Short answer: a factory-style reset erases content and settings stored on the Apple Watch and returns it to setup. It does not automatically remove Activation Lock. For a sale, gift, trade-in, service visit, or transfer to another iPhone, use Unpair Apple Watch from the paired iPhone and authenticate with the associated Apple Account. That process erases the watch and removes Activation Lock.
“Reset” can mean five different things
Apple Watch owners use “reset” for several operations with very different consequences. Choose the least destructive option that solves the problem.

What an erase deletes—and what it does not
An erase removes the watch’s locally stored content and configuration, including:

- Apps and app data stored or synchronized on the watch.
- Photos, contacts, music, and other media stored on the watch.
- Personal settings and configured accounts or services, including iCloud, iMessage, FaceTime, and Game Center connections.
- Apple Pay cards added to the watch.
This does not mean your corresponding iCloud content is deleted. Erasing the watch is different from deleting information from iCloud, your iPhone, a third-party service, or a bank account. Apple documents the erased watch data and iCloud distinction at Apple Support.
Health and Fitness information
Do not assume a reset wipes Health, Fitness, Photos, or Contacts everywhere. Data synchronized to iCloud or otherwise stored outside the watch is not the same as the watch’s local copy. The exact information available after setup depends on your iPhone, account synchronization, backup, and each app’s own service.
Apple Pay
Cards on the watch are removed during an erase. This removes the watch’s local payment credentials; it does not establish that every Wallet or card-issuer action is completed automatically. Manage cards separately if your bank or Wallet requires it.
What happens to backups and setup
After erasure, the watch returns to an initial-setup state. During unpairing, the iPhone attempts to create a current Apple Watch backup. When you pair again, setup can offer restoration from an available backup or let you configure the watch as new. Apple provides a restoration path, not a guarantee that every app state, setting, or data item will return exactly as before. Apple’s backup and setup guidance is at Apple Support.
- Have the paired iPhone available where possible.
- Know the Apple Account password and watch passcode (unless using the forgotten-passcode route).
- Use a stable Bluetooth/Wi-Fi connection and sufficient battery.
- Keep the charger nearby, especially for a passcode reset.
Activation Lock is the ownership issue
Activation Lock can remain after a direct erase. It requires the Apple Account email address or phone number and password associated with the watch before another person can activate or pair it.
- Unpair from the paired iPhone: erases the watch and removes Activation Lock after authentication.
- Erase on the watch: erases content but may leave Activation Lock enabled.
- Forgotten-passcode reset: erases content but leaves Activation Lock enabled.
- Remote erase: removes data but does not by itself remove Activation Lock.
Activation Lock requirements are explained at Apple Support. A buyer should stop setup if the previous owner’s Apple Account is requested.

How to unpair and erase from the paired iPhone
Use this route for a sale, gift, trade-in, service appointment, or transfer to another iPhone.
- Keep the iPhone and watch close together.
- Open the Apple Watch app on the iPhone.
- Tap My Watch, then All Watches.
- Tap the information button beside the watch.
- Tap Unpair Apple Watch and confirm the watch name.
- For a GPS + Cellular model, choose whether to keep or remove the mobile plan.
- Enter the Apple Account password to disable Activation Lock.
- Wait for unpairing and erasure to finish.
The watch is erased, the iPhone attempts a backup, and the watch is ready for setup by you or its next owner. Apple’s current path is documented at Apple Support.

How to erase the watch without its iPhone
Use this when you are keeping the watch but cannot access the paired iPhone, or need to clear local data directly.
- Open Settings on the watch.
- Tap General, then Reset.
- Tap Erase All Content and Settings.
- Enter the passcode if requested.
- Choose whether to keep or remove the cellular plan.
- Confirm the erase.
This returns the watch to setup but does not reliably remove Activation Lock. The previously associated Apple Account may still be required. For a transfer to another person, use iPhone unpairing instead.
How to reset a forgotten passcode
Keep the watch on its charger throughout this process.
- Press and hold the side button until the power controls appear.
- Press and hold the Digital Crown until the erase screen appears.
- Tap Reset, then tap Reset again to confirm.
- Wait for erasure to complete, then set up the watch and restore from a backup if offered.
This removes the passcode by erasing the watch; it does not remove Activation Lock. If Erase Data is enabled, Apple says the watch erases after 10 failed passcode attempts. See the current instructions at Apple Support.

Cellular plans need a separate decision
For GPS + Cellular watches, choose Keep Plan only when you intend to pair the same watch with the same iPhone again. Choose Remove Plan when selling, giving away, servicing, pairing with another iPhone, or ending use of the watch.
Removing the watch’s plan may not cancel the carrier subscription. Carrier billing, cancellation, and transfer rules depend on the network and country; contact the carrier when the subscription itself must end. Apple’s guidance is at Apple Support.

Try a restart first
A restart is a non-destructive power cycle for a temporary freeze, sluggishness, or unresponsive app. It does not erase data or change ownership status.
Address storage before wiping
If an update fails because storage is full, remove unwanted media and apps first. Apple also documents unpairing and updating as a possible remedy when storage problems persist: Apple Support.
Recognize hardware faults
An erase cannot repair a failed display, degraded battery, water or impact damage, damaged Digital Crown or side button, charging failure, or a watch that cannot remain powered. Use Apple or an authorized service provider when the watch cannot respond, charge, or complete setup.
A reset also does not inherently install the latest watchOS version.

Remote erase and an already-transferred watch
If the watch is lost or no longer accessible, use Find My through iCloud.com to erase it. Remote erasure protects data but does not necessarily remove Activation Lock. The former owner must also remove the watch from the Apple Account before a new owner can activate it. Apple describes the account-removal process at Apple Support and Apple Support.
Seller and buyer checklists
Before selling, gifting, or trading in
- Confirm you know the Apple Account password.
- Allow the iPhone to complete the unpairing backup where possible.
- Use Unpair Apple Watch, not merely direct erasure.
- Choose the correct cellular-plan option.
- Wait until unpairing finishes and Activation Lock is removed.
When buying used
- Start setup before accepting the watch.
- Do not accept a watch that shows the previous owner’s passcode screen.
- Stop if setup asks for the previous owner’s Apple Account.
- Ask the seller to complete account removal before payment or handover.

Does resetting delete Health data?
It erases content stored on the watch, but it does not automatically delete corresponding iCloud content. What returns depends on synchronization, backup availability, and the individual app or service.
Can I restore an Apple Watch after resetting it?
Yes. During setup, Apple may offer restoration from an available backup. Restoration is not a promise that every setting or app state will be identical.
Do I need my Apple Account password?
You need it to remove Activation Lock during iPhone unpairing and may need it to activate a watch erased by another route.
Does resetting improve battery life?
Only if a software or configuration problem is causing unusual drain; a reset cannot reverse battery aging or hardware damage.

Yes. Use Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings, but direct erasure may leave Activation Lock enabled.
How do I know a used Apple Watch is ready to activate?
Setup should not request the previous owner’s passcode or Apple Account. If it does, the seller must remove the watch from their account.
