The more useful case for renewed attention is the range itself: it spans quartz and automatic movements, several sizes, steel through precious metals, and diamond-set versions. Here is what is verifiably new—and how to choose between two representative steel models.
What is new about the Cartier Ballon Bleu?
On its US collection page, Cartier labels some gold and diamond configurations “NEW.” The listed examples include a 40 mm automatic yellow-gold watch on a leather strap and a 36 mm white-gold diamond-set watch on leather. Those additions broaden the current assortment, but the pages do not provide a before-and-after technical comparison for the core steel models. They therefore do not substantiate claims that the steel Ballon Bleu has a new movement, improved accuracy, a thinner case, better water resistance, or revised ergonomics. Cartier’s current US Ballon Bleu collection also includes many other sizes and configurations.
Cartier describes the design as: “When the watchmaker of shapes designs the circle, the result is an original vision of roundness.” That is the brand’s own description. For a buyer, the distinctive round case and crown guard are part of the watch’s identity; the current lineup’s practical difference is how that design is expressed across sizes, movements, materials, and dials.
How much does a Cartier Ballon Bleu cost?

These are examples from a larger collection, not a complete price list. Individual references may show different prices: for example, the 33 mm reference compared below is listed at $6,350 on its product page, despite the collection page’s $6,800 example for a 33 mm automatic steel configuration. Compare the exact reference on Cartier’s site rather than assuming one price applies to every watch of the same diameter.

Which Ballon Bleu size should you choose?
Start with how the watch should sit and look on your wrist, rather than treating diameter as a complete fit measurement. The cited models differ by 9 mm in nominal diameter and by 2.84 mm in listed thickness, as well as by dial color, strap, and date display. If possible, try the exact reference on wrist; a larger diameter is not the only factor in how a watch wears.

- Consider the 33 mm WSBB0030 if you want a more compact case and a silver dial on an alligator strap. Its product page lists a 10.16 mm thickness.
- Consider the 42 mm WSBB0027 if you prefer a larger presence, blue guilloché dial, leather strap, and date aperture. Its product page lists a 13 mm thickness and caliber 1847 MC.
- Compare other references if you want quartz convenience, a different diameter, two-tone or precious-metal construction, or diamonds. The collection includes options beyond these two steel automatics.
What does 3 bar water resistance mean?
Both cited steel references are listed by Cartier as water resistant to 3 bar, approximately 30 meters. That rating should not be read as a promise that either watch is suitable for swimming or diving. Follow Cartier’s care and water-use guidance for the exact reference, particularly before exposing a luxury watch to water.
