The Rolex Explorer II Reference 1655: A Collector’s Guide

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Rolex Explorer II reference 1655 is a stainless-steel sports watch introduced in 1971 for people who needed to distinguish day from night in places without daylight. Its fixed 24-hour bezel and large orange hand make it immediately recognizable. Collectors call that hand “Freccione,” Italian for “big arrow”; the popular “Steve McQueen” nickname is not supported by photographic evidence of McQueen wearing the watch.

What is the Explorer II 1655?

Rolex designed the 1655 for spelunkers and other users who could lose their sense of day and night underground. The fixed bezel is marked for 24 hours, and the orange arrow hand circles once per day. Read its position against the bezel to tell whether it is day or night; it is not a second time zone that can be set independently.

The reference combines a stainless-steel Oyster case and bracelet with an automatic caliber 1570 movement, a date display, and luminous elements. Auction catalogues describe examples at different diameters, so a single exact case measurement should not be treated as universal.

Why is it called the “Freccione” or “Steve McQueen”?

Freccione

“Freccione” means “big arrow” in Italian. It refers to the 1655’s conspicuous orange 24-hour hand and describes a visible design feature rather than a separate model.

Steve McQueen

“Steve McQueen” is a collector nickname, not an established wearer attribution. Christie’s 2012 lot essay says there are no photographs showing McQueen wearing a 1655 and presents the connection as collector speculation, possibly encouraged to attract interest. The nickname should not be treated as provenance or proof of a particular example’s history.

How long was the 1655 made, and how much do examples vary?

Published auction catalogues place production from 1971 into the mid-1980s, but their stated final years differ. Sotheby’s gives 1971–1984 in one catalogue and 1971–1985 in another. Treat the endpoint as approximate rather than assigning every watch a definitive final production year from those references alone.

Catalogue detail What it establishes
Case diameter: 38 mm Sotheby’s catalogue, 2020, for one 1971 example; it is a lot-specific measurement, not a universal specification.
Case diameter: 39 mm Christie’s catalogue, 2012, for an early 1971 example; it is also lot-specific.
Production dates Sotheby’s catalogues give 1971–1984 and 1971–1985 respectively; the differing endpoints support “into the mid-1980s,” not one certain final year.

Dial layouts changed during the run. Collectors use “Mark” labels, including Mark V, to describe dial variants; Sotheby’s notes differences in the coronet, text, and hand details. These labels are collector designations, so a Mark name by itself does not authenticate a watch or establish its exact production date.

How can you assess originality and condition?

A vintage 1655 should be evaluated as a combination of parts, condition, and documented history. A correct-looking detail is not enough on its own: compare the whole watch with reliable records for its configuration, and have authenticity assessed by a specialist before purchase.

Dial, hands, and luminous material

  • Compare the dial’s coronet, lettering, and layout with the claimed variant. Since designs changed over the production run, a detail that fits one configuration may not fit another.
  • Check whether the orange 24-hour hand and other hands appear consistent with the dial and the claimed configuration. Ask the seller to identify any replacement or service parts rather than assuming every component is original.
  • Ask what is known about the luminous elements and whether they have been replaced or altered. The available catalogue descriptions establish that examples have luminous elements, but do not provide a universal test or specification for authenticating lume.
  • Request clear, well-lit photographs of the dial and hands, and compare them with the specific variant being represented—not just with images of a different 1655.

Case, bezel, and bracelet

  • Inspect the case shape and edges for signs of heavy polishing or loss of original geometry. A polished case may still be genuine, but its condition affects both originality and desirability.
  • Examine the fixed 24-hour bezel for wear, damage, or replacement. Compare its markings and condition with the watch’s claimed configuration.
  • Check the bracelet and endlinks for fit, condition, and any disclosed replacements. Ask the seller to distinguish original components from later or service parts.

Movement, records, and independent review

  • Request documentation of service history and a movement inspection from a qualified watchmaker familiar with vintage Rolex watches. A stated caliber alone does not prove that the movement or the complete watch is original.
  • Compare any serial or other identifying information with the seller’s account and available documentation. Do not infer a precise production date from a broad date range alone.
  • Review provenance, box, and papers as supporting documentation, not as a substitute for examining the watch. Have an independent specialist assess the watch before committing if its originality or condition is uncertain.

What should you compare before buying?

Configuration and condition

Start by identifying the specific dial and hand configuration offered, then judge the case, bezel, bracelet, lume, and movement against that claim. Two watches described as 1655s can differ meaningfully in originality and condition, so a generic reference-level description is not enough to compare them.

Provenance and completeness

Ask for the service record, known ownership history, and an itemized account of original, replacement, or service components. Box and papers can add useful context when credible and associated with the watch, but they do not independently establish authenticity.

Auction estimates and realized prices

When using auction results to judge value, compare watches with similar condition, configuration, and completeness. Keep the estimate separate from the realized price: an estimate is not a sale result. The catalogues cited here establish relevant reference details but do not provide a comparable set of prices from which to claim a current market value or rarity percentage.

Is the 1655 really the “ultimate” sports Rolex?

“Ultimate” is a matter of taste, not a measurable ranking. The 1655 has a distinctive purpose-built display, a long production history, and multiple dial configurations that make it rewarding to study. It is also a vintage watch whose originality and condition must be assessed individually. Buy the specific example—not just the nickname or reference—with its configuration, condition, and documentation clearly understood.
