Apple made iOS 26, iPadOS 26, watchOS 26, and macOS Tahoe 26 available on September 15, 2025—not in 2026. The releases brought Apple’s Liquid Glass redesign to iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, and Mac, alongside platform-specific changes. “Taohe” is a typo; Apple’s name is Tahoe. Apple has since issued later 26.x updates, so check its security releases list for current versions rather than treating the original 26.0 launch as the latest update.

What Apple released—and what Liquid Glass means

The shared “26” numbering identifies a coordinated generation of Apple operating systems; it does not mean these systems first launched in 2026. Apple announced the free software updates on September 15, 2025. The four releases in this article are iOS 26 for iPhone, iPadOS 26 for iPad, watchOS 26 for Apple Watch, and macOS Tahoe 26 for Mac. Apple’s launch announcement also covered its other platforms.

Liquid Glass is Apple’s cross-platform visual language: translucent, layered interface surfaces and updated controls, navigation, and system elements. It is intended to give Apple’s platforms a more consistent look, but it does not make every app identical. The experience can also differ with device capability, app design, and visual or accessibility settings.

What changed in iOS 26?

On iPhone, the redesign is accompanied by changes to communication, accessibility, and system apps. Apple’s iOS 26 feature guide describes, among other additions:

What changed in iPadOS 26?

iPadOS 26 adds productivity changes that matter specifically on a larger screen, rather than being only an iPhone redesign scaled up. Apple highlights more flexible windowing and multitasking, along with Files improvements intended to make document-heavy work easier.

What changed in watchOS 26?

watchOS 26 brings Liquid Glass styling to Apple Watch and adds changes to fitness, Smart Stack, notifications, accessibility, and communication. Apple highlighted Workout Buddy, which provides personalized workout insights as an Apple Intelligence-related capability. Its availability depends on supported hardware and features; being able to install watchOS 26 does not by itself guarantee access to every capability. Apple also describes interoperability with iPhone features such as Live Captions where supported.

For installation, Apple Watch needs a compatible paired iPhone, must remain near that iPhone, and should be on its charger during the update. Apple’s supported-device list for this release starts at Apple Watch Series 6; use Apple’s current compatibility and update guidance for pairing requirements specific to your setup.

What changed in macOS Tahoe 26?

macOS Tahoe 26 brings Liquid Glass to the Mac, with updated system visuals and controls, and adds Mac-specific Apple Intelligence and productivity features. Continuity features connect Mac workflows with iPhone and iPad. The headline design update is not the same as universal feature support: Tahoe runs on a mix of Intel and Apple-silicon Macs, while Apple Intelligence and some advanced capabilities may require Apple silicon or other specific hardware.

How to install the update

Before a major update, back up important data, connect to reliable Wi-Fi and power, and make sure there is enough free storage. Installation and restart time varies by device and connection. Do not interrupt a device while it is installing or restarting.

iPhone and iPad

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap General, then Software Update.
  3. Review the offered update and tap the option to download and install it. Depending on what is available, the screen may offer Update Now or Update Tonight.
  4. Enter your passcode if prompted, then leave the device connected to power while installation completes.

Apple Watch

  1. Charge the watch and keep it near its paired iPhone.
  2. On the iPhone, open the Watch app.
  3. Tap General, then Software Update.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions and keep the watch on its charger and near the iPhone during installation.

Mac

  1. Open the Apple menu and choose System Settings.
  2. Select General, then Software Update.
  3. If Tahoe is offered and the Mac is eligible, choose the install option and follow the prompts.
  4. Keep the Mac connected to power and allow it to restart as needed.

Should you update now?

The right decision depends on the device, your need for the new features, and whether the apps or workflows you rely on are ready for the change.

Updating is a reasonable choice if

  • You want the new platform features, accessibility changes, or Liquid Glass interface.
  • You keep your devices current for security fixes and maintenance. Check Apple’s release history for the current update offered to your model.
  • Your essential apps and accessories are compatible, and you have a verified backup.

Consider waiting if

  • Your older device is business-critical and you cannot afford disruption to battery life, performance, connectivity, notifications, or essential third-party apps.
  • You depend on specialized apps or enterprise management tools that have not yet been validated with the version offered to you.
  • You are expecting Apple Intelligence or another specific feature but have not confirmed its hardware, language, and regional requirements.

For managed devices, IT teams should validate core applications, management tooling, and any operational dependencies before broad deployment. Do not assume that a beta, release candidate, and public production update are interchangeable.

How the original release differs from later 26.x updates

The September 15, 2025 launch was the initial major release, not a claim about what version is current today. Apple’s security releases history records later maintenance and feature updates, including iOS and iPadOS 26.0.1 (September 29, 2025), iOS, iPadOS, and macOS Tahoe 26.1 (November 3, 2025), 26.2 releases (December 12, 2025), and 26.4 releases (March 24, 2026), followed by later 26.x entries. Apple’s developer release listings may also include beta software; a beta listing is not evidence that the same build is a public production release. Check Apple’s production release history for the version available to your particular device.

If an update does not appear or fails

  • Restart the device, then check Software Update again and confirm the model is eligible.
  • Free storage if needed, connect to power, switch to a stable Wi-Fi network, and retry.
  • If a downloaded update failed, remove it only if the device offers that option, then download it again.
  • For an Apple Watch update problem, keep the watch on its charger and retry from the iPhone’s Watch app.
  • If a device becomes unresponsive, use Apple’s official recovery or service instructions. Back up before attempting a major update or downgrade; do not improvise a reset that could erase data.
