The “colorful upgrade” is Google’s Material 3 Expressive redesign for Wear OS, introduced with Wear OS 6. It lets compatible watch faces supply colors for parts of the system interface, alongside redesigned tiles, controls and animations. By August 2026, the change is no longer simply on the way: Wear OS 7 is rolling out to eligible Pixel Watch models, while availability and features on other watches depend on the model and manufacturer.
What the colorful upgrade actually changes
This is a software redesign, not a change to a watch’s display, case or color capabilities. It combines two related ideas: dynamic color, which can carry colors from a compatible watch face into supported parts of the interface, and Material 3 Expressive, Google’s broader design system for Wear OS.
Google introduced the redesign with Wear OS 6, describing dynamic color, redesigned controls and tiles, shape-morphing animations, and a battery-life improvement claim. Google’s Wear OS 6 announcement said Pixel devices would get the update first, with wider availability dependent on partners.
Dynamic color follows the watch face
- Choose a supported watch face.
- The face provides colors that Wear OS can use as theme colors.
- Compatible system screens and apps can use those colors, creating a more coordinated look.
Potentially affected surfaces include quick settings, notifications, buttons, tiles, settings screens and some Google apps. The result is not guaranteed to be identical throughout the watch: an older face, a third-party app with fixed brand colors, or an app that has not adopted the newer design guidance may keep its own palette. Google’s system color documentation describes watch-face- and image-based dynamic color.

Material 3 Expressive changes more than color
The redesign also adjusts how controls and content fit a small, round screen. Google’s guidance covers a broader tonal palette and additional color roles, as well as layouts and components designed for Wear OS rather than phone interfaces simply reduced in size. Buttons can adapt to the display’s shape, tiles and controls are intended to be easier to scan, and transitions can morph between shapes. These are design aims, not a guarantee that every screen will look or read better for every person. Google’s Wear OS design overview explains the round-screen principles.
New watch faces are a separate matter. A watch may support the updated system design without receiving every new Google face, and a face’s colors will influence system surfaces only where the face and software support that behavior.

Which watches get it?
Wear OS 6 introduced the core colorful redesign. Google announced in 2026 that Wear OS 7 was rolling out to eligible Pixel Watch devices; its Wear OS 7 announcement does not make the update universal to every Wear OS watch. A June 2026 Pixel Watch update discussion also documents availability for eligible models.
For a specific watch, check its model’s update status with the manufacturer. Eligibility and timing may vary by model, region, carrier or edition, and rollout phase. Even when a watch receives a suitable system update, it may not include the same faces or first-party features as a Pixel Watch. Apps and faces also need to support the relevant design or color behavior before they change.

How to customize a Pixel Watch face
There is no single universal setting that must be switched on under a menu called “Dynamic Color.” On a compatible watch, choosing and customizing a supported face may be all that is needed for the system to apply its palette where supported.
On the watch
- Touch and hold the current watch face.
- Swipe left or right to browse available faces, then tap the one you want.
- Tap Edit or Edit Image, when available, to adjust colors and complications.
In the Pixel Watch app
- Open the Pixel Watch app and tap Watch faces.
- Choose a face and tap Edit to adjust available colors and complications.
- Tap Use on watch.
Google’s Pixel Watch face instructions cover customization on the watch and in the app. For photo-based backgrounds, Google recommends keeping the Pixel Watch app and Google Photos current.

If the interface does not change color
Check the most likely causes before considering a reset:
- Confirm that the watch has received the relevant system update; for a non-Pixel watch, check the manufacturer’s update information.
- Install available watch-system and Google Play system updates, and update the companion app and relevant Google apps.
- Try a first-party face known to support the feature, then reopen its editor and save the selection again.
- Restart the watch and see whether the affected screen changes.
- If only one app or tile retains its old colors, it may not have adopted Material 3 Expressive or may use a fixed palette.
Google’s watch-face support guidance also advises updating the Pixel Watch app and Google Photos for photo backgrounds. A factory reset is not a sensible first response to one unchanged app or tile.

What Google’s battery claim means
Google said Wear OS 6 could deliver up to 10% better battery life under its stated conditions. That is a vendor claim, not a guaranteed or independently established result for every watch. Actual battery life depends on hardware and use, including display settings, workouts, LTE, GPS, notifications and apps. Google has also made a similar “up to 10%” claim for Wear OS 7; neither figure means that adding color itself saves power.
Is the upgrade a reason to replace your watch?
- If your watch is eligible: Treat the redesign as a software improvement to try, not a reason to buy new hardware.
- If your watch has not received the update: Check the manufacturer’s support status before assuming it will arrive. The design change alone is weak grounds for replacing a watch that otherwise meets your needs.
- If you are choosing a watch: Compare update support, battery life, app ecosystem and health features alongside appearance; a colorful interface does not establish which watch is the better fit.
- If you rely on third-party faces or apps: Check compatibility and expect that some surfaces may not follow the watch-face palette.
Google’s developer quality guidance says the Watch Face Format became required for installing watch faces on Wear OS devices as of January 2026. That requirement does not mean every existing face or app automatically adopts dynamic color. See Google’s Wear OS app-quality guidance for the format and quality criteria.
Color is not the same as legibility
A coordinated palette can make a watch feel more personal, but more color does not automatically improve readability. Contrast, text size, sunlight, low-light use and the information being shown all matter on a small screen. Color should not be the only cue: labels, shape and position are important too. A face or app may produce a visually appealing combination that is less practical for notifications or fitness data.
