Short answer: Apple is widely expected to announce an Apple Watch Ultra 4 in September 2026, but Apple has not confirmed it. An Apple Watch SE 4 is much less certain and may not arrive this year. The current Ultra 3 and SE 3 remain supported by watchOS 27, so neither is facing immediate software obsolescence. If you need an Ultra, waiting is sensible; if you need an affordable Apple Watch now, the SE 3 remains the safer buy.
The current Apple Watch lineup
Apple announced the Apple Watch Ultra 3 and Apple Watch SE 3 on September 9, 2025, with both becoming available on September 19, 2025. In the United States, the Ultra 3 starts at $799 and the SE 3 at $249. Apple’s January 2026 lineup overview places the Series 11 between them at a $399 U.S. starting price. Prices vary by country, case, cellular configuration, tax and promotions.
| Model | U.S. starting price | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Watch SE 3 | $249 | First-time buyers, families and basic fitness |
| Apple Watch Series 11 | $399 | Users wanting a middle ground |
| Apple Watch Ultra 3 | $799 | Outdoor athletes, travelers and long battery life |

Apple Watch Ultra 4: what is actually expected
Reporting attributed to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman says Apple is preparing an Ultra 4 for September 2026 alongside Apple Watch Series 12, with multiple new watch models reportedly in late-stage testing. This remains a reported expectation, not an Apple-confirmed date or product.
| Possible change | Confidence | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| September 2026 launch | Medium-high | Widely reported, but unconfirmed by Apple |
| Newer or faster chip | Medium | Likely product-cycle improvement |
| Health and fitness improvements | Medium | Reported focus, with specifications unknown |
| Major redesign | Low and contested | One report suggests a full redesign; other reporting says no major overhaul |
| Touch ID or another biometric system | Low | Speculation only |
| Noninvasive blood-glucose monitoring | Very low for Ultra 4 | Described as a longer-term Apple project, not an expected 2026 feature |

Apple Watch SE 3: why it remains relevant
The SE 3 uses Apple’s S10 chip and adds an Always-On display, fast charging, 5G cellular capability, wrist-temperature sensing, Sleep Score, retrospective ovulation estimates, sleep-apnea notifications, Double Tap and wrist-flick gestures, on-device Siri and more durable cover glass. It starts at $249 in the United States.
The SE 3 is an affordable entry point, not a cheaper Ultra. It does not provide the Ultra’s satellite communications, Ultra-level battery endurance, rugged titanium and display package, or complete flagship outdoor and health feature set. See Apple’s SE 3 announcement for model-specific availability.

Apple Watch SE 4: an uncertain timetable
There is no Apple announcement confirming an SE 4, and current 2026 reporting says Apple does not necessarily update the SE and Ultra lines annually. The roadmap is substantially clearer for Series 12 and Ultra 4 than for a new SE, so do not treat an SE 4 as a September certainty. MacRumors’ 2026 guide makes the distinction explicit.
What Apple could improve
If an SE 4 appears, a newer chip, longer battery life, additional health sensors, better durability, new materials or colors, and a longer support runway would be logical areas to examine. These are product-line possibilities, not verified specifications. A meaningful SE 4 should offer more than a minor processor refresh; a substantial battery or health upgrade would matter most.

watchOS 27 and software longevity
Apple’s official watchOS 27 compatibility list includes Apple Watch SE 3, Series 9, Series 10, Series 11, Ultra 2 and Ultra 3. Installation requires an iPhone 11 or later, or iPhone SE (second generation or later), running iOS 27. Compatibility does not mean every feature works on every model: Apple varies features by hardware, language, region and paired iPhone.
watchOS 27 drops support for the original Ultra, Series 8 and SE 2. Early coverage incorrectly omitted Series 9, but Apple subsequently confirmed Series 9 support; use Apple’s official list rather than outdated summaries. Secondary context is available from MacRumors’ compatibility report and its correction.

Should you buy now or wait?
Buying an Ultra
- Wait: If your purchase can wait until the expected September 2026 event, waiting protects you against buying immediately before a new chip, sensors or design revision.
- Buy Ultra 3: If you need satellite safety, 5G, the longest Apple Watch battery life or rugged outdoor capability now. A substantial discount could make it the better value even after Ultra 4 launches.
Already own an Ultra 3
There is no software-driven urgency to upgrade: Ultra 3 is compatible with watchOS 27. Consider Ultra 4 only for a demonstrable hardware improvement, not simply because a new model exists.
Buying an SE
- Buy SE 3: If you want the lowest-cost current Apple Watch, an Always-On display, S10 performance and watchOS 27 support now.
- Wait cautiously: If you are not in a hurry and specifically want newer health features or battery improvements. There is no reliable promise that an SE 4 will launch in 2026.
Replacing an older watch
If you own an original Ultra, Series 8 or SE 2, watchOS 27 compatibility is a practical reason to consider upgrading. Check your iPhone as well: an unsupported iPhone can require a phone upgrade before the watch is usable.
Costs and limitations to check
- GPS-only and GPS + Cellular models have different prices.
- Cellular service requires a compatible carrier plan and recurring charges; Apple’s comparison page explains the requirement: Apple Watch comparison.
- Satellite services and health features vary by region, regulation, age, language and hardware.
- Hypertension, sleep-apnea and related functions are screening or wellness tools, not medical diagnoses.
- Family Setup or Apple Watch For Your Kids has additional iPhone, region and carrier requirements.
Alternatives while you wait
The Series 11 is the natural Apple alternative when the SE 3 lacks health features you want but the Ultra 3’s satellite and outdoor hardware is unnecessary. Garmin can offer longer battery life and deep training tools but integrates less completely with iPhone. Samsung Galaxy Watch and Google Pixel Watch are primarily Android choices, while Fitbit is more fitness-focused and not a full replacement for Apple Watch communications. Compare current availability and service terms before switching ecosystems.
Verdict
For an Ultra buyer, wait for the expected Ultra 4 announcement if you can; buy Ultra 3 now only for immediate outdoor needs or a meaningful discount. For an SE buyer, the SE 3 is the dependable value choice at $249, while waiting for an SE 4 is a bet on an uncertain timetable. Existing Ultra 3 and SE 3 owners can keep using their watches without urgent upgrade pressure based on watchOS support alone.
