Seiko revived the collection in 2022. Today’s KSK and VANAC models revisit historic designs with contemporary mechanical movements; the future is clear only as far as Seiko’s announced releases.
King Seiko’s beginnings in 1961
Seiko dates the first King Seiko to 1961. It was manually wound and had 25 jewels, placing the collection in the company’s high-end mechanical-watch offering. Seiko’s historical account gives its launch-era price as ¥12,000–¥15,000, a range it says was around the average starting salary of a university graduate at the time. That is a period comparison, not a modern currency equivalent.

The 1965 KSK established the signature look
The second-generation King Seiko, known as the KSK, arrived in 1965. Seiko identifies its hacking seconds hand as a notable technical feature, while its larger lugs, sharper case contours and wider, textured 12 o’clock index helped define the collection’s visual identity. Those angular details are the clearest bridge between the historic watch and the KSK models in the current collection.

VANAC brought a different character in 1972
Seiko dates the original VANAC to 1972. Its bright colors and multifaceted design were a more adventurous expression of King Seiko than the KSK’s restrained, sharply defined style. VANAC therefore gives the collection a second historical design thread: not just angular dress-watch cues, but a bolder, sportier look.

Production ended during the shift to quartz
King Seiko production ended in the 1970s. Seiko cites the arrival of quartz watches among the factors behind the discontinuation; it does not reduce the change to a single cause. The line’s long absence means today’s collection is a revival of a historic name and design language, rather than an uninterrupted product range.

The 2022 revival and the present collection
After more than 50 years away, King Seiko returned in 2022. The modern collection draws on historic styling while using contemporary mechanical watchmaking. Seiko’s current US lineup includes two distinct series: KSK, with its direct connection to the 1965 design, and VANAC, with the more expressive character established in 1972.
These are different design directions within one collection, not evidence that one series is inherently better quality or value. Compare individual references rather than relying on the family name alone: movements, dimensions, water resistance and other specifications are model-specific. The future can be described through announced models, not predictions. In 2025, Seiko announced a new sporty VANAC design inspired by the original series and framed around Tokyo’s horizon. On May 19, 2026, it announced a limited silver-white and blue VANAC for the company’s 145th anniversary. These releases show VANAC continuing as part of the revived collection, but they do not establish what Seiko will introduce beyond the announcements.

What to compare when choosing a King Seiko
- Design lineage: Choose KSK if the angular 1965 design is the draw; consider VANAC for the colorful, multifaceted line that began in 1972.
- Visual character: Decide whether you prefer the KSK’s sharper, more restrained appearance or VANAC’s sportier expression.
- Reference-level specifications: Check the movement, case dimensions, water resistance and other technical details on the exact model page. Do not assume specifications carry across a series.
- Local price and availability: Listings vary by market and reference. Confirm current details with Seiko or a local retailer rather than treating US prices as universal.
