The A. Lange & Söhne LANGE 1 makes an off-centre dial its defining feature, not a flourish: hours and minutes sit to the left, while the oversized date, power-reserve display and small seconds occupy the right. In the current standard model, that distinctive layout is paired with a manually wound L121.1 movement, twin mainspring barrels and a manufacturer-stated 72-hour power reserve. The result is a watch whose strongest case rests on the coherence of its design and the detail of its movement finishing—not on a performance or comfort verdict established here.
What makes the LANGE 1 distinctive?
Launched on 24 October 1994, the LANGE 1 established its identity through two choices: an intentionally off-centre arrangement of the displays and a large date shown through two separate apertures. A. Lange & Söhne’s 2024 anniversary account identifies both as central to the original watch’s design (manufacturer’s 2024 anniversary account).
The layout is deliberately asymmetric. The large hours-and-minutes circle is on the left; on the right are the outsize date, power-reserve indicator and subsidiary seconds. Their positions relate along an implied vertical axis, so the dial reads as an organized composition rather than a conventional central display with decorative subdials. The brand says the date is about three times larger than dates on watches of comparable dimensions; that is the manufacturer’s comparison, not an independently measured finding (official LANGE 1 product page).
The date itself uses separate tens and units displays in twin windows. This is more than a styling decision: A. Lange & Söhne’s historical account links the original display arrangement to the movement’s base design and identifies the patented outsize-date mechanism as an innovation of the 1994 LANGE 1 (manufacturer’s movement-history article).

How does the current standard LANGE 1 movement work?
The current standard model uses calibre L121.1, a manually wound movement that the manufacturer says contains 368 parts and is assembled twice. It has two mainspring barrels and a stated power reserve of 72 hours. The outsize date switches instantaneously at midnight, according to the official product specifications. These figures describe the manufacturer’s specification; no independent timing test is established here.
A. Lange & Söhne’s 2024 press material gives the L121.1 a frequency of 21,600 semi-oscillations per hour, and identifies it as the company’s 50th manufacture movement, introduced in 2015 (2024 anniversary account). The two-barrel arrangement is a concrete engineering distinction from the larger GRAND LANGE 1, which uses a single, larger barrel.

What does the movement finishing add?
The movement is visible through the caseback, where the manufacturer specifies traditional Glashütte details rather than a plain industrial finish. A three-quarter plate made of untreated German silver carries Glashütte ribbing. Eight screwed gold chatons are held by blued screws; the bevels are hand-polished, and the balance cock is engraved individually by hand (official LANGE 1 product page).
Those details give the movement visual depth and make the caseback part of the watch’s design proposition. They are also best understood as specific construction and finishing choices, not proof by themselves of superior accuracy or durability. The historical lineage is clear: the original LANGE 1 debuted with calibre L901.0, whose features included a hand-engraved balance cock, blued screws and a prominent three-quarter plate (manufacturer’s movement-history article).

How large is the LANGE 1, and how does it compare with the GRAND LANGE 1?
A. Lange & Söhne gives the standard LANGE 1 a 38.5 mm diameter in its 2024 anniversary material. For reference, the same press material lists the LITTLE LANGE 1 at 36.8 mm (2024 anniversary account). The dimensions establish a size comparison only; they do not settle how either watch will feel on a particular wrist.
The GRAND LANGE 1 offers a supported comparison in both size and movement architecture. A. Lange & Söhne’s 2022 press material specifies a 41 mm diameter and 8.2 mm height for the redesigned GRAND LANGE 1, along with manually wound calibre L095.1 and a maximum 72-hour reserve (2022 GRAND LANGE 1 announcement).

The comparison shows two different solutions within the family: the standard LANGE 1’s twin-barrel arrangement and the GRAND LANGE 1’s single larger barrel. It does not establish a difference in accuracy, comfort or overall preference.

For the LANGE 1’s 30th anniversary in 2024, A. Lange & Söhne announced versions in 950 platinum with a black onyx dial and 750 pink gold with a blue dial. The company stated that each edition was limited to 300 watches (2024 anniversary announcement). Those are announcement details, not confirmation of present-day stock or availability.

The anniversary also provides a useful historical marker. In 2023, the manufacturer reported that it had created 71 manufacture movements since 1990; that is the company’s count as of that article, not a current total (manufacturer’s movement-history article).
What this review can—and cannot—establish
The available specifications and historical details come from A. Lange & Söhne. They support an assessment of the LANGE 1’s design logic, stated construction and movement finishing, but do not establish independent chronometric performance, on-wrist comfort, service costs, current dealer pricing or current availability. Those points depend on actual testing, the specific watch and market, and timely verification.
For a purchase decision, compare the exact reference and materials, dial, dimensions, condition and service documentation, then confirm regional pricing and availability with a seller. The anniversary editions described above should not be assumed to be obtainable simply because they were announced.
