Wireless Contact Lens Displays Are Real—but Still Prototypes

Wireless contact-lens displays exist as research and exhibition prototypes, but the cited evidence does not establish a consumer product for sale. See what the display, power and sensing demonstrations actually show.

Wireless contact-lens displays have been demonstrated in laboratory and exhibition prototypes, but the available evidence does not establish a regulated consumer product for sale. The demonstrations show different pieces of the idea: a tiny LED display powered over a short-range RFID link, company prototypes with a microdisplay and wireless-power companion, and a separate battery-free lens that senses eye movements.

What “wireless contact lens display” means today

A wireless lens can describe several distinct functions: receiving power without a wire, exchanging data wirelessly, sensing eye activity, or displaying visual content. Demonstrating one does not prove the others. In particular, a battery-free eye-tracking lens is not itself an image-displaying lens, and a display prototype is not evidence that a finished product is available or approved for consumer use.

The demonstrations described here remain at research or prototype stage. Their published details also differ: one peer-reviewed paper reports specific power measurements, while company announcements describe exhibition prototypes and company claims.

Display prototypes and what they demonstrate

Demonstration What it does Power or range reported What the evidence establishes
Tsai and colleagues, 2024, IEEJ/Wiley A HEMA smart contact lens packages a 3×3 mini-LED array, micro-antenna and driver/transmission chip. The package target was under 200 μm. A 920 MHz RFID reader 2 cm away delivered 100 μW. After conversion to 3 V, about 30 μA drove the LEDs; commands were sent through the RFID protocol. A small display and wireless power/data link demonstrated in a research design. Resolution beyond the 3×3 array and consumer readiness are not stated in the paper details summarized here.
XPANCEO, MWC 2025 The company showed prototype concepts including an AR-vision lens with an integrated microdisplay and a data-reading lens communicating with a companion device. XPANCEO claimed its wireless-power companion provided twice the range of previous industry solutions; an absolute distance or delivered power is not stated. Company-reported exhibition demonstrations, not proof of a retail product. The companion device was described as charger and computing hub.

The 3×3 mini-LED RFID demonstration

Tsai and colleagues’ 2024 paper, The Heterogeneous Packaging of A 3 × 3 Mini-LED Array for Smart Contact Lens Display Applications, describes a HEMA lens integrating the LEDs with a micro-antenna and driver/transmission chip. Its reported 100 μW was received when the RFID reader antenna was 2 cm from the lens. That is a measured condition for this prototype, not a general wireless-lens power or operating-range figure.

(Auxiliary route guidance, prioritizing safe observation of the real-world environment.)

The demonstration shows that a nearby reader can deliver enough energy for a very small LED array in the reported setup. A 3×3 array is not equivalent to a high-resolution screen, and the cited paper details do not establish a consumer-ready image display.

XPANCEO’s exhibition prototypes

At Mobile World Congress 2025, XPANCEO announced a wireless-power companion and prototype lenses, including an AR-vision concept with an integrated microdisplay. The company said the new system had twice the range of previous industry solutions, but the announcement does not give an absolute range in the information available here. Its separate data-reading lens sent information wirelessly to a companion that served as a charger and computing hub.

These distinctions matter: an integrated microdisplay is different from receiving externally generated images, and a companion device can supply power or computation without making the lens fully self-contained. XPANCEO presented these as prototypes and exhibition demonstrations; that status does not establish consumer availability.

How wireless contact lenses get power

RFID or near-field power from a nearby reader

In the 2024 mini-LED study, the RFID reader was 2 cm away and delivered 100 μW to the lens’s receiving chip. The lens converted that input to 3 V, with about 30 μA driving the LEDs. This is a very small power budget, and the short reported distance is part of the result: wireless does not mean the lens can draw power from anywhere or operate independently of nearby equipment.

A companion device

XPANCEO described a portable companion that wirelessly powered its prototype and acted as a charger and computing hub for a data-reading lens. The company’s “twice the range” statement is relative to what it called previous industry solutions; the announcement information summarized here does not specify the comparison distance or delivered power.

Battery-free sensing is a different capability

A 2024 Nature Communications study reported a chip-free, battery-free contact lens using four passive RF tags to track eye activity. It demonstrates that wireless sensing and interaction can be achieved without an on-lens battery in that design. It does not show that an image display can run battery-free under the same conditions.

What wireless sensing research has shown

Zhu and colleagues’ 2024 Nature Communications study reported angular accuracy below 0.5°, eye-closure detection, and software and robot-control demonstrations. The authors also reported low cytotoxicity and eye irritation in tests that included rabbits. Those results concern the study’s sensing lens and test conditions, not a consumer display product or proof of human safety for long-term wear.

The U.S. Army awarded Nielson Scientific a 2024 SBIR Phase I project proposing binocular eye tracking, pupil-size and blink monitoring, integration with a head-mounted display, and more than eight hours of operation. That figure was a proposed battery-operation target for development, with prototype fabrication and testing planned—not a verified runtime result for a product.

Can you buy an AR contact lens?

The cited evidence does not document a consumer product listing or regulated contact-lens display for sale. XPANCEO’s 2025 prototypes were exhibition demonstrations, and the academic studies describe research systems. Do not treat a prototype announcement, a paper demonstrating wireless sensing, or ordinary contact lenses as evidence that an AR display lens is available to purchase.

For a future product, useful questions include whether its display resolution and field of view are specified; how far away its power source can be and how much power reaches the lens; whether computation happens on the lens or a companion; and what is known about thickness, flexibility, oxygen transmission, comfort, biocompatibility, and human testing. The testing stage—bench, animal, or human—should be clear, and company claims should be distinguished from peer-reviewed measurements.
