Apple released watchOS 11 developer beta 2 on June 24, 2024. The release was testing software, not a stable consumer update. Its most practical change was the broader watchOS 11 Activity Rings redesign: users could pause ring progress for a day, week, month or longer without harming award-streak progress, and set different goals for different days of the week. Apple had announced those capabilities on June 10, so beta 2 made them available for testing rather than introducing an entirely new ring design.
What watchOS 11 beta 2 actually was
Contemporaneous coverage from BGR reported the second watchOS 11 developer beta on June 24, 2024, alongside beta releases for iOS 18, iPadOS 18, macOS Sequoia, tvOS 18 and visionOS 2. Apple had released the first watchOS 11 developer beta on June 10.
“Revamped Activity Rings” describes changes to goals and streak management, not a confirmed visual replacement of the three rings. Apple’s design documentation still identifies them as the Move, Exercise and Stand rings (Apple Developer).
Activity Rings: the changes that matter
Pause rings without sacrificing an award streak
In watchOS 11, you can pause Activity Rings for a day, week, month or longer. Apple says pausing does not affect existing award-streak progress. That gives you a way to schedule rest, recover from illness or injury, travel, or handle an unusually busy period without being pushed to exercise solely to preserve a streak.

Pausing protects continuity going forward; it does not necessarily restore a streak that was already broken before the pause.
Set goals by day of the week
Apple also added day-specific Activity Ring goals. A structured training week could use higher targets on workout days and lighter targets on recovery days, while a weekday-versus-weekend schedule can reflect a changing routine. Apple’s announcement does not establish that every ring has independent scheduling controls in every beta build, so the safest description is that Activity Ring goals can be customized by day.
The available sources do not verify a beta-2-specific menu path. Apple’s controls and labels may also have changed during testing.

Vitals puts several signals together
The Vitals app consolidates health measurements and highlights readings outside your typical range. Apple described contextual information that can appear when multiple metrics change together. The measurements it cited include heart rate, respiratory rate, wrist temperature, sleep duration and blood oxygen, although availability can vary by Apple Watch model, region and regulatory status.

A Vitals notification is not a diagnosis. An out-of-range reading can have many explanations, and the feature should not replace professional medical advice.
Training Load adds short- and long-term context
Training Load compares your recent workout strain with a longer baseline instead of treating one workout as a complete verdict.

- Recent period: the most recent seven days.
- Baseline: a 28-day training-load reference.
- Effort: a 1-to-10 rating. Some cardio workouts can receive an automatically estimated rating; you can adjust it or enter one manually when an estimate is unavailable.
- Comparison labels: well below, below, steady, above or well above your baseline.
A high result is not automatically bad, and a low result is not automatically good. Training Load is a trend and context tool, not an instruction to train or rest and not a performance diagnosis.
Fitness gets a more useful Summary tab
Apple said the Fitness app’s Summary tab could be customized so you choose the metrics and information shown. Examples included workout categories such as running, hiking and swimming, plus mindfulness information. This is an information-layout change rather than a requirement to use Apple Fitness+; Activity Rings, Vitals and Training Load do not require that subscription.

- On the paired iPhone, open the Apple Watch app.
- Tap My Watch.
- Tap General, then Software Update.
- Tap Beta Updates.
- Choose the available developer beta.
This is Apple’s documented route (Apple Developer Support), but enrollment screens and beta availability can change. The watch may also require a compatible iPhone running the corresponding iOS beta.
Compatibility and beta risks
Apple’s final watchOS 11 compatibility statement covered Apple Watch Series 6 or later paired with an iPhone XS or later running iOS 18. That does not guarantee that every beta feature worked on every compatible model; sensors, processors, region and regulatory approval can limit individual features.
- Expect possible bugs, crashes, connection failures, battery drain or incomplete features.
- Apple Watch recovery options are more limited than iPhone recovery options, so do not use a developer beta on a primary or mission-critical watch if reliability matters.
- Sync or back up important health and workout data before installing.
- Check compatibility with third-party fitness apps you depend on.
- Do not improvise a downgrade if the watch becomes unstable; use Apple’s supported recovery process.
Should you install watchOS 11 beta 2?
A reasonable choice for developers and testers
Beta 2 made sense if you needed to test an app against watchOS 11, wanted to evaluate pauseable rings and day-specific goals early, or were willing to report bugs while accepting unstable behavior.

Why most owners should wait
Wait if the watch is your only device, tracks sleep or workouts every day, supports emergency or medical-adjacent routines, or must maintain dependable battery life and Bluetooth connections. The public beta and final release offered a safer path for ordinary users.
When the stable version arrived
Apple released the finished watchOS 11 on September 16, 2024, as announced in its Apple Newsroom release. That date matters for anyone reading about beta 2 later: the developer test period is historical, and installing the beta is no longer necessary to obtain the watchOS 11 Activity Ring, Vitals, Training Load and Fitness features.
