The time-only members of Tissot’s Heritage 1938 line are the watches to look for when you want the collection’s late-1930s character without a calendar window. Tissot’s own catalogue identifies a “TISSOT SMALL SECOND 1938 COSC” category, but Tissot’s catalogue does not establish a complete, current reference-number list. That distinction matters: related Heritage 1938 watches with date displays are not time-only models.
What “time-only” means in Heritage 1938
In this context, time-only means the dial is intended to show the time—hours, minutes and seconds—without a date indication. The small-seconds version places the seconds display in a separate sub-dial, rather than using a central seconds hand. Tissot’s user-manual catalogue names the relevant family “TISSOT SMALL SECOND 1938 COSC.” It also lists “TISSOT AUTOMATIC GENT 1938 COSC,” so the catalogue recognizes more than one Heritage 1938 naming category, but it does not by itself prove every current time-only SKU or its regional availability.
How the collection is positioned
Tissot describes Heritage 1938 as a revival of late-1930s aesthetics. In the brand’s words, the collection “resonates with individuals — both men and women — who have a fondness for watchmaking history and value craftsmanship.” That is a statement of design intent, not proof that any one watch is an exact recreation of a particular historical reference.
At collection level, Tissot describes 39 mm 316L stainless-steel cases, sapphire crystals, water resistance of up to 50 m, automatic movements, COSC certification and see-through casebacks. The brand also describes bâton hands, leather straps and interchangeable quick-release bracelets across the collection. These are collection-wide claims; the exact time-only reference should be checked before treating any one specification as definitive.

Do not confuse the small-seconds watches with date models
The closest-looking Heritage 1938 watches may have a calendar display. Tissot’s US page for reference T142.464.16.062.00 describes a 39 mm model with an anthracite dial and lists “Date” among its main functions. Reference T142.464.16.332.00 likewise lists a date function and has a pink dial. Both are useful examples of adjacent Heritage 1938 variants, but neither should be presented as a time-only Small Second model.
When a retailer’s photograph is ambiguous, inspect the dial specification and the functions field rather than relying on the collection name alone. A date aperture—however discreet—changes the watch from the no-date configuration you may be seeking.

How to verify a time-only watch before buying
- Record the full reference. Do not rely on “Heritage 1938” alone; ask the seller for the complete Tissot reference printed on the listing or warranty documentation.
- Confirm the functions. The specification should describe hours, minutes and seconds (or small seconds) and should not list a date.
- Match the photographs to the specification. Check for a separate seconds sub-dial and the absence of a date window. Product images can be reused across variants.
- Verify technical details on Tissot’s page for that reference. Confirm case dimensions, calibre, power reserve, water resistance, crystal, caseback and COSC wording rather than assuming the collection-level description applies identically.
- Check what is in the box. Confirm the supplied strap or bracelet, quick-release compatibility and warranty coverage in your market.
- Check date and region. Price, stock and warranty can change by country and over time; obtain them from the local Tissot site or an authorized seller before payment.
Who the time-only version suits
A Small Second COSC model is the focused choice for someone who values a restrained dial and historical styling over calendar utility. The separate seconds display gives the watch a traditional, instrument-like layout, while the 39 mm case described for the collection keeps the format contemporary rather than oversized. If you need a date at a glance, the adjacent date references are the relevant branch of the family, not substitutes for the no-date models.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. The practical verdict
Tissot clearly identifies a Heritage 1938 Small Second COSC family and frames the collection around late-1930s design, automatic COSC movements and traditional materials. Tissot’s cited material does not establish a complete time-only reference list or a reliable reference-by-reference comparison of dials, calibres, prices and included straps. Treat “Small Second 1938 COSC” as the starting category, then verify the exact SKU and its local specification before purchase.
