They became a more continuous, specialized and software-defined layer around it. Smart rings moved from niche accessory to serious category, smartwatches pushed further into health monitoring, screenless glasses made camera-and-voice AI practical, and subscriptions became as important as sensors.
The transformation was real, but incomplete. Consumer readings are not automatically medical evidence, AI summaries can overstate what a sensor knows, and privacy, interoperability, battery life and clinical validation remain unresolved.
What changed in wearable technology during 2024?
Five shifts define 2024 more accurately than any single product launch.
The market became multi-form-factor
Smartwatches remained the main consumer interface for notifications, apps, safety and exercise. Around them grew smart rings, camera-and-audio glasses, patches, bands, sensor-enabled clothing and specialist performance devices. The result was a distributed system rather than one device category.

Monitoring became more continuous
Products increasingly emphasized sleep, heart rhythm, temperature, blood oxygen, stress, recovery and respiratory patterns instead of only steps and workouts. Continuous trends can reveal changes that an occasional measurement misses, but they also create more sensitive data and more opportunities for misinterpretation.
Software became the product
Readiness scores, sleep summaries, automated workout recognition and natural-language coaching attempted to turn streams of measurements into decisions. The important question is whether an algorithm improves a decision or merely describes an existing score in more persuasive language.
Ecosystems mattered as much as hardware
Rings, watches, phones, earbuds and health apps increasingly shared data. A product may technically work with several phones while offering its best functions only with one brand’s operating system or companion watch. “Works with” and “works best with” are different buying claims.
Health-care ambition increased
Consumer devices moved closer to medical use cases, but measurement, screening, notification, diagnosis and treatment remain distinct. A regulated feature does not make every feature on the same product a medical device.
Deloitte forecast nearly 440 million consumer health and medical wearables worldwide in 2024; that was a pre-year forecast, not an audited final shipment total (Deloitte). IDC forecast global smart-ring shipments rising from about 880,000 in 2023 to 1.7 million in 2024, while describing roughly 161 million smartwatch sales in 2023 and projecting 175 million by 2028. Rings were therefore fast-growing from a small base, not replacements for watches (IDC).
Why smart rings became the clearest category story
A ring is smaller, quieter and often easier to wear overnight than a watch. With no screen, GPS, cellular radio or notification stream, it can complement a traditional watch rather than compete with it. That makes it attractive for passive sleep and recovery tracking.
Oura established the ring-first model
Oura announced Oura Ring 4 on October 3, 2024, with sizes 4 through 15 and a redesigned sensing approach. Its U.S. membership page displayed $5.99 per month or $69.99 per year before tax when captured; plans and pricing are subject to change (Oura Ring 4 announcement; Oura membership page). Oura also states that battery results vary with ring size, settings, features, activity and battery age.
Samsung brought a major ecosystem into rings
Samsung announced Galaxy Ring on July 10, 2024. The company lists approximate weights of 2.3 to 3.0 grams depending on size and positioned it with Galaxy phones and watches for combined health insights and battery-management features (Samsung). Samsung’s strategy made the ring a companion to a Galaxy Watch, not a watch replacement.

|---|---|---|
| Best at | Discreet, passive and overnight tracking | Notifications, apps, safety, workouts and live interaction |
| Usually lacks | Display, GPS, cellular, speakers and broad apps | Less discreet overnight wear; more frequent charging for some users |
| Key fit issue | Exact finger sizing and stable skin contact | Wrist fit, movement and strap position |
| Economic risk | Subscription may unlock analysis and history | Cellular plans or ecosystem accessories may add cost |
Finger placement, fit, temperature, movement and charging habits affect ring readings. A ring can also duplicate sensors already on a watch. Evaluate whether its comfort and adherence solve a problem before paying for another data stream.
Smartwatches became health platforms
Apple Watch Series 10, announced September 9, 2024, illustrates the direction without representing the entire market. Apple highlighted sleep-apnea notifications, faster charging, water-depth and temperature sensing, and watchOS 11 health and fitness insights. Its U.S. launch price was $399. watchOS 11 supported Apple Watch Series 6 or later paired with an iPhone XS or later running iOS 18, with availability varying by device and region (Apple).

- Wheelchair mode tracks pushes — rather than steps — and includes push and handcycle activities with preloaded workouts for strength, cardio, HIIT, Pilates and yoga, challenges specific to wheelchair users and more (data presented is intended to be a close estimation of metrics tracked)
A notification about possible sleep-apnea patterns is not a diagnosis. Regulatory authorization and feature availability differ by country, and a manufacturer’s launch statement is not independent clinical validation. The same distinction applies to ECG-related functions, temperature trends, blood-oxygen estimates, fall detection and other safety features.
What “AI” actually did in wearables
Interpreting measurements
Energy or readiness scores, sleep summaries, stress and recovery interpretations and personalized coaching combine sensor data into a recommendation. Samsung described Galaxy AI features including Energy Score and recommendations based on combined health information (Samsung). Oura promoted Smart Sensing and redesigned software in its Ring 4 launch material (Oura).
Changing interaction
Voice assistants and natural-language questions let users ask about activity or trends without navigating charts. Processing may occur on the device, in the cloud or through a mixture of both; that choice affects latency, privacy and offline availability.
Perceiving the surroundings
Camera-equipped glasses can identify or describe objects, translate, answer questions about a scene and provide contextual assistance. Meta’s April 2024 update expanded Meta AI on Ray-Ban Meta glasses (Meta).
Where AI can mislead
- It may explain a validated measurement, or infer a pattern from correlations the user cannot inspect.
- Outputs may not be reproducible or may conceal uncertainty.
- Cloud processing can transmit intimate health, voice or image data.
- An AI-generated recommendation is not equivalent to professional medical advice.
Gartner forecast that 30% of smartwatches could have on-device AI by 2027, while only 30% of consumers would be prepared to provide specific health and wellness data for customized AI outcomes. These are forecasts, not measurements of 2024 adoption (Gartner).
Why smart glasses found a practical path before full AR
Most prominent 2024 consumer glasses were better understood as screenless camera-and-audio wearables than as augmented-reality displays. Ray-Ban Meta products combined conventional eyewear styling with cameras, microphones, open-ear speakers, calls, hands-free capture and AI. That lowered the social and technical barrier compared with a headset or transparent display.
The trade-offs are substantial: battery life, dependence on a paired phone or cloud service, and privacy around recording bystanders, children, workplaces and confidential meetings. Recording indicators may be ambiguous, and users need clear retention and sharing controls. A display-based AR product and an audio/camera AI product solve different problems.
Wearables entered health care cautiously
Continuous data could support remote patient monitoring, chronic-condition management, post-discharge follow-up, early alerts, engagement and longitudinal records. Deloitte identified sensor and AI progress as an opportunity while emphasizing clinician trust, secure data and interoperability (Deloitte).
The FDA maintains a list of medical devices incorporating sensor-based digital-health technology, including smartwatches, rings, patches and bands (FDA). Inclusion or clearance of one device or feature does not make an entire consumer product medical-grade.
What an organization must verify
- Clinical validation for the specific metric and intended population.
- Regulatory status and intended use in the relevant country.
- Interoperability with electronic health records.
- Alert thresholds, false-alert burden and escalation responsibility.
- Consent, ownership, cybersecurity, reimbursement and patient adherence.
The commercial model shifted from hardware to services
Manufacturers increasingly combine a device with memberships, coaching, historical reports, employer wellness programs or clinical monitoring. The meaningful comparison is total cost of ownership, not the checkout price.

For example, the Oura price displayed in the cited U.S. page would add $69.99 per year before tax, or $209.97 over three years, if that annual rate remained unchanged. It is a captured price signal, not a promise of current terms.
Accuracy is not one question
Sensor accuracy asks how closely a measurement matches a reference instrument. Algorithm performance asks whether software classifies or predicts correctly. Clinical utility asks whether the information improves decisions or outcomes. Adherence asks whether people wear the device consistently. Consumer usefulness asks whether the result is understandable and actionable.
- Wrist heart-rate readings can vary with movement, fit, skin contact and exercise intensity.
- Sleep-stage estimates are not laboratory polysomnography.
- Stress and recovery scores are commonly composite calculations, not direct measurements.
- Temperature trends are not the same as clinical temperature diagnosis.
- Blood-oxygen estimates can be affected by fit, movement, circulation, skin characteristics and environment.
- Ring data depends heavily on correct sizing and continuous wear.
Use language such as “may help identify patterns” or “provides an estimate” unless a specific regulated claim is being attributed to a manufacturer or regulator.
Privacy became part of the product’s value proposition
A wearable can continuously link identity with location, sleep, exercise, stress, menstrual-cycle information, voice and images. Data may move from the device to a phone, vendor cloud, analytics providers, health-care systems, insurers or employer programs.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →An earlier Deloitte survey found privacy concern among 40% of smartwatch and health-tracker users, rising to 60% among users subscribed to services producing health and fitness reports. Those figures are survey results, not a 2024 or 2026 population estimate (Deloitte).
Health information is not automatically covered by HIPAA simply because it comes from a wearable. Coverage depends on the organization and transaction. Before buying or deploying a device, check retention, deletion, export, cloud processing, model-training choices, account sharing and employer or insurer access.
How to evaluate a wearable in 2026 using lessons from 2024
For consumers
- Define the job. Choose notifications and safety, sleep and passive tracking, training load, hands-free AI or a prescribed clinical use.
- Check ecosystem fit. Confirm iPhone or Android requirements, companion apps, watch dependencies and data-export options.
- Separate measurements from scores. Ask which values are direct sensor readings and which are derived interpretations.
- Test comfort and adherence. Consider overnight wear, ring sizing, charging frequency, mobility, sensory needs and activity type.
- Calculate three-year cost. Add hardware, subscriptions, accessories, phone and cellular requirements.
- Audit privacy. Review retention, deletion, sharing, voice and camera permissions and cloud processing.
- Set medical expectations. Identify the exact intended use, authorization and follow-up process for any alert.
For health-care organizations
- Require evidence for the precise metric, population and workflow.
- Design escalation rules for missed, false and repeated alerts.
- Confirm EHR interoperability, consent and data ownership.
- Budget integration, reimbursement, cybersecurity and support.
For employers
- Make participation genuinely voluntary and allow opt-out without penalty.
- Keep individual health data away from managers unless a lawful, explicit process requires otherwise.
- Measure health outcomes rather than engagement alone.
- Require export and deletion at contract termination.
What 2024 did not solve
- More sensors did not guarantee better decisions or clinical outcomes.
- Smart rings did not replace smartwatch communication, navigation or apps.
- AI labels did not establish accuracy, transparency or medical validity.
- Screenless smart glasses did not constitute a mass-market AR breakthrough.
- Subscriptions and ecosystem lock-in made ownership more complex.
- Battery gaps, fragmented data, accessibility differences and privacy risks remained.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are smart rings replacing smartwatches?
No. 2024 evidence supports rapid ring growth from a small base. Rings are generally strongest for discreet passive and overnight tracking, while watches provide displays, notifications, apps, safety features and live interaction.
Is wearable data medical data?
It can be health-related without automatically receiving HIPAA protection or representing a regulated medical measurement. Protection depends on the entity and transaction, and regulatory status depends on the specific device feature and intended use.
Were 2024 smart glasses augmented reality?
Most consumer models were screenless camera-and-audio glasses with voice and AI features, not transparent-display AR systems.
