A watch crystal is the transparent cover over the dial—not the quartz oscillator inside a quartz movement. The three materials you will encounter most often are acrylic (PMMA, Plexiglass or, in some brand contexts, Hesalite), mineral glass and synthetic sapphire. Acrylic is easiest to restore after light scratching and handles impacts well; mineral glass is a cost-conscious middle ground; sapphire best resists everyday abrasion but can chip or fracture in a hard impact.
What “watch crystal” means
In watch terminology, the crystal is the clear component protecting the dial and hands. It may be flat, domed, boxed or otherwise profiled, and it can be held by a bezel, case shoulder, gasket or retaining system. This is separate from the quartz crystal oscillator used to regulate a quartz movement.
Material is only one part of performance. Edge exposure, crystal shape, case support, bezel protection and surface coatings can change how a watch behaves in actual use.
A short history of watch crystals
Early pocket watches used natural rock crystal, a form of quartz. The name remained even as watchmakers adopted manufactured transparent materials.

A specialist historical account describes synthetic corundum production by the Verneuil method beginning in the late nineteenth century. It dates PMMA (polymethyl methacrylate) development to 1928 and commercial introduction to about five years later. Acrylic became widely used in watches during the twentieth century, including wartime watches where its flexibility and resistance to shattering were useful.
The same account says the earliest attested watch use of sapphire appears to be associated with Jaeger-LeCoultre in the late 1920s or early 1930s, while synthetic sapphire did not become common until the early 1970s. That chronology comes from a secondary specialist source, so it should be treated as an account of the early history rather than a universally settled first-use claim.
Acrylic dominated many mid-century watches and remains popular in vintage-inspired designs. Modern examples include Timex Marlin and Q Timex collections.

How the three common materials compare
| Material | Advantages | Disadvantages | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Acrylic / PMMA | Light, flexible and relatively resistant to shattering; fine scratches can often be polished out; provides a warm, vintage-style profile. | Scratches readily; deep marks, crazing, clouding and age-related deterioration may require replacement. | Vintage character, easy surface restoration and situations where impact tolerance matters. |
| Mineral glass / hardened mineral | More scratch resistant than acrylic and usually less expensive than sapphire; hardened versions may use proprietary treatments such as Hardlex. | Still susceptible to scratches; deep marks are difficult to polish reliably; a strong impact can crack it. | Buyers seeking a practical middle ground between price and scratch resistance. |
| Synthetic sapphire | Very strong resistance to ordinary abrasion and a crisp appearance; useful when keeping the visible surface scratch-free is a priority. | Costs more; a sufficiently hard impact can chip or fracture it, particularly at an exposed edge; reflections may require anti-reflective treatment. | Frequent wear where abrasion resistance justifies higher purchase or replacement cost. |
These are general tendencies, not guarantees. A domed acrylic crystal and a flat acrylic crystal can experience different stresses, just as a sapphire edge protected by a substantial bezel differs from an exposed sapphire edge. An anti-reflective coating can also be the part that becomes marked even when the underlying crystal is sapphire.
Scratch resistance and impact resistance are different
Acrylic: forgiving after an accident
Acrylic is comparatively soft, so contact with metal, grit or other hard objects can leave visible marks. Its advantage is toughness and flexibility: it is less likely than a brittle material to shatter from an ordinary blow. Light scratches can often be removed with a plastic polish made for acrylic watch crystals. This makes routine cosmetic restoration relatively accessible.
Mineral glass: the compromise
Mineral glass generally resists scratching better than acrylic but does not match sapphire. It can crack when struck, and polishing a deep scratch is not a straightforward home repair. In ordinary service, a badly marked or cracked mineral crystal is usually replaced.

Sapphire: hard surface, vulnerable edges
Synthetic sapphire stands up well to everyday abrasion, which is why it is favored for watches worn frequently. Hard impact remains a different problem: chips and fractures are possible, especially where the edge is exposed or poorly supported. A damaged anti-reflective coating can affect legibility even if the sapphire below remains intact.
How to choose a crystal for your watch
1. Start with your dominant risk
- Frequent abrasion: sapphire is the strongest general choice if the added cost is acceptable.
- Regular knocks or rough activity: consider acrylic or a construction with strong bezel and edge protection; no material is impact-proof.
- Mixed everyday use: mineral glass can provide a sensible balance when sapphire pricing is not justified.
2. Consider repair and replacement
Acrylic’s polishability can reduce the need for replacement after fine scratches. Deep acrylic damage, crazing or clouding still calls for a new crystal. Mineral and sapphire scratches normally lead to replacement in routine repair practice, and sapphire parts and labor are generally more expensive.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3. Decide how much appearance matters
Acrylic often gives vintage watches a softer, warmer look and can be noticeably domed. Sapphire tends to appear crisp and modern, while mineral glass sits between those visual extremes. Anti-reflective coatings can improve legibility but add another surface that may be marked or require careful handling.

4. Inspect the watch’s construction
Check whether the bezel shields the crystal edge, how far the crystal rises above the case, and whether the design uses a flat, domed or boxed profile. The same material can perform differently depending on these details. Matching the original profile also matters for the watch’s appearance and hand clearance.
5. Do not infer water resistance from the material
Crystal material alone does not establish water resistance. Correct dimensions, profile, gasket, retaining system and installation are all necessary. After crystal work, a watch expected to remain water resistant should be pressure tested by a qualified service provider.

Polishing acrylic
For fine acrylic scratches, use a plastic polish specifically intended for acrylic watch crystals, following its instructions. This advice is material-specific: do not transfer it to mineral glass or sapphire.
Why home polishing is risky on mineral and sapphire
Mineral and sapphire surfaces—especially coated ones—should not be treated with abrasive home compounds. Polishing can leave an uneven surface or remove an anti-reflective coating, creating a larger optical problem than the original mark.
When replacement is the right repair
- Replace acrylic when damage is deep, widespread, crazed, cloudy or caused by age-related deterioration.
- Replace mineral glass when it is cracked or badly scratched rather than attempting an unreliable polish.
- Replace sapphire when it is chipped, fractured or its coating is damaged beyond acceptable cosmetic repair.
A replacement must match the exact diameter, thickness and profile and must work with the watch’s retaining and sealing system. Installing a new crystal does not by itself restore water resistance; proper fitting and testing are required.
Checking what a watch uses
Manufacturers do not always use “glass” consistently in marketing. Look for the crystal specification in the technical details and confirm whether “mineral,” a hardened proprietary mineral name such as Hardlex, acrylic, Hesalite or sapphire is stated. Timex’s general guidance is: “The type of watch crystal can be found under ‘Specs’ on each product page.” If a listing is silent, ask the manufacturer or an authorized retailer rather than assuming the material from the price or appearance.

A practical decision checklist
- Will abrasion or impact be the more common hazard?
- Is a vintage-domed appearance part of the watch’s appeal?
- Would you rather polish light marks or minimize the chance of marks appearing?
- Is the likely replacement cost acceptable if the crystal is damaged?
- Does the bezel protect the edge, and is the crystal profile correct for the case?
- Will the watch be serviced and pressure tested after crystal work?
Choose the material that fits those answers rather than treating one option as universally superior. Acrylic, mineral glass and sapphire each represent a different balance of abrasion resistance, impact behavior, appearance, repairability and cost.
