Android Fans Reacted to a Rumored $700 Galaxy Watch 7 Ultra. Here’s What Samsung Actually Launched

The Galaxy Watch 7 Ultra was a pre-launch rumor, not Samsung’s final product name. The Galaxy Watch Ultra launched at $649.99 U.S. MSRP for LTE, while early enthusiast comments questioned its price, design, performance and Android compatibility.

The rumored Galaxy Watch 7 Ultra did not launch under that name, and Samsung did not set its U.S. price at $700. The product arrived as the Galaxy Watch Ultra, with a $649.99 U.S. MSRP for the LTE model. Before launch, some Android enthusiasts objected to the rumored price, but their comments were an online reaction sample—not a survey of Android owners.

What was rumored—and what actually launched?

In a June 18, 2024 reaction article, Droid Life discussed reports that Samsung’s forthcoming premium watch might be called the Galaxy Watch 7 Ultra and cost around $700. That was a reported expectation, not a confirmed Samsung price or product name. Droid Life’s coverage captured the early response to that possibility.

Samsung ultimately released the watch as the Galaxy Watch Ultra, without “7” in its name. The LTE model’s official U.S. MSRP was $649.99, according to Samsung’s July 2024 U.S. wearables MSRP sheet. Samsung announced global availability beginning July 24, 2024, in its Global Newsroom announcement.

Question What the record shows
Pre-launch name Galaxy Watch 7 Ultra was the name used in the rumor coverage, not the final retail name.
Final product name Galaxy Watch Ultra.
Reported price Around $700; a rumor, not Samsung’s official launch price.
U.S. launch MSRP $649.99 for the LTE model, per Samsung’s July 2024 MSRP sheet.
Global availability began July 24, 2024, according to Samsung.

Samsung describes the Ultra as a premium outdoor-oriented watch with a titanium cushion design, 10 ATM and IP68 water resistance, and a depth rating up to 100 meters. Those ratings do not mean it is suitable for every water activity. The Samsung product page lists the specifications and, as of the information available for this article, a starting price of $649.99 before trade-in; live offers can change.

Why did some Android enthusiasts object to the rumored price?

The comments collected by Droid Life raised several different concerns. They show what a vocal group of technology enthusiasts questioned, not what most Android users thought.

Price without a clear case for the premium

Some commenters considered roughly $700 too much for a smartwatch bought alongside a phone. One put their personal ceiling near $250; another asked what could justify such a high price. The underlying challenge was value: buyers wanted a substantial advantage over less expensive Galaxy Watch models, not just an Ultra label.

Concerns about responsiveness

One commenter argued that Samsung needed to address sluggish response times before charging a premium. That is a reported user concern, not evidence that every Galaxy Watch was slow or that the Ultra had a verified universal performance problem.

A design that could disappoint Classic owners

Some reactions objected to the rumored design and, in particular, the loss of a physical rotating bezel. For owners who use the Classic bezel to navigate, the Ultra was not simply a bigger Classic: its different design could be a reason to skip it, regardless of its durability credentials.

Galaxy-only features and the Pixel-user test

A commenter who used a Pixel argued that a watch at this price should provide its major functions across Android phones rather than reserve features for Galaxy owners. That is a meaningful buying question for non-Samsung users: “works with Android” does not by itself establish that every health or software feature works on every Android phone. Check compatibility for the specific features you intend to use.

Battery hopes, with a price limit

One Galaxy Watch 6 Classic owner was interested in a larger watch because of battery-life frustration, but still rejected the rumored price. That reaction captures the trade-off: a larger chassis may appeal to people seeking more endurance, but the premium depends on whether the battery improvement meets their needs. The comments alone do not establish a measured battery result.

Promotions complicate the MSRP comparison

Another commenter noted that Samsung products can be discounted through promotions and trade-ins, and questioned whether a premium over the LTE Galaxy Watch 5 Pro would buy enough beyond battery capacity. Samsung’s product page and trade-in program show why MSRP is only one part of the purchase calculation: the value depends on the offer, eligible device, condition, region, and date. Financing changes payment timing, not the total cost, unless a separate promotion reduces it.

Was this a backlash among Android users generally?

No broad conclusion follows from the comments. The evidence is a set of reactions gathered by an Android-focused technology publication, and the original coverage cautioned that its commenters might not represent average Android consumers. It is fair to describe the response as early online skepticism among some enthusiasts. It is not evidence that Android owners as a whole rejected the watch, that the market rejected it, or that the comments predicted sales.

What would justify paying for the Ultra?

The decision is not just about case material. At this price, the watch needs to suit how you use it and work well with your phone. Consider these questions before comparing it with a cheaper Galaxy watch or another kind of wearable:

  • WHY GALAXY WATCH ULTRA: Longest-lasting battery yet.¹* Advanced health and sleep tracking features.* Personalized Running Coach.* Durable titanium casing.* 10ATM Water Resistance.⁹* Dual-frequency GPS.* Personal AI assistant for hands free help.⁶*
  • A BATTERY BUILT FOR ENDURANCE: Have the confidence to adventure off-grid with a battery that can keep up with you. Galaxy Watch Ultra features our longest-lasting battery yet,¹ so you can go to the extreme for days on end without needing to recharge.
  • YOUR ADVENTURE STARTS THE NIGHT BEFORE: Fuel tomorrow’s performance with a great night’s sleep, thanks to Advanced Sleep Coaching² - now improved with even more ways to help you sleep smarter.
  • BUILT FOR THE LONG RUN: Whether you’re on a trail or a track, unleash the winning runner within using Running Coach³ on Galaxy Watch Ultra. It analyzes factors⁴ such as your age, weight, oxygen levels and heart rate to guide you through your run.
  • UPDATES THAT GIVE YOU THE EDGE: Navigate the wild more easily with Now Bar⁵ and an improved user experience. Now Bar conveniently puts the info you use the most - like weather, timers, directions and more - right on your main Watch screen.
  • Battery endurance: Does its larger form factor deliver enough practical benefit for your charging routine? Look for model- and usage-specific evidence rather than assuming a larger case guarantees a particular runtime.
  • Outdoor use and durability: Would the titanium construction and published water-resistance specifications matter in your activities? A depth rating is not blanket approval for scuba diving or every water sport.
  • GPS and fitness needs: Decide whether your running, hiking, or cycling habits require the Ultra’s outdoor-oriented positioning, and assess the navigation and tracking functions you actually use.
  • Health features and compatibility: Verify each important measurement or software feature for your phone, account, app, and region. Do not assume feature parity between a Galaxy phone and a Pixel or another Android device.
  • Performance and reliability: A premium watch should feel responsive and dependable in daily use; consider independent testing of the specific model and software version when evaluating that claim.
  • Design: Choose the rugged Ultra form if it suits you, but factor in the absence of the physical rotating bezel if that is central to your experience with a Classic watch.
  • LTE: The cited $649.99 MSRP is for the LTE model. Decide whether standalone connectivity is useful enough to justify the cost, and check whether your carrier requires a separate service plan.
  • Actual checkout price: Compare the current offer and your eligible trade-in with the standard Galaxy Watch options. Samsung’s buying page and offers page are time-sensitive; confirm the terms for your region and purchase date.

Who is the Galaxy Watch Ultra a better fit for?

Consider it if you value the rugged, outdoor-oriented package

The Ultra is easier to justify for someone who specifically wants its premium construction and durability specifications, uses outdoor or fitness features regularly, and prefers its design. Galaxy-phone owners may also find it a more natural fit if the functions they care about rely on Samsung’s ecosystem. An eligible trade-in can change the effective price, but only the offer attached to the buyer’s own device and purchase date establishes the saving.

Look at the Galaxy Watch7 if you do not need the Ultra tier

The Galaxy Watch7 is the in-family alternative for buyers seeking a Samsung smartwatch without the Ultra’s rugged positioning. Samsung’s July 2024 MSRP sheet listed Watch7 models from $299.99 to $379.99 depending on size and connectivity; those are historical U.S. launch MSRPs, not a statement of today’s prices. Samsung’s Galaxy Watches page is the place to check currently available models and offers.

Skip the premium if your needs are basic or specific

A buyer who mainly wants notifications, step counts, alarms, and music controls may not need to pay for an outdoor-focused flagship. The same is true for budget-conscious shoppers, people who consider a Classic’s physical bezel essential, and non-Samsung Android users who need particular health or AI functions to work without a Galaxy phone. People with smaller wrists should also consider whether the large, rugged form is comfortable. If multi-day or multi-week endurance is the priority, compare real-world tests of the alternatives rather than assuming the Ultra matches specialist fitness watches.

Why Samsung’s premium tier faced a higher bar

Samsung was placing the Ultra in the premium rugged-watch category, where buyers expect more than a bigger case: durability, useful outdoor functions, dependable software, and compatibility that matches the price. Apple Watch Ultra was a visible example of this market tier, but that context does not make the devices equivalent or establish that Samsung copied Apple. The commenters’ central question was more practical: would the Ultra offer enough over Samsung’s standard watches to warrant its premium?
