The fix required both Fossil Smartwatches app version 5.1.6 and a Wear OS 3 watch update reported as build RFHC.230409.014. It is a historical restoration, not a new 2026 release, but existing owners can still use these steps to check eligibility and set it up.
The original rollout report confirmed Assistant could be selected in the Fossil app and launched from the watch’s upper-right button.
What changed in the Fossil Gen 6 update?
Wear OS 3 removed Google Assistant from several watches during its rollout. Fossil’s June 2023 software release restored it on Fossil Gen 6 models, including the Gen 6 Wellness Edition. Once updated, owners could choose “Hey Google” as the default assistant, speak commands, or use a hardware-button shortcut.
The restoration did not come from a watch firmware update alone. The phone companion app and watch software both had to be current.

Required software and compatibility

RFHC.230409.014 was the build documented during the rollout, not necessarily the only build delivered to every owner. Check your actual version at Settings → System → About → Versions; Google notes that labels can vary by manufacturer (Google’s version and update guidance).
The confirmed coverage centered on Fossil Gen 6 and Gen 6 Wellness. Fossil Group relatives such as Diesel, Michael Kors and Skagen Gen 6 models were expected to receive related support, but timing and availability could vary by model, region and build. Verify the exact watch rather than assuming every Fossil Group model is eligible.
How to enable Google Assistant
1. Update the phone app and watch
- Update Fossil Smartwatches from Google Play, aiming for version 5.1.6 or a later compatible release.
- On the watch, install any pending system and Play Store updates.
- Keep the watch charging and connected to Wi-Fi while updates install.
2. Select Assistant in the Fossil app
- Open the Fossil Smartwatches app on the paired phone.
- Open Preferences.
- Tap Default assistant.
- Select Hey Google.
3. Complete watch setup
- On the watch, open Settings → Google → Assistant.
- Follow the prompts on the paired phone and finish account setup.
- Say “Hey Google” to test voice activation.
- On the reported Fossil configuration, a long press of the upper-right button opened Assistant. Button behavior can differ with model or shortcut settings.
Google’s newer general instructions may instead direct owners to the watch Play Store to install or update Google Assistant or Gemini, followed by Settings → Google → Digital Assistant → Hey Google Detection where that menu exists (Google’s current assistant guidance). Older Fossil software may show the Fossil-specific labels above.

If Fossil says “Your watch’s software version is not supported”
That message usually means the app cannot identify an eligible Wear OS 3 build, the companion app is outdated, or the rollout has not reached that model or region. Work through these checks in order:

- Confirm the watch is running Wear OS 3, not Wear OS 2, under Settings → System → About → Versions.
- Update the Fossil Smartwatches app and all watch Play Store apps.
- Put the watch on its charger, connect it to Wi-Fi and retry the system-update check.
- Restart both the watch and phone, then reopen Preferences → Default assistant.
- If the update remains unavailable, temporarily disable Bluetooth and retry the watch update; Google lists this as a troubleshooting step for update problems.
- Check the watch’s account, language and region settings, since Assistant availability is not universal.
- Do not factory-reset first. A reset erases settings and data and may not resolve an eligibility or rollout issue.
Google’s detailed update checklist covers charging, Wi-Fi, Play Store updates and retrying with Bluetooth temporarily disabled (Wear OS update support). An old, reset or poorly supported watch may also have difficulty pairing with the current phone app.
What Google Assistant can do on the watch
- Send quick message replies.
- Set alarms, timers, reminders and other daily tasks.
- Play music.
- Check information such as weather.
- Control compatible smart-home devices.
Capabilities depend on the watch build, Google account, language, region and connection. LTE commands may require an active cellular plan; Bluetooth models generally use the paired phone’s internet connection. The watch’s microphone, small display, installed apps and older hardware also limit what it can do compared with a phone.

Important compatibility boundaries
Wear OS 2
Google’s current policy says Google Assistant is no longer supported on Wear OS 2.x. The Fossil restoration applies to the Gen 6 Wear OS 3 software path, not every Fossil watch that looks similar (Google Assistant eligibility details).
Assistant versus Gemini
The Fossil update restored Google Assistant in 2023. Google’s current documentation discusses Assistant on selected Wear OS 3-or-newer watches and Gemini on selected Wear OS 4-or-newer watches. That terminology does not prove that a Gen 6 supports every newer Gemini feature.

Wear OS 3 watches have feature limitations when paired with iOS, including restrictions involving Google Wallet and Google Maps. Check compatibility before buying for an iPhone; Android is the safer assumption for the Fossil setup described here (Google’s Wear OS pairing guidance).

Is a Fossil Gen 6 worth buying now?
For an existing owner
Yes, if the update is offered for your watch. Restored Assistant fills a significant Wear OS 3 omission and makes voice commands and the button shortcut useful again. It does not, however, move the watch to a newer Wear OS generation or change its age, battery behavior, processor or remaining support outlook.
For a discounted used or clearance watch
It can make sense at a low price if you verify that the watch powers on, pairs, reaches Wear OS 3 and can still update. Treat future app, security and assistant support as uncertain.
For a full-price new purchase
It is difficult to justify. Fossil stopped producing new Wear OS smartwatches in January 2024 and subsequently exited the smartwatch market, so the Gen 6 is an aging platform rather than a current product line (Fossil market-exit coverage). Newer Google Pixel Watch and Samsung Galaxy Watch models offer more current software and clearer long-term support paths. Fossil’s support page remains available, but it is not evidence of a new 2026 Gen 6 firmware program (Fossil Wear OS support).

The Bottom Line
The Fossil Gen 6’s Google Assistant return was real, but it happened on June 21, 2023. Update both the Fossil app and Wear OS 3 watch, select Preferences → Default assistant → Hey Google, and troubleshoot the unsupported-version message before resetting. For owners, it is a worthwhile quality-of-life fix; for new buyers in 2026, Fossil’s market exit makes newer supported watches the safer investment.
