Gérald Genta’s most influential designs for other brands include the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak, Patek Philippe Nautilus and Universal Genève Polerouter. Together, they show three sides of his work: the angular integrated-bracelet sports watch, the porthole-inspired luxury watch and an earlier design from 1954. His commissions for IWC, Bulgari and Cartier—and Universal Genève’s thin Shadow watches—show that his work reached well beyond that famous pair.
Which Genta designs belong on a shortlist?
“Best” depends on what you want to understand about Genta’s influence. The Royal Oak and Nautilus are the essential comparison; the Polerouter adds important context from earlier in his career. The other designs below broaden the picture, from thin watches to designs centered on a rounded form or prominent branding.
| Watch or family | Documented date | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|

The dates and design descriptions above are attributed to the respective brands’ histories and archival material: Audemars Piguet for the Royal Oak, Universal Genève for the Polerouter, Shadow family and commission list, and Patek Philippe for the Nautilus. These sources document the models’ design features and attribution; they do not establish a ranking by sales, production or present-day collector demand.
Why are the Royal Oak and Nautilus the essential pair?
Audemars Piguet Royal Oak: an angular steel sports watch
Audemars Piguet credits Genta with the Royal Oak’s design. The brand describes a hand-finished stainless-steel watch with an integrated bracelet, an octagonal bezel fastened by eight visible hexagonal screws, and a guilloché “Tapisserie” dial. Its innovation history gives the original case diameter as 39 mm and dates the watch’s introduction to 1972.

The origin story is unusually precise. In Audemars Piguet’s archival account, chief executive Georges Golay asked Genta to draw “an unprecedented steel watch” for the following morning. Genta made the first drawing during the night of 10–11 April 1970; the Royal Oak was unveiled on 15 April 1972. The drawing date and unveiling date describe different stages in the watch’s development, not competing launch dates.
Patek Philippe Nautilus: a porthole-inspired counterpart
Patek Philippe Magazine describes the Nautilus as conceived by Genta. Its case and bracelet are designed as an integrated whole, with the case taking inspiration from a ship’s porthole. Patek Philippe’s account also emphasizes the then-unusual positioning of a steel watch as a high-luxury object.
Rank #2
The contrast is clearest in the cases: the Royal Oak’s octagonal bezel and exposed hexagonal screws make its geometry explicit, while the Nautilus is organized around its porthole-like shape. Both use the connection between case and bracelet as a defining part of the design, but they do not achieve that effect in the same way.
What does the Polerouter add to Genta’s story?
Universal Genève Polerouter: an earlier milestone
Universal Genève dates the Polerouter to 1954 and says Genta created it at age 23. That places it decades before the Royal Oak and Nautilus, making it essential context for anyone whose picture of Genta begins with 1970s luxury sports watches. The available brand history establishes its date and attribution, but the material cited here does not provide a detailed description of its case or bracelet.
Shadow watches: a different emphasis
Universal Genève’s history associates its White Shadow, Gilt Shadow and Golden Shadow models with caliber 66, whose stated height is 2.5 mm. These watches represent a thin-watch strand of Genta’s documented work rather than another version of the integrated-bracelet sports-watch idea. The 2.5 mm figure refers to the caliber, not the complete watch.

IWC Ingenieur
Universal Genève’s biography lists the IWC Ingenieur, dated 1976, among Genta’s commissions. That establishes his involvement and the model’s place in the chronology; the cited material does not specify its case geometry or other design details.
Rank #4
- Lug size: 31mm
- Buckle size: 20mm
- Band length: 90mm
Bulgari Bulgari
The Bulgari Bulgari, dated 1977, is another useful counterpoint to the integrated sports watches. Universal Genève lists it among Genta’s commissions, and Audemars Piguet’s archival article also names it alongside the Royal Oak and Nautilus. In this shortlist it represents the logo-led direction of his work; the cited sources do not provide further construction specifications.
Cartier Pasha
Universal Genève’s Genta biography lists the Cartier Pasha, dated 1985, among his later brand commissions. It rounds out the range represented here, but the cited account does not describe its specific design features. Attribution and date are the claims the available brand history supports.

How should you choose which design to explore?
- For Genta’s best-known design language: compare the Royal Oak and Nautilus, paying attention to how their different case shapes make the integrated case-and-bracelet idea work.
- For the earlier career context: start with the 1954 Polerouter rather than treating the 1970s watches as the beginning of his work.
- For a different watchmaking emphasis: look at Universal Genève’s Shadow family for the caliber-66 thin-watch connection.
- For the breadth of his commissions: include the Ingenieur, Bulgari Bulgari and Pasha, while distinguishing a documented attribution from design details not specified in the cited histories.
This is a design-history shortlist, not a buying or investment ranking. The cited material does not establish current availability, comparative prices, authenticity guidance or collector demand for these models.
