Alpha Glass: What Happened to the “First Casual” AR Smartglasses?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Alpha Glass was a genuine 2017 augmented-reality glasses project from Palo Alto startup The Alpha Labs, but it was never established as a successful mass-market product. Its Kickstarter sought $100,000 for a developer kit, raised $28,987 from 55 backers, and ended unsuccessfully on August 4, 2017. The consumer edition discussed at the time was planned, not verified as launched. No reliable evidence establishes an active official retail channel today.

What Alpha Glass was

Alpha Glass was an AR smartglasses project developed by The Alpha Labs in Palo Alto, California. The company positioned it as a more casual-looking alternative to bulky headsets and the conspicuous appearance associated with Google Glass. Contemporary coverage showed a conventional eyewear silhouette, but with noticeably thicker temples and visible silver hardware, including a camera module.

The phrase “first casual AR smartglasses” was marketing positioning, not an independently proven industry distinction. Other AR glasses already existed in 2017, including products announced by ODG and Qualcomm: Qualcomm’s 2017 ODG announcement is one example.

The genuinely interesting goal was to make AR equipment look closer to ordinary eyewear while retaining a camera, display, audio, sensors and wireless connectivity.

The Beast gives you both — cranked to eleven.

What problem it tried to solve

The Alpha Labs team was responding to a basic obstacle in early AR: hardware that was technically impressive but socially and physically difficult to wear. Co-founder Junhee Lee reportedly cited dissatisfaction with Google Glass’s form factor as a motivation. Alpha Glass aimed to answer practical questions: could people wear AR in public, receive useful information without a headset, and avoid an overtly industrial appearance?

“Casual” described the intended style and use case. It did not prove that the glasses were lightweight, comfortable all day, prescription-compatible, waterproof, independent of a phone, or safe for driving. The thick arms, battery, camera and optical components remained visible compromises.

How the optical system was supposed to work

Period reporting described a micro-OLED display and a collimator lens near the nose bridge. The optical path reflected the display image onto the spectacle lens, using what The Alpha Labs called a Separated Modular Optical System. Wareable reported an approximately 30-degree field of view, consistent with a limited information area rather than a full-vision visor.

A separate 2017 technical report listed a 360-degree field of view alongside a 1280×1024 SXGA display: Electronics360’s report. That figure conflicts with the approximately 30-degree description and the physical design shown in other coverage. A 360-degree visual field should therefore be treated as an unverified or incorrectly reported specification, not as an established capability.

Reported hardware and features

The following specifications came from campaign-era descriptions and contemporary reporting, rather than independent production testing:

Rank #2
XREAL xbx a01+ AR Glasses, 147'' Big-Screen Display for Movies & Gaming
  • YOUR PRIVATE 147” BIG SCREEN, ANYWHERE — Plug the a01+ into your phone, tablet, handheld, or laptop and a giant 147” screen appears in front of you—for movies, gaming, or getting work done on the couch, on a flight, or in bed. A true portable display you wear, in a soda-can-sized 210g case that drops in your pocket.
  • ALWAYS RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU — The screen follows your view with smooth, stabilized tracking and stays centered as you look around—nothing to anchor or set up, and no drift to reset. Press play and your big screen is simply there.
  • 62G — LIGHT ENOUGH TO FORGET — At just 62g, with three nose-pad sizes and flexible temples, the a01+ stays comfortable through a long movie or flight, even lying down.
  • LOOKS LIKE SUNGLASSES, NOT A GADGET — A slim, sunglasses-style frame with a signature semi-transparent chassis and neon logo—light and low-profile enough to actually wear out.
  • WORKS WITH YOUR USB-C GEAR — No Battery to Charge — Connects and powers over a single USB-C DisplayPort cable: iPhone 15/16/17, iPad, DP-capable Android phones, Steam Deck, ROG Ally, Mac and PC. Nintendo Switch/Switch 2 and older (Lightning) iPhones need an adapter. For long phone sessions, add the XREAL Hub to charge and watch at once.
  • Micro-OLED display and approximately 30-degree field of view as reported by Wareable
  • 5-megapixel CMOS camera
  • Quad-core processor and Android 5.1
  • Wi-Fi and Bluetooth
  • Microphone and bone-conduction speakers
  • Touchpad input and a 9-axis inertial-measurement unit
  • Battery, with one period report listing approximately six hours of endurance
  • Companion smartphone application

Bone-conduction audio could deliver navigation prompts and alerts while leaving the ears open to surrounding sound. The trade-offs would likely include weaker bass, reduced privacy and sound leakage, but the available coverage contains no independent acoustic measurements.

What users were meant to see and do

Promoted uses included map directions, notifications, messages, calendar alerts, weather, fitness or health information, camera previews, app and website information, gaming and voice guidance. The display was described as a rectangular information area in the upper-central portion of vision, making it better suited to short overlays than expansive spatial computing.

Reported software modes included:

  • Home
  • Game
  • Camera
  • Navigation
  • Health

The companion app was intended to customize modes and control the glasses over Bluetooth. Developer-facing plans also mentioned automatic-settings, text and mouse input, Android sensor access, gesture, image synchronization and voice-control APIs, plus four-direction touch input. These were ecosystem plans and proposed capabilities, not evidence of a mature application catalog.

Developer kit versus planned consumer model

The Kickstarter primarily sought to put hardware in developers’ hands so they could build applications and help refine the platform before a consumer release.

Aspect Developer kit Planned consumer version
Purpose Application and platform development Everyday consumer use
Historical price About $720 About $999
Availability Proposed Kickstarter reward Planned, not verified
Software expectation Encourage developers to create an ecosystem Dependent on that ecosystem
Status Campaign failed to reach its goal No confirmed commercial launch

The $720 and $999 figures were 2017 campaign-era targets, not current prices.

What happened to the Kickstarter campaign?

Kicktraq’s campaign record lists these final historical figures:

Item Recorded figure
Campaign dates June 20–August 4, 2017
Funding goal $100,000
Amount pledged $28,987
Backers 55
Result Unsuccessful
Share of goal Approximately 28%

One contemporary report showed the campaign at about $10,991 during the fundraising period; that interim total should not be confused with the final result. The failed campaign means the proposed delivery schedule was not guaranteed and the consumer edition remained speculative. It does not, by itself, prove that no prototype units ever existed or that the company ceased operations.

Did Alpha Glass ever ship?

The available evidence does not verify broad or sustained shipment. A period report said developer kits were expected in February if the campaign received full backing, making that a conditional projection rather than a confirmed delivery date. Demonstration videos and campaign descriptions show intended functionality, not manufacturing completion, retail fulfillment or long-term support.

That distinction matters: a prototype demonstration, a developer-kit pledge, a campaign promise, fulfilled hardware and a consumer retail product are different milestones. The sources establish the first two as project ambitions, but not a completed mainstream launch.

Why the concept was compelling—and difficult

Design and social acceptance

The glasses-like shape was more approachable than a headset, but thick temples and a visible camera weakened the claim that Alpha Glass was indistinguishable from regular eyewear.

Display limitations

A compact optical package could fit into a glasses frame, yet a small viewing area is naturally better for notifications and simple overlays than immersive, wide-field AR.

Camera privacy

A 5-megapixel camera enabled first-person capture and camera-assisted applications while introducing the same social and privacy concerns that affected earlier camera-equipped glasses.

Power and software

Battery, thermal and optical constraints had to fit inside the temples. The open developer strategy could have produced useful applications, but it also made the product dependent on developers, phone integration and long-term platform support.

Crowdfunding risk

Manufacturing delays, optical redesign, incomplete software, battery limitations, app scarcity and difficulty meeting the proposed consumer price were all material risks for a project that did not reach its funding target.

Can you buy Alpha Glass today?

No reliable evidence in the available sources confirms a current official Alpha Glass store, order page, support portal or replacement-parts program. The historical Kickstarter page—Alpha Glass on Kickstarter—should be treated as a campaign reference, not a purchase page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Individual prototypes or leftover units could theoretically appear on a secondary market, but their battery condition, phone compatibility, software access, repairability and safety cannot be assumed. Anyone seeking a currently supported smartglasses product, a warranty, replacement lenses or a mature app ecosystem should not treat Alpha Glass as a dependable buying option.

Alpha Glass’s legacy

Alpha Glass is best understood as an early attempt to solve AR’s form-factor problem: put useful digital information, audio and sensing into something closer to ordinary eyewear. Its Kickstarter failure kept that ambition from becoming a verified mainstream product. The project remains historically useful because it shows how difficult it was—and still is—to combine acceptable styling, compact optics, battery life, privacy, software support and affordable manufacturing in one pair of glasses.
