They appear on watches as different as a practical GMT, a modern field watch, a vintage railway piece, an aviation-style tool watch and the reversible Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso. These five recommendations come from Henry Black’s August 25, 2025 Fratello article; they are one writer’s selections, not the results of a comparative test.

1. Seiko 5 Sports GMT “Field” SSK023
The SSK023 combines a field-watch-style black dial with a GMT display. Arabic hour numerals share the face with a 13–24-hour scale, while the fixed stainless-steel bezel carries a 24-hour scale. A date adds another everyday function without changing the dial’s basic tool-watch character.
Black reports a 39.4 mm case, 13.6 mm thickness and 47.9 mm lug-to-lug length, along with 20 mm lug spacing. The article identifies the movement as Seiko’s 4R34 GMT caliber, with an approximately 41-hour power reserve and 100 m water resistance. Those are article-reported specifications rather than a current manufacturer verification.

Among these five, this is the most direct pick for someone who wants Arabic numerals and a second-time-zone display in a practical daily-watch format. Black also notes a visual connection to his earlier Seiko 5 SNZG11; that is his design comparison, not a claim that the models are equivalent.
2. Formex Field Automatic
The Field Automatic brings a more contemporary treatment to the field-watch idea. The article describes a Grade 2 titanium case hardened to 900 Vickers, a screw-down crown and 150 m water resistance. Its reported dimensions are 40 mm across, 46.6 mm lug-to-lug and 10.6 mm thick. Black names a Sellita SW200 movement and a date at six o’clock.

The dial colors discussed are salmon, aquamarine and charcoal. The numerals draw on Art Deco styling, including a cut-off nine. Black says the charcoal version has white numerals and stronger lume, and identifies it as his favorite; both the lume comparison and favorite are his observations and preference.
This is the option for a reader who likes familiar field-watch legibility but wants a distinct case material and a more design-led dial. The listed specifications describe the version in the 2025 article; check the exact current configuration for any particular listing.

3. Universal Genève FS: a railway-watch history
FS stands for Ferrovie dello Stato, or Italian State Railway. Black describes the watches as made for Italian railway workers from the early-to-mid-1960s through the mid-1970s. Their white dials, black Arabic numerals and subsidiary seconds create a restrained layout suited to reading time quickly.
The article distinguishes three variants: MK I with a 34 mm case, and MK II and MK III with 36 mm cushion cases. It says MK I and MK II have enamel dials and identifies Universal Genève caliber 64. These details are useful starting points for identifying a variant, but vintage examples should be checked by their specific reference and condition.

Black estimates that about 80,000 FS watches were made. The article provides no underlying record or method for that number, so it should be treated as his reported estimate rather than an established production total.

The Mark line offers a different route to the same practical appeal: an aviation-watch family built around legibility. Black discusses the modern Mark XX as well as older Mark XV, XII, XVII and XVIII watches, but the family name alone does not establish the specification of a particular watch.

For the older references he describes, the Mark XV is 38 mm and uses a modified ETA 2892-A2; the Mark XII is 36 mm and uses a Jaeger-LeCoultre caliber. He also mentions an iron inner cage for magnetic resistance and 6-bar water resistance for older models. These are details reported in the article, and they should not be applied to every Mark reference: verify the exact model and condition, especially when evaluating a pre-owned listing.
Black’s favorite is the Mark XV. He also characterizes used Mark XVII and XVIII watches as bargains, but that is an editorial opinion, not a current market-price comparison.
5. Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso: numerals in a reversible case
The Reverso is the most distinctive design in this group. Its case turns over to shield the watch face, a concept the article traces to polo. Arabic numerals are not present on every Reverso, so the dial must be checked rather than inferred from the model family.
Black’s recommendation is to look for a smaller mechanical Reverso with Arabic numerals, without naming a particular reference. He favors a pre-owned example as a personal buying preference; the article does not compare current prices or identify a specific model to seek.

- For a GMT: The Seiko SSK023 is the only recommendation here with a GMT complication and a 24-hour bezel.
- For a modern field-watch look: Compare the Seiko’s GMT-oriented layout with the Formex’s Art Deco-inspired numerals and titanium case.
- For vintage character: The Universal Genève FS is the railway-watch choice; confirm the variant, dial and condition carefully.
- For an aviation-watch family: Look at a specific IWC Mark reference, not just the Mark name, because the details differ across models and generations.
- For a reversible case: Search Reverso references individually and verify that the specific dial actually has Arabic numerals.
Numeral style is only one part of legibility. Also consider the spacing and contrast of the markers, the hands, any added scales or date display, and whether the case dimensions suit your wrist. For older or pre-owned watches, reference accuracy and condition matter as much as the family name.
