Fratello Watches’ 2021 feature centers on one imperfect example, so its ownership and service details are anecdotes—not a guide to every watch bearing this reference.
What is a TV dial watch?
A TV dial is a watch dial whose outline resembles an old television screen: broadly rectangular or square, with softened corners. On the Genève ST 166.0190, the dial shape works with a tonneau case—one that widens through the middle and tapers toward its ends—to create a cohesive, unmistakably 1970s look.
The phrase can also describe a watch whose crystal or bezel creates a television-like outline even when the dial itself is round. That distinction matters when comparing designs: Omega’s Seamaster 176.005 ST, for instance, is cited for a TV-like effect created by its crystal shape, despite having a round dial.
What is the Omega Genève ST 166.0190?
Fratello’s October 2021 feature describes the ST 166.0190 as an automatic Genève produced for Omega’s international collection in 1974–1975, a date range the article attributes to Omega’s website. The feature reports a case 36 mm wide and 44 mm from lug to lug. Those dimensions give the watch a substantial outline on paper, while its rounded case and dial shapes soften the impression.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Movement and functions
The feature identifies the movement as Omega caliber 1012, with an automatic winding system, quickset date, and hacking seconds. It reports a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour and a 42-hour power reserve. These are the specifications stated in the 2021 article; they should not be treated as an independent inspection of any particular example.
Why were TV dials popular in the ’70s?
The ST 166.0190 illustrates the period’s attraction to stronger, more geometric forms: a case that departs from the familiar round watch, a matching squared dial, and a silhouette that reads as intentional rather than merely functional. The result is unusual without being as visually busy as a chronograph. The design argument is less about proving that every buyer in the decade wanted a TV dial and more about seeing how a different outline can make a restrained watch memorable.

Fratello places the look alongside watches such as the Heuer Silverstone and Omega Speedmaster TV 176.0014. The Seamaster 176.005 ST offers a related but distinct interpretation, where the crystal rather than the dial supplies the television-like impression. These examples share a design reference, not necessarily the same case, movement, or wearing experience.
What makes this example compelling—and what does its story not prove?
Fratello author Nacho Conde Garzón’s watch was a bargain in his own account: he said he paid €60 including shipping. The same feature recounts an unsigned replacement crown, a Fixo-Flex bracelet, scratched plexiglass, and a crown-retention problem that recurred after he tried to reseat the stem. He polished the crystal with Polywatch, but the crown later fell out again and the watch still needed service.

Those details are useful as a reminder that a low purchase price can come with unresolved condition issues. They are not defining faults of the ST 166.0190, nor do they establish the reference’s present market value. The author also recounted estimates of €400 from a local watchmaker and €550 for official Omega service; both were historical figures tied to his situation in 2021, not current quotes.
What should you check before buying a vintage ST 166.0190?
Assess the individual watch rather than assuming that another example shares the condition of the one in the feature. A competent watchmaker can examine its running condition, crown operation, and service needs; a careful inspection should also address originality and visible wear.

- Service history: Request documentation where available. If service history or operation is uncertain, get an assessment before treating the watch as ready to wear.
- Authentication: OMEGA announced a Certificate of Authenticity initiative for vintage timepieces in 2019, but that announcement alone does not establish the authenticity of a specific watch or confirm its current eligibility.
For more on the reference and its owner’s experience, see Fratello Watches’ 2021 feature on the Omega Genève ST 166.0190. OMEGA’s 2019 announcement of its vintage Certificate of Authenticity provides historical context, not a verdict on an individual watch.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Are TV-dial watches cool?
That is a matter of taste, but the ST 166.0190 makes a persuasive case if you want a vintage watch with a recognizable shape and comparatively restrained styling. Its appeal comes from the whole composition—the tonneau case, TV-shaped dial, and period character—not from any claim that the reference is rare, undervalued, or easy to find in a particular condition. As Conde Garzón put it in the feature’s conclusion: “It also proves that different sometimes is indeed better.”
