Wear OS 5.1 Explained: Android 15/API 35, Supported Watches and Testing

Wear OS 5.1 is an Android 15/API 35 release, not a current developer preview. Here are its supported Pixel Watches, emulator setup, app changes and developer considerations for 2026.

Wear OS 5.1 is Google’s Android 15-based watch platform, using API level 35. It reached supported Pixel Watch models in March 2025, so it is no longer a new developer preview. For app teams, the practical task is to test API 35 behavior, update affected dependencies and verify watch-specific features on suitable hardware.

What Wear OS 5.1 means for watch apps

Wear OS 5.1 is based on Android 15 and API level 35; Wear OS 5 was based on Android 14. That shared Android foundation matters when compiling and targeting apps, but it does not mean a watch includes every feature or behavior found on an Android phone. Google, for example, says private spaces are not supported in Wear OS 5.1, and predictive back animations might not appear. Check Google’s Wear OS 5.1 documentation alongside the Android 15 behavior changes that apply to apps targeting API 35.

Google’s page documents Wear OS 5.1 as available on select watches and in the emulator. The “developer preview” label is therefore historical, not a description of the platform’s current availability. Google’s developer program has since adopted an Android Canary channel for early access, and its later platform coverage includes Wear OS 7.

Which watches and emulator images support Wear OS 5.1?

Google lists the original Pixel Watch, Pixel Watch 2 and Pixel Watch 3. Its documented rollout dates vary by model and connectivity. These are the release dates Google lists, not a guarantee of current update availability for every device: rollout timing can vary by region, carrier and update status.

The official emulator images are available for ARM 64 v8a and Intel x86_64. Google’s instructions specify Android Studio Ladybug Feature Drop or later and the Android 15.0 (“VanillaIceCream”) API 35-ext15 image. The documented builds are Pixel Watch 3 and Pixel Watch 2: BP1A.250305.019.W3; original Pixel Watch: BP1A.250305.019.W2; emulator: AP4A.241205.004.F4. These are the builds listed in Google’s Wear OS 5.1 documentation, not a claim that they are the newest images available in 2026.

Set up the Wear OS 5.1 emulator

  1. Install Android Studio Ladybug Feature Drop or later.
  2. Open Tools → SDK Manager. In SDK Platforms, enable Show Package Details.
  3. Expand Android 15.0 (“VanillaIceCream”) and install a Wear OS 5.1 system image under API level 35-ext15: ARM 64 v8a or Intel x86_64.
  4. Open Tools → Device Manager, then choose Add a new device → Image → Create Virtual Device.
  5. Select the Wear OS form factor and a hardware profile, then choose the Wear OS 5.1 API 35 image.
  6. Finish creating the virtual device, launch it and install your app.

The emulator is useful for repeatable UI, navigation, installation and API-level checks. It cannot fully stand in for physical testing of sensors, health workflows, battery and thermal behavior, Bluetooth or LTE connections, speaker output, or real-world notification and companion-device interactions. Use a watch when those paths matter to your app.

Update the project and test API 35 behavior

For projects using Android Gradle Plugin 7.0.0 or higher, Google’s examples set both the compile and target SDK to 35. The exact syntax depends on the build script.

Groovy

android {
    compileSdk 35

    defaultConfig {
        targetSdk 35
    }
}

Kotlin DSL

android {
    compileSdk = 35

    defaultConfig {
        targetSdk = 35
    }
}

Older Android Gradle Plugin versions use the legacy compileSdkVersion and targetSdkVersion syntax. Raising targetSdk is not just a build-number change: test the Android 15 behavior changes that apply to API 35 and verify that any newer APIs are guarded appropriately for older Wear OS versions your app still supports. The minimum supported SDK is a project decision, not something dictated by Wear OS 5.1.

New capabilities to evaluate

Credential Manager authentication

Wear OS 5.1 supports Credential Manager for unified sign-in flows involving passwords, passkeys and federated identity providers such as Sign in with Google. Treat this as an integration opportunity, not as a promise that a phone sign-in flow will work unchanged on a watch. Test credential-provider availability, account selection, the watch-sized interface, and interrupted or offline flows.

Media output through the watch speaker

On hardware that supports playback through the watch’s speaker, users can choose that output when an app integrates with the Wear Output Switcher. This is device-dependent; API 35 alone does not give every Wear OS 5.1 watch a speaker capable of media playback.

Known system-image issues and a library fix

Google lists the following issues for the Wear OS 5.1 system image. They are worth separating from general API 35 compatibility work:

  • The emulator may fail to add an account during setup after a device reset.
  • Tapping a notification may not open the sending app until the user scrolls.
  • Wear Health Services may sometimes fail to start an exercise.
  • Apps targeting API 35 may encounter a SecurityException with particular older library versions. Google’s documented remedies are to upgrade androidx.wear.tiles to 1.5.0-alpha05 or later, or androidx.wear:wear-phone-interactions to 1.1.0 or later.

Before attributing a failure to your app, note whether it reproduces on the emulator, a physical watch, or both, and record the system image and dependency versions. That helps distinguish a documented image issue from a project-specific problem.

Choose emulator or physical-device testing by risk

  • Use the emulator first for layout, navigation, installation, API-level behavior and repeatable regression checks.
  • Use physical watches for sensor and exercise sessions, battery use, Bluetooth and LTE, speaker output, notifications, account setup, companion-phone flows, and input differences between touch and rotating hardware.
  • Test your actual support range if the app also serves older Wear OS releases; passing on API 35 does not establish compatibility on every supported version.

Google says supported watches should receive an over-the-air update. Developers can also manually update compatible devices after enabling developer options and flashing a factory or full OTA image. Flashing is a developer workflow, not a normal consumer update path: selecting the wrong image, bootloader or USB-driver problems, or an interrupted process can cause data loss or leave a device unusable.

Two separate Wear OS release obligations for developers in 2026

Legacy watch faces

The watch-face transition is separate from Wear OS 5.1, but it affects teams publishing watch faces. Google announced that new legacy watch faces could no longer be published beginning January 27, 2025. From January 14, 2026, users could no longer install legacy watch faces from Google Play, and developers could no longer update or monetize them there. Google recommends migrating to the declarative Watch Face Format. See its watch-face policy announcement.

64-bit native code requirement

Beginning September 15, 2026, new Wear OS apps and updates that contain native code must provide 64-bit versions alongside 32-bit versions; Google Play will block non-compliant uploads. This is a publishing requirement, not a Wear OS 5.1 feature. Check native libraries and third-party SDKs as well as code built directly by your team. Google explains the change in its 64-bit readiness announcement.

Where Wear OS 5.1 sits in the platform timeline

Wear OS 5.1 is a useful Android 15/API 35 compatibility target, but it is not the newest Wear OS generation in 2026. Google’s developer updates discuss later platform releases, including Wear OS 6 and Wear OS 7. Those later releases do not change what API 35 testing means for apps that still need to support Wear OS 5.1.
