The vintage Vacheron Constantin 222 and today’s Historiques reissues share the design’s defining silhouette, but they are not identical watches. The original arrived in 1977; the modern gold and steel editions pair familiar 37 mm proportions with a contemporary automatic movement, a display back and a manufacturer-rated 50 m water resistance. For a vintage example, the exact reference, condition and documentation matter more than a broad comparison to the modern model.
What separates a vintage 222 from a modern one?
The clearest differences are the available materials and references, the movement and caseback, and the specifications Vacheron Constantin publishes for the modern watches. Vintage examples span multiple sizes and variants, so a comparison is most useful when it identifies the specific vintage reference rather than treating every 222 as the same watch.

Why the 222 matters in Vacheron Constantin’s history
Vacheron Constantin dates the 222’s launch to 1977, the year of its 222nd anniversary, and credits Jorg Hysek with the design. The Maison describes it as a shift in its sports-watch vocabulary: sporting cues shaped into a sleek, angular, elegant watch. The 222 is often discussed alongside integrated-bracelet sports watches, but its appeal also lies in its restrained proportions and dressier finish. Forbes’s 2022 account describes the original range as extending beyond the 37 mm Jumbo to smaller sizes and later material and setting variations. That wider range is why “vintage 222” should not be assumed to mean one size or configuration. Forbes

What changed in the modern Historiques editions?
The 2022 yellow-gold reissue
The first modern Historiques 222, introduced in 2022, revived the Jumbo format in 18K 3N yellow gold. Its reference is 4200H/222J-B935. The official specification lists a 37 mm case, 7.95 mm thickness, gold-toned dial, date at three o’clock, sapphire display back and yellow-gold bracelet. Vacheron Constantin
The 2025 stainless-steel edition
Reference 4200H/222A-B934 is the steel reissue, introduced in 2025. It keeps the stated 37 mm diameter and 7.95 mm thickness, while changing to a blue dial and stainless-steel bracelet. Movement and shared specifications
For both current references, Vacheron Constantin specifies automatic calibre 2455/2, a 40-hour power reserve and Geneva Seal certification. The manufacturer lists the movement at 26.2 mm in diameter and 3.6 mm thick. Both dials have luminous hands and markers, and the bracelet closes with a triple-folding clasp. For the 2022 gold version, Forbes also reported a dedicated engraved rotor, Super-LumiNova on the hands and markers, a repositioned date intended to improve readability, and a redesigned bracelet and clasp. Is the modern 222 the same size as the original Jumbo?
Both modern references are 37 mm, matching the diameter Forbes reports for the original Jumbo. That makes the reissues close in headline size, but diameter alone does not establish that the watches wear identically: case construction, bracelet condition and the proportions of other vintage variants all matter. A modern watch can be compared against published manufacturer specifications. A vintage watch calls for an individual assessment, because parts, condition and documentation can differ from one example to another.

- Identify the exact reference and configuration. Confirm the case material, size and whether the watch is a particular variant rather than assuming it is a 37 mm Jumbo.
- Request clear photographs. Ask to see the case, dial, movement and bracelet so a qualified specialist can assess condition and any visible alterations.
- Review service and provenance records. Ask what documentation accompanies the watch and have relevant records assessed alongside the watch itself.
- Treat water resistance as watch-specific. The 120 m figure Forbes reports for the vintage Jumbo does not establish that an individual decades-old example remains water-resistant.
A Phillips catalogue result documents one vintage 222 accompanied by a Vacheron Constantin Extract from the Archives confirming a 1977 manufacture date. It is an example of supporting provenance documentation, not proof that every watch has an extract or that an extract by itself verifies every component. Phillips
The sources cited here do not establish current vintage prices, service costs, availability or a complete reference-by-reference movement comparison. Those factors need to be checked for the specific watch and transaction rather than inferred from the modern specifications.
