The Derek Pratt Remontoir d’Égalité is a hand-wound wristwatch based on a project begun by the English watchmaker Derek Pratt, then completed and substantially redesigned after his death by Luca Soprana. Its defining feature is a visible one-second remontoir: a small spring mechanism that periodically refreshes the force reaching the escapement and directly drives a sharply stepping seconds hand. The first seven-watch series, made for Perpétuel Gallery, was reported sold out in February 2024; Atelier SMA now describes a separate, continuing small annual production available by enquiry.
What is the Derek Pratt Remontoir d’Égalité?
The DP07 is a manually wound mechanical wristwatch whose architecture puts a remontoir d’égalité—the “equalizing” mechanism—at the centre of both its timekeeping concept and its appearance. The mechanism releases stored spring force to the escapement in regular intervals, rather than allowing the escapement to receive the barrels’ continuously changing torque directly. In this watch, the remontoir also powers the deadbeat seconds display, so the seconds hand advances in distinct one-second steps.
The name reflects an important distinction in authorship. The project began with Pratt, but he did not complete this wristwatch: he died in 2009, and Soprana later redesigned its movement and produced the finished DP07 with the Pratt family’s blessing. How did Pratt’s project become Soprana’s finished watch?
Pratt’s concept and Lesemann’s development work
Pratt (1938–2009) was technical director at Urban Jürgensen from 1982 to 2005 and was known for work involving remontoirs and tourbillons. The DP07 idea took shape in late 2008. Pratt approached Stewart Lesemann, who began developing the wristwatch under Pratt’s mentorship in early 2009. Lesemann presented an initial prototype before Pratt died, continued the work, and showed a third prototype at the 2011 Derek Pratt Memorial Seminar.

Soprana’s redesign and production
In 2014, independent watchmaker Luca Soprana took over the project. He redesigned the movement and brought the DP07 to completion with the Pratt family’s blessing. Monochrome notes that the movement plate carries the inscription “Derek Pratt Invenit,” a tribute to the signature “Derek Pratt, Invenit et Fecit” associated with Pratt’s own work; it should not be read as evidence that Pratt made the finished watch. How does its Reuleaux-triangle remontoir work?
The twin suspended barrels supply energy to a one-second remontoir positioned coaxially with the escape wheel. Instead of passing the barrels’ varying force straight to the escapement, the remontoir’s small spring is wound and released in a repeating cycle. Each release supplies a fresh, controlled impulse. The cycle helps isolate the escapement from fluctuations in the barrels’ torque; it does not, by itself, establish a measured accuracy result for the watch.

The cam, spring and one-second cycle
A ruby cam shaped as a Reuleaux triangle works with a spring and fork to control the cycle. As the mechanism turns, the cam’s changing profile interacts with the fork, regulating the spring’s release and rearming. In accessible terms, the barrels wind the remontoir spring; the cam-and-fork arrangement meters its release; and the mechanism resets for another release after one second. The remontoir pinion drives the deadbeat seconds hand directly, making the mechanism’s one-second rhythm visible on the dial.
A Maltese-cross stopwork limits the movement’s running reserve to 36 hours. The stated purpose is to keep the barrels operating within a range that continues to supply adequate force, rather than to let them run down until their torque becomes unsuitable.

Monochrome’s 2024 article describes the salmon-dial steel watch. Is the Luca Soprana Derek Pratt watch still available?
The original Perpétuel Gallery release and Atelier SMA’s current production are distinct contexts. Monochrome reported in February 2024 that the seven-watch Perpétuel Gallery series had sold out. The same article gave an approximate price of CHF 100,000 for that original release; that is a historical report, not a current asking price.

What does the 2024 auction record tell buyers?
Phillips recorded a price of CHF 127,000 in 2024 for a numbered DP07 prototype, no. 00, at The Geneva Watch Auction: XX. This is a single historical auction result for that prototype. What makes this DP07 distinctive?
Its interest lies in how the regulating idea is exposed and made legible. The visible remontoir is not simply decorative: its one-second release cycle is tied directly to the watch’s deadbeat seconds display. The Reuleaux-triangle ruby cam gives the mechanism a distinctive visual signature, while the twin barrels, spring-and-fork action, and stopwork form part of the movement’s functional architecture. Soprana’s finished watch therefore joins a posthumous continuation of Pratt’s project with a movement design and execution completed by Soprana.
