The three Omega Speedmaster references commonly identified with lunar-surface wear are ST 105.003, ST 105.012, and ST 145.012. The evidence is not equally direct for all three: Omega explicitly identifies Apollo 17 astronaut Gene Cernan’s Moon-worn watch as an ST 105.003, while the three-reference grouping comes from specialist historical coverage. It is important to distinguish watches worn on the lunar surface from watches that merely flew to the Moon.
Which Speedmaster references were worn on the Moon?
The commonly cited three-reference group is ST 105.003, ST 105.012, and ST 145.012, as listed in specialist watch history by Fratello. Official sources provide useful context and confirm particular examples, but do not independently enumerate all three references as lunar-surface watches.
| Reference | Associated evidence | What the evidence establishes |
|---|---|---|
| ST 105.003 | Omega identifies Gene Cernan’s Apollo 17 watch as an ST 105.003 in its Apollo 17 account. Swatch Group’s historical account also places the reference in the NASA and Apollo Speedmaster story: Swatch Group. | The strongest direct Omega identification among the three: Cernan wore this reference on the lunar surface. |
| ST 105.012 | Specialist historical coverage includes it in the three-reference group. Swatch Group identifies it in its discussion of the Moonwatch used in the Apollo 11 film context. | It belongs to the commonly cited group, but the sources cited here do not identify a specific lunar-surface-worn example by astronaut and reference. |
| ST 145.012 | Specialist historical coverage includes it in the three-reference group and describes Michael Collins’s Apollo 11 example as staying in the Command Module. | Collins’s watch flew to the Moon but was not worn on the lunar surface during Apollo 11. |
Why “went to the Moon” is not the same as “worn on the Moon”
A watch could accompany an Apollo mission without being worn outside on the lunar surface. Michael Collins’s Apollo 11 Speedmaster is the clearest example: it remained in the Command Module while Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin descended to the Moon. That makes Collins’s ST 145.012 a mission-associated watch, not evidence that it was worn on Apollo 11’s lunar surface.
The Smithsonian’s collection record for Neil Armstrong’s Speedmaster says NASA issued him an Omega Speedmaster chronograph for Apollo 11. That establishes mission use. The cited record excerpt does not specify the watch’s reference, so it should not be used to assign Armstrong’s watch a precise reference number.

How NASA qualification fits into the story
NASA announced the Speedmaster’s qualification for “all manned space missions” on 1 March 1965, according to both Swatch Group and Omega. Qualification explains how the watch became part of NASA’s crewed-spaceflight equipment; it does not mean every watch issued or flown was worn on a lunar surface, nor does it establish that only one reference reached the surface.
The clearest named lunar example: Gene Cernan’s ST 105.003
Apollo 17 landed on 11 December 1972. Omega identifies Cernan’s watch from the mission as an ST 105.003 and says it is held at the Omega Museum in Biel, Switzerland. In Omega’s 2022 anniversary account, the company’s president and CEO, Raynald Aeschlimann, called Apollo 17 “the sixth time in history that our Speedmaster was worn on the moon” and described it as the final milestone of the company’s lunar story.

Omega’s account says Cernan and fellow Apollo 17 astronauts spent approximately 75 hours on the lunar surface. Both that duration and Aeschlimann’s description of the “sixth time” are company-stated details in the 2022 account, rather than independent statistical findings.
Historic references versus the modern Moonwatch
The three references above are historic watches, not current model names. Omega’s 2024 announcement of a white-dial Speedmaster Moonwatch Professional describes a modern 42 mm watch powered by Calibre 3861. That current-production Moonwatch belongs to the wider Speedmaster lineage, but it is not one of the three historic references associated with lunar-surface wear.
