies that are hyper-relevant[5,6]
- Get up to 30 hours of battery life or up to 48 hours in Battery Saver mode[3]; plus, the new side charging dock gives you 15 hours of battery in 15 minutes or less[7]
- Train smarter with 40+ exercise modes and real-time stats on your wrist[8]; and with high-precision dual-frequency GPS, you get more accurate route tracking on runs and hikes[1]
Think of Wear OS 4 as a quality-of-life and platform update: useful if you wanted smoother transfers, improved text-to-speech, and compatibility with a newer Wear OS ecosystem, but not a hardware-level reinvention.
How to check for and install an update
These steps are for checking the watch’s available system update; they do not guarantee that a specific historical release is still offered to every device. Before starting, Google recommends connecting the watch to Wi-Fi, placing it on its charger, and charging it to at least 50%. The watch cannot be used while installation is in progress. Google says updates typically finish in under an hour, though some can take longer.

If the update does not appear or gets stuck
No update is listed
A missing update does not by itself mean the watch is unsupported. Rollouts can be staged, and timing may differ across regions, configurations, or carriers. Try these checks in order:
- Charge the watch above 50% and leave it on the charger.
- Connect it to Wi-Fi.
- Update the Google Pixel Watch app on the paired phone and install available Android updates on the phone.
- Restart the watch, then check Settings → System → System updates again.
An LTE model is not necessarily ineligible just because an update has not appeared yet; carrier or regional rollout timing may differ.
Installation appears stalled
Preparing, restarting, and installing can take time, and the watch is unavailable during installation. Do not interrupt it at the first pause. If the update has failed or the watch is stuck, Google’s documented recovery sequence is:

- Return to Settings → System → System updates and check again.
For app-related problems after an upgrade, update watch apps from Crown → Play Store → Manage apps → Update All. Google includes this path in its update troubleshooting guidance.
Keep a factory reset as a last resort
A reset erases apps, settings, and locally stored watch data, so it is not the first fix for a delayed update. If a reset becomes necessary, back up the watch first when possible; Google says a backup can take up to a few days. After resetting, you may need the previous PIN or Google Account credentials to pair the watch again. See Google’s reset and recovery instructions.
Moving to another watch or phone
For a supported transfer, the current Google path is Settings → System → Transfer watch on the watch. On the old phone, open the Google Pixel Watch app and go to System → Transfer watch → Start Transfer → Done. When setting up a new watch, add it in the Pixel Watch app and select the available backup during setup. Google’s transfer guide has the detailed steps.
A transfer can save time, but allow for manual setup or sign-in where an app or credential does not restore. A new phone’s app and software should also be up to date to avoid pairing or synchronization issues.

For an existing first-generation Pixel Watch owner, yes—especially if moving to another watch was on the horizon or accessibility and app support mattered. Backup and restore was the headline practical benefit; the rest made the watch’s software more capable and current for its time. The update did not reverse battery aging or supply the newer hardware of later models.
In 2026, do not choose an aging first-generation watch solely because it received Wear OS 4. If yours still meets your needs, install any update offered to it; if you are shopping, compare current watches and their support runway rather than treating Wear OS 4 as current. The historical update was useful, but it was never a substitute for a new generation of hardware.
