They matter for different reasons: the SLA081 is Seiko’s technical flagship, the SPB509 adds genuinely useful GMT functionality to a historic diver design, and the VANAC revives a distinctive 1970s King Seiko line with the new 8L45 movement. This is an editorial selection based on technical novelty, historical importance and audience appeal—not an official Seiko ranking.

Prices and availability above are Seiko’s European recommendations in the March 6, 2025 announcements. Seiko planned July 2025 sales for the SLA081 and regular VANAC models, and June 2025 sales for the SPB509, through its boutiques and select retailers worldwide.
1. Prospex Marinemaster Professional SLA081
The SLA081 is the most technically ambitious of the three. Seiko announced it on March 6, 2025, as one of three Prospex creations marking 60 years of Seiko diver’s watches. Its defining feature is the new Caliber 8L45 inside a one-piece titanium case built for 600m saturation diving.
Why the SLA081 matters
This is not simply a commemorative dial or a familiar case with a new color. The watch combines Seiko’s new high-end automatic caliber with a professional saturation-diver architecture. The case uses an L-shaped gasket designed to prevent helium infiltration, so Seiko does not need a helium escape valve. That construction is paired with a dual-curved sapphire crystal and a titanium bracelet with super-hard coating.
#1 Best Overall
- Blue Dial Style: Blue dial and silver-tone 38mm case pair with an adjustable brown crocodile-grain leather strap for daily wear
- Adjustable Leather Strap: A 20mm genuine leather band fits up to an 8-inch wrist circumference for secure, comfortable everyday wear
- Durable Construction: A 38mm brass case with a mineral glass crystal is built for everyday reliability through years of daily wear
- Indiglo Backlight: A quick push of the button illuminates the dial in the dark, whenever it's needed most, day after day
- Built to Last: A Timex watch is designed for durability and everyday reliability; every piece reflects our commitment to quality without compromise
Movement and performance
- Caliber 8L45 automatic movement
- 28,800 vibrations per hour
- 35 jewels
- 72-hour power reserve
- Stated accuracy tolerance of +10 to −5 seconds per day
Case, size and limitation
The titanium case measures 45.4mm in diameter and 16.0mm thick. That is substantial even among professional dive watches, and the dimensions should be treated as a central buying consideration rather than a footnote. Water resistance is rated at 600m for saturation diving. Production is limited to 600 pieces, with a European recommended retail price of €5,200.
Seiko’s announcement also connected the model with the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) Arctic research program in 2025. That provides context for the watch’s intended professional identity, but it does not turn the limited edition into research equipment for ordinary owners.
2. Prospex 1968 Heritage Diver’s GMT SPB509
The SPB509 is the most broadly useful release. It takes design cues from Seiko’s 1968 diver and adds a GMT hand that can be adjusted independently, allowing a second time zone to be set without stopping the main hands.
What the GMT function changes
Caliber 6R54’s independently adjustable 24-hour hand makes the SPB509 practical for travelers and anyone who regularly tracks another time zone. It preserves the basic logic of a mechanical diver while adding a complication that has a clear everyday use.

Seiko announced the SPB509 on March 6, 2025, with availability planned for June 2025 through Seiko boutiques and select retailers worldwide.

The silver-dial SPB511 offers a useful reference point within the same anniversary program, but it is not a GMT model.

The SPB509 therefore costs €400 more in Europe and is 2mm wider than the SPB511, with the difference largely explained by the GMT-capable movement and related functionality.
3. King Seiko VANAC: SLA083, SLA085, SLA087, SLA089 and SLA091
The VANAC is the year’s most important design and collection revival. Seiko’s March 6, 2025 announcement brought the name back after more than 50 years; the original VANAC series ran from 1972 to 1976. The new watches reinterpret that idea with an angular, bezel-less case and dial colors inspired by Tokyo’s horizon.

The range
- SLA083, SLA085 and SLA087: regular models, each listed at €3,400 in Europe.
- SLA089: a 700-piece limited edition.
- SLA091: a boutique-exclusive model.
Seiko planned a July 2025 sales start for the regular models. The official material identifies the range as a five-model structure, with the limited and boutique editions supplementing the three regular references.
Why the VANAC is mechanically significant
The collection introduces Caliber 8L45 to King Seiko. Seiko states a 72-hour power reserve and an accuracy tolerance of +10 to −5 seconds per day; a second official release describes the reserve as more than 72 hours. The movement has 35 jewels and is visible through a transparent case back—the first see-through back in the King Seiko collection since its 2022 relaunch.
Wear and construction
The stainless-steel case measures 41.0mm × 14.3mm, uses a box-shaped sapphire crystal and carries a 10-bar water-resistance rating. This is a sports-dress watch, not a professional diver: its appeal is the faceted case, unusual profile and historical design language rather than extreme water resistance.

Technical purpose
The SLA081 is engineered for saturation-diving specifications. The SPB509 is a serious 300m diver that adds independent GMT utility. The VANAC is a 10-bar everyday sports-dress watch built around design and collection heritage.

Movement choice
The SLA081 and VANAC share Caliber 8L45, including its 72-hour reserve and stated +10 to −5 seconds-per-day tolerance. The SPB509 uses the 6R54 because its key requirement is an independently adjustable GMT hand rather than the 8L45’s positioning at the top of Seiko’s mechanical range.
Size and scarcity
The VANAC is the smallest at 41mm, followed by the 42mm SPB509. The SLA081 is dramatically larger at 45.4mm and 16mm thick. Scarcity follows a similar hierarchy: 600 SLA081 examples, 700 SLA089 examples, and 6,000 SPB509 examples.
Which 2025 Seiko should you choose?
Choose the SLA081 if you want Seiko’s technical statement
Pick the SLA081 for its 600m saturation-diver construction, titanium case and first use of Caliber 8L45 in the Prospex line. Its €5,200 European price, 45.4mm diameter, 16mm thickness and 600-piece limit make it a specialist purchase for enthusiasts who specifically want the flagship diver experience.
Choose the SPB509 if you want the most useful complication
The SPB509 is the rational choice for a wearer who values a historical Seiko diver format but will actually use a second time zone. Its 42mm case, 300m rating, 72-hour reserve and €1,900 European price make it considerably easier to live with than the SLA081 while retaining strong anniversary significance.

The VANAC is the choice for someone drawn to angular 1970s Seiko design, unusual dial colors and a visible high-grade movement. At 41mm it is the most compact option, but its 10-bar rating means it should be understood as a sports-dress watch rather than a dive instrument.
Why these three mattered in 2025
Together, the releases show three distinct directions for Seiko. The SLA081 advances professional-diver engineering; the SPB509 turns an anniversary reissue into a more versatile travel watch; and the VANAC expands King Seiko beyond conservative heritage styling with a recognizable period design and the 8L45 caliber. That combination—not a single official ranking—makes them the three 2025 launches most worth a close look.
