Omega Speedmaster FOiS Gen. 1 vs. Gen. 2: What Changed?

The first modern Omega Speedmaster First Omega in Space (FOiS), reference 311.32.40.30.01.001, pairs the earlier black-dial design with a hand-wound caliber 1861. The 2024 successor keeps the 39.7 mm case diameter but brings a grey-blue dial, a hand-wound Co-Axial Master Chronometer caliber 3861, and a bracelet option. Gen. 1 suits buyers drawn to the original modern FOiS; Gen. 2 is the more technically updated and configurable watch. The best choice depends on which details matter to you—and on the condition and local price of the specific watch.

How to identify each FOiS generation

Omega introduced the first modern FOiS in 2012 and discontinued it in 2020, according to Fratello’s history of the model. Its reference is 311.32.40.30.01.001. The successor arrived in 2024.

Check the complete reference rather than relying on a seller’s shorthand. The Gen. 2 bracelet model is 310.30.40.50.06.001. Omega’s Japanese listing identifies the brown-leather version as 310.32.40.50.06.002; Time and Watches lists a black-leather version as 310.32.40.50.06.001. These are different configurations, not interchangeable SKU numbers. Omega’s Japanese product listing is for the bracelet reference.

Both modern generations draw on the CK 2998 worn by Walter “Wally” Schirra on the Sigma 7 mission on October 3, 1962. Omega describes that watch as the first Omega in space. The modern FOiS watches honor that design lineage; neither is the original CK 2998.

What changed between Gen. 1 and Gen. 2?

Feature Gen. 1 Gen. 2
Reference and era 311.32.40.30.01.001; introduced in 2012 and discontinued in 2020, per Fratello. Introduced in 2024; references differ by bracelet or strap configuration.
Case dimensions 39.7 mm diameter, 13.5 mm thick, and 47 mm lug-to-lug, as reported in Fratello’s comparison. 39.7 mm diameter, 13.4 mm thick, and 48.0 mm lug-to-lug; Omega lists a 19 mm lug width on its Japanese product page.
Movement Hand-wound caliber 1861. Hand-wound Co-Axial Master Chronometer caliber 3861, with a 50-hour power reserve and Omega-stated resistance to magnetic fields of 15,000 gauss.
Dial and hands Earlier black-dial presentation; Fratello describes white lume and a more rudimentary dial. Grey-blue dial, vintage-style Omega logos, Alpha hour and minute hands, a baton central chronograph-seconds hand, and vintage Super-LumiNova.
Crystal and bezel Sapphire crystal, according to Fratello’s Gen. 1 history. Omega describes a shaped sapphire crystal with a Hesalite-like appearance; black aluminum tachymeter bezel with a dot over 90.
Original configuration Presented on a strap, according to Fratello. Listed in steel-bracelet and leather-strap versions; check the exact reference and what is included in any listing.

Case size and wrist fit

Both watches measure 39.7 mm across, so the generation change is not a move to a larger diameter. The published lug-to-lug figures are close: 47 mm for Gen. 1 in Fratello’s comparison and 48.0 mm for Gen. 2 in Omega’s specifications. Thickness is likewise close in the reported figures: 13.5 mm for Gen. 1 versus 13.4 mm for Gen. 2. These small differences are a reason to try each on if possible, not evidence of a dramatic change in wear.

Omega lists a 19 mm lug width for the Gen. 2 bracelet reference. Strap fit and included accessories depend on the precise reference and listing; do not assume every Gen. 2 listing has the same configuration.

Movement: caliber 1861 versus caliber 3861

Gen. 1 uses the hand-wound caliber 1861. Gen. 2’s caliber 3861 is also hand-wound, but adds a Co-Axial escapement and Master Chronometer certification. Omega states a 50-hour power reserve and magnetic resistance of 15,000 gauss for the newer movement on its product listing.

This is the clearest technical distinction between the generations. It does not make the older caliber 1861 defective; the choice is whether the newer movement’s stated specifications and certification matter enough to outweigh Gen. 1’s earlier styling or the price and condition of a particular example.

Dial, crystal, and vintage character

Gen. 1 keeps the earlier black-dial look. Gen. 2 changes the palette to grey-blue and uses vintage-style logos and Alpha hands. Omega also describes its shaped sapphire crystal as Hesalite-like, pairing a vintage-inspired profile with sapphire material. The black aluminum tachymeter bezel has a dot over 90.

These are differences in design, not an objective ranking. If you prefer the original modern FOiS presentation, the newer dial and hands may be a reason to seek Gen. 1. If the updated interpretation appeals to you, Gen. 2 carries that look while retaining the same case diameter.

Bracelet, straps, and buying the right reference

The original modern FOiS was presented on a strap. The Gen. 2 range adds an Omega-listed steel-bracelet configuration alongside leather versions. That gives buyers a factory bracelet option without changing the basic comparison into a different case size or movement category.

  • For the Gen. 1, verify reference 311.32.40.30.01.001 and confirm the strap and accessories actually included.
  • For a Gen. 2 bracelet, verify 310.30.40.50.06.001.
  • For Gen. 2 leather versions, verify the suffix: Omega’s Japanese listing is brown leather reference 310.32.40.50.06.002, while Time and Watches lists black leather reference 310.32.40.50.06.001.

Gen. 1 is discontinued, so a listing may be for a pre-owned watch. Examine condition, provenance, seller history, and what is included rather than treating the reference alone as proof of the watch’s state.

Price and availability: compare like with like

There is no current Gen. 1 market price established here. Gen. 2 launch coverage published in 2024 reported €8,400 / US$7,500 for leather and €8,800 / US$7,900 for the bracelet in Time and Watches’ October 4, 2024 report. In an October 13, 2024 comparison, Fratello reported €8,700 for the bracelet configuration. These are dated launch-era figures, not current quotes or directly comparable current-market prices. Check local Omega pricing and the actual asking price, condition, and configuration of any pre-owned example.

Which generation should you choose?

Choose Gen. 1 if…

  • You prefer its earlier black-dial design and original modern FOiS presentation.
  • You want caliber 1861 and do not need Gen. 2’s movement update.
  • You find an example whose condition, provenance, and price make sense for you.

Choose Gen. 2 if…

  • You value the Co-Axial Master Chronometer caliber 3861, including its stated specifications and certification.
  • You prefer the grey-blue dial, vintage-style details, and Omega-described Hesalite-like crystal profile.
  • You want the option of an Omega-listed steel bracelet rather than a strap-only original presentation.

Neither generation is the automatic winner. The shared 39.7 mm diameter makes the decision less about size and more about movement, styling, configuration, and the individual watch’s condition and price.
