Verdict: A Tudor Prince Oysterdate sold as a “Jumbo” can be a compelling vintage buy, but the nickname is not a dependable formal reference. Value depends on the verified reference and serial, original condition, movement, bracelet, service history and comparable sales—not on “Jumbo” printed in a listing.
What “Jumbo” means on a Tudor Prince Oysterdate
“Jumbo” is a collector and dealer description rather than a consistently standardized Tudor model name. Its use varies within the Prince family. An auction catalog, for example, describes a different Prince-family reference, 7020/0, as a “JUMBO” Turnograph. That usage shows why a seller’s nickname cannot establish the identity of a watch offered as a Tudor Prince Oysterdate 9050.
Ask for the reference, serial number, movement photographs and case-back details before treating any “Jumbo” claim as meaningful. A watch may be large-looking relative to another vintage Tudor, yet still require the same reference-level verification as any other Oysterdate.
The Oyster Prince foundation
TUDOR’s official history dates the Oyster Prince launch to 1952. The model combined the waterproof Oyster case with Perpetual self-winding rotor technology associated with Rolex. Hans Wilsdorf described the intent this way:

“I have decided that the TUDOR Prince deserves to share with Rolex two advantages I would allow no other watch to use – the famous and unique waterproof Oyster case and the original self-winding Perpetual ’rotor’ mechanism.”
Hans Wilsdorf, quoted in TUDOR’s official history
That heritage is the real historical basis for the Prince’s appeal: a Tudor-branded watch with Rolex-linked case and winding technology, offered in a more attainable vintage market than many Rolex Oyster references. It does not, however, make every cosmetically similar Oysterdate original or every example equally valuable.

Where the 9050 fits in the chronology
| Period or reference | What is established | Buying implication |
|---|---|---|
| 1952 Oyster Prince | TUDOR records the launch of the Oyster Prince with the Oyster case and Perpetual self-winding rotor technology. | Provides the family’s historical foundation, not a specification for every later reference. |
| 1976 Prince Oysterdate chronograph family | TUDOR dates the debut of this self-winding chronograph family to 1976; collectors call its thicker case “Big Block.” | “Big Block” describes that thicker chronograph lineage and should not automatically be applied to a 9050. |
| 9050/0 example | A collector listing identifies a 9050/0 dated 1978, and WatchCharts maintains a dedicated Prince Oysterdate 9050 model record. | Use the actual 9050 reference and serial to identify the watch; do not use “Jumbo” as a substitute. |
| 79100 series | TUDOR says the 79100 series followed the Big Block family in 1989 with minimal changes. | It is a later chronology point and should not be presented as evidence that a 9050 is a 79100. |
The evidence supports placing 9050 examples within the broader Prince Oysterdate market. It does not establish a complete 9050 variant chronology or an authoritative production total.
How large is a Tudor 9050?
One 9050/0 listing reports approximately the following measurements:
| Measurement | Reported figure | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Diameter | About 34 mm, including the crown | Listing measurement, not a confirmed factory specification |
| Lug width | 19 mm | Listing measurement |
| Lug-to-lug | About 40 mm | Listing measurement |
| Thickness | About 10.5 mm | Listing measurement |
Those dimensions describe that listed example only. Bezel, crown, crystal, case wear and the method used to measure can alter the result. Request measurements from the specific watch you are considering rather than assuming that every 9050 or every “Jumbo” has identical proportions.

What actually creates value
A 9050’s value proposition is the combination of history, wearability and individual condition. The nickname may attract attention, but it cannot compensate for an incorrect dial, over-polished case or mismatched movement.
Reference and serial consistency
Check that the reference visible on the case and the serial information are consistent with the seller’s description and period. Ask for clear, straight-on photographs rather than cropped images. If the reference, serial or movement identity cannot be established, treat the watch as unverified and price it accordingly.
Dial and hand originality
Determine whether the dial and hands are original, period-correct replacements or refinished. A refinished dial can look attractive but generally carries a different collector value from an original dial. Ask whether any work was disclosed and request high-resolution images before purchase.

Movement and service evidence
Movement photographs should show the calibre and condition clearly enough for an independent watchmaker to assess them. Service receipts, when available, are useful evidence of maintenance, but a receipt alone does not prove that every component is correct for the reference. If no service history exists, budget for professional inspection and possible servicing.
Case condition and polishing
Examine the lugs, case edges, bezel and corrosion. Heavy polishing can remove original geometry; corrosion can affect both appearance and structural integrity. Ask for photographs of every side, the case back and the area between the lugs before relying on a seller’s condition grade.
Bracelet and clasp
Verify that the bracelet and clasp are correct or honestly described as replacements. A period-correct bracelet can materially improve collectibility, while a later or aftermarket bracelet should be reflected in the price. Look for clear clasp and end-link photographs, not just a statement that the watch is “all original.”

Box, papers and provenance
Box and papers can support provenance, but they do not override inconsistencies in the watch itself. Give greater weight to a matching reference, serial, movement and documented ownership history than to an attractive presentation set.

- Request the full reference and serial, plus uncropped photographs of the dial, case back, movement, clasp and lugs.
- Compare those details with the seller’s stated model and with established reference records, including WatchCharts’ Prince Oysterdate 9050 model record.
- Have an independent vintage-watch specialist assess dial originality, hand replacement, movement identity and case work before the return period expires.
- Get every disclosed replacement or restoration in writing on the invoice.
- Walk away when the seller will not provide movement access, clear serial photographs or a reasonable return option.
No single photograph can authenticate a vintage Tudor. The strongest protection is consistency across the physical watch, documentation and an independent inspection.
How to judge an asking price
There is no defensible universal “Tudor Jumbo” price. Current value changes with originality, condition, completeness, service status and the exact reference. Use model-level market tracking and recent auction comparables, then adjust for the individual watch.
| Price question | Evidence to use | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Is the model correctly identified? | Reference, serial, movement and case details | A nickname can group unlike Prince-family watches under one label. |
| Is the condition premium justified? | Dial originality, case geometry, corrosion and movement condition | Two watches with the same reference can have very different collector value. |
| Is the asking price market-based? | WatchCharts’ model record and relevant auction results | Asking prices are not completed-sale evidence. |
| Are extras adding real value? | Matching papers, period bracelet and documented provenance | Accessories help only when they are credible and correctly associated with the watch. |

Who should buy one?
A verified 9050 can suit a buyer who wants a compact vintage Oyster watch, appreciates Tudor’s Rolex-linked history and is comfortable evaluating originality and service risk. It is a poor choice for someone who wants modern water-resistance assurances, effortless parts support or a purchase justified solely by the word “Jumbo.”
Buy the watch that can be documented, inspected and compared—not the nickname. When reference, originality, condition and price all align, the Prince Oysterdate offers a credible vintage value case without needing an exaggerated label.
