Most analog watches use an hour hand, a minute hand and—when fitted—a seconds hand. The hands themselves come in recognizable forms such as baton, dauphine, feuille (leaf), sword, spade, pear and skeleton. This guide explains what those names mean, how hand arrangements work and what to check when identifying or replacing a set.
What a watch hand is
Fondation Haute Horlogerie defines a hand as “a variously shaped indicator made from a thin piece of lightweight metal and which moves round a dial, with or without graduations.” In practical terms, it is the pointer that translates a movement’s rotation into a reading on the dial. Shape, finish, lume and length all affect how clearly that reading can be made.
The familiar three-hand display is not universal. Early watches had only an hour hand, and modern watches may place seconds on a separate subdial or omit a seconds hand altogether. NOMOS Glashütte, for example, calls some models without a seconds hand “Duo”; that is a NOMOS model designation, not a universal horological term.
The basic hand arrangement
Hour and minute hands
The short hour hand completes one circuit roughly every 12 hours. The longer minute hand completes one circuit every hour. Their relative length and position are usually the quickest way to distinguish them, although individual designs vary.

Central seconds
A central (or sweep) seconds hand shares the dial’s center and makes one revolution per minute. Service literature commonly separates hour/minute hands from seconds and sweep-seconds hands, showing that function is classified alongside shape. The dated Elgin service chart hosted by the American Watchmakers-Clockmakers Institute illustrates this approach: Illustrated Hand Style Chart.
Subdial seconds
A subsidiary-seconds hand runs on a small subdial, often at six or nine o’clock, rather than from the central pinion. It still indicates seconds, but its position and usually shorter length make it a separate visual element.

A practical glossary of common hand shapes
Names are descriptive rather than a single globally enforced standard. The lists in Fondation Haute Horlogerie’s hand encyclopedia and NOMOS Glashütte’s glossary overlap but are not identical. Use the following as a recognition guide, not an exhaustive taxonomy.
| Hand name | What to look for | Related wording or note |
|---|---|---|
| Baton | A straight, bar-like hand with parallel sides. | Also called stick; NOMOS gives “obélisque” as an alternate term. |
| Dauphine | A faceted, diamond-like or triangular hand, often tapering to a point. | NOMOS describes it as diamond-shaped. |
| Feuille (leaf) | A curved, leaf-shaped hand that widens through the middle and narrows toward the tip. | “Feuille” is the French term commonly used in parts catalogues and watch descriptions. |
| Sword | A long, narrow, blade-like hand with a pointed or sharply tapered end. | NOMOS uses “lancet” for a sword-shaped form. |
| Spade | A hand whose end broadens into a spade-like point or paddle. | Included in FHH’s list; exact proportions differ by maker. |
| Poire (pear) | A pear-shaped thickening, typically toward the tip, narrowing back toward the pinion. | NOMOS specifically notes a pear-shaped thickening at the minute-hand tip. |
| Breguet or moon | A slender hand with a circular or crescent-like opening near its tip. | FHH lists “Breguet or Moon”; usage of the two labels can vary. |
| Skeleton | An openworked hand with material removed, leaving a frame or outline. | The opening can reduce visual mass while preserving a defined pointer. |
Why the names vary
Hand terminology borrows from several vocabularies. Patek Philippe Magazine’s Nicholas Foulkes describes names drawn from weaponry (sword, arrow and lance), botany (apple, pear and leaf), French monarchy (Louis XV and Louis XVI), automobiles (Mercedes), ecclesiastical architecture (cathedral) and weather (snowflake). That polyglot history explains why two makers may use different labels for similar silhouettes, or reserve one name for a particular proportion or finishing treatment. See “A Show of Hands” in Patek Philippe Magazine.

How to identify the hands on your watch
- Separate function from shape. Decide whether you are looking at the hour, minute, central-seconds or subdial-seconds hand.
- Trace the outline. Is it a straight bar (baton), a faceted diamond (dauphine), a leaf, a blade (sword/lancet), a spade, a pear or an open frame (skeleton)?
- Check the tip and openings. A circular opening suggests the Breguet/moon family; a broad pointed end may indicate spade; a rounded thickening may indicate poire.
- Look for construction details. Facets, polished and brushed surfaces, applied markers and luminous inserts can make the same basic silhouette appear different.
- Compare the set as a whole. Hour, minute and seconds hands are normally designed as a coordinated set, but a small seconds hand may intentionally use a different length or shape.
Legibility is a visual judgment rather than a fixed performance rating. Contrast between the hand and dial, the width of the pointer, reflections from polished facets and the presence of luminous material all affect how easily the time can be read.
Hands in service and historical records
Watchmakers classify hands by both what they do and how they look. The Elgin chart separates hour/minute, seconds and sweep-seconds hands, then illustrates styles such as baton, dauphine, arrow and spade-whip. It is valuable period service documentation, but it is a dated chart rather than a current universal naming standard.

Replacing or buying watch hands
Replacement hands are sold as complete box sets or individually. The Cousins UK 2018 non-branded catalogue groups products by hour/minute, centre-seconds and subsidiary or chronograph-seconds applications, and lists styles including baton, dauphine and luminous.
Check compatibility before ordering
- Movement: Confirm the exact calibre and whether it uses central or subsidiary seconds.
- Hand dimensions: Verify the hole diameters for each pinion and the hand lengths relative to the dial. A style name alone does not establish a fit.
- Stack and clearance: The hands must clear one another, the dial furniture and the crystal through a full 12-hour cycle.
- Construction and lume: Match finish, color and luminous treatment if you are preserving the original appearance.
- Installation: Pressing hands onto the wrong pinion or at the wrong height can damage the movement or cause rubbing; use a qualified watchmaker when measurements are uncertain.
Catalogues can show available styles, but they do not supply every measurement needed for your particular watch. Treat a replacement watch hand set as movement-specific: identify the watch and calibre first, then confirm dimensions with the supplier or a watchmaker.

What these names can—and cannot—tell you
A hand name identifies an appearance, not a guaranteed material, movement, era or level of craftsmanship. “Dauphine” does not by itself tell you whether the hand is solid, applied with lume or faceted; “skeleton” describes an openworked shape, not a particular skeletonized movement. When a listing uses several labels, compare the actual silhouette, dimensions and function rather than relying on the name alone.
