Can You Replace a Samsung Galaxy Watch Battery? What to Know Before You Repair

A Galaxy Watch battery can be replaced, but opening the sealed case risks delicate parts and water resistance. Learn how to check the fault and choose a repair option.

Yes—but not like changing a traditional watch battery. A Galaxy Watch has a rechargeable battery sealed inside its case. Replacing it means opening the watch, disconnecting delicate components, removing adhesive and resealing the case. Samsung’s US support directs owners to request service; DIY is possible for some models, but it carries damage and water-resistance risks.

Before buying a battery, confirm that the battery is actually the problem. Then choose among Samsung service, a qualified independent repair shop, DIY repair for a supported model, or replacement of the watch.

What “replaceable” means for a Galaxy Watch

The battery is replaceable in a repair-shop sense, but it is not owner-swappable from the outside. There is no battery hatch, and the cell is not a coin battery. Access requires opening the rear case and working around internal connectors and adhesive.

Samsung’s US repair process offers service-request options such as walk-in and mail-in arrangements. The service available and the repair outcome depend on the model, location, coverage and inspection; the cited support page does not promise a battery-only replacement for every watch.

Check whether the battery is really failing

Unusually fast drain, unexpected shutdowns, restarts, failure to hold a charge or markedly shorter runtime can point to a worn battery. They can also result from a charger, charging connection, software, settings or other hardware fault. Samsung’s charging and power troubleshooting covers several possible causes.

Try these checks before ordering a part

  1. Charge with the original or Samsung-approved equipment. Inspect the charging puck and the watch’s back for dirt or damage, and try another compatible charger if available.
  2. Restart the watch and install pending watch and Galaxy Wearable software updates.
  3. Check power use: always-on display, GPS, LTE, Wi-Fi, health tracking and third-party apps can affect runtime. Test with a standard watch face, reduce features you do not need, or use Power saving mode. Samsung also documents Watch Only mode as an option for reducing power use.
  4. If the watch is paired with a compatible Samsung phone, run the battery diagnostic in Samsung Members. Samsung recommends this diagnostic as one way to assess battery condition; it is evidence, not a guarantee that the battery is healthy or faulty. See Samsung’s battery-life troubleshooting.
  5. If the watch will not power on or charges inconsistently, investigate the charger and connection before assuming the battery is dead. A drop or liquid exposure also warrants a broader inspection.

If the watch began shutting down unexpectedly, Samsung notes that low battery, outdated software and third-party apps may all be relevant; see its random-shutdown guidance.

Which Galaxy Watch models can be repaired?

Battery availability and repair instructions vary by generation and exact variant. A guide for one model is not a universal procedure, and a battery that fits one Galaxy Watch may not fit another.

Model family What is established Practical guidance
Original Galaxy Watch iFixit publishes a battery replacement guide. Use the exact-model guide and account for the risks of opening and resealing the case.
Galaxy Watch3 iFixit’s parts catalog lists replacement batteries. Verify the exact model and part before purchase.
Galaxy Watch4 and Watch4 Classic iFixit lists replacement batteries; its catalog distinguishes case-size families. Do not order by generation alone. Match the exact model and size.
Galaxy Watch5 and Watch5 Pro iFixit publishes a Watch5 battery guide. It documents internal cable disconnections. Expect delicate disassembly; do not assume the same steps apply to every variant.
Galaxy Watch Active and Active2 The cited sources do not establish a model-specific procedure or part for every variant. Check exact-model service and parts availability before deciding.
Galaxy Watch6, Watch6 Classic, Watch7, Watch8, Watch8 Classic and Galaxy Watch Ultra The sources cited here do not establish one universal replacement procedure or parts compatibility across these models. Seek an exact-model service answer or specialist assessment; do not infer compatibility from another generation.

Find the exact model number in the Galaxy Wearable app, on the watch or on its packaging. Case size, Classic versus standard model, connectivity variant, connector and battery dimensions can matter. iFixit’s Samsung smartwatch parts catalog, for example, lists different Watch4 size families.

Choose a repair route

Samsung service

Start through Samsung’s US repair request or its wearables support page. Ask whether the exact model is serviceable, whether the proposed work is a battery replacement or a larger assembly repair, what the total quote is, and whether the service includes a water-resistance evaluation. Check any warranty or protection-plan coverage before authorizing work. Service availability and parts support can differ by model and location.

Samsung service is usually the sensible first call for a watch under coverage, a recent or valuable model, a swollen battery, or a repair where handling and sealing are concerns. A quote may only be available after inspection, and the repair offered may not be a battery-only job.

Independent repair shop

A specialist may be able to repair an older or unsupported model, but parts quality, experience and sealing practices vary. Before authorizing work, ask:

  • What warranty covers the part and labor?
  • What happens if the display, rear cover, sensor or another component is damaged during opening?
  • Will you guarantee a water-resistance rating, or advise treating the watch as non-water-resistant?
  • Is the quote all-inclusive, and can you return the old battery?

There is no reliable universal US price for this repair in the cited sources. A shop quote depends on the model, parts, labor and any additional damage or sealing work.

DIY repair

DIY may make sense for an experienced electronics repairer with a supported older model, a correctly matched part and a willingness to accept the risk. It is a poor first project if you need dependable water resistance or have never opened a sealed electronic device. Do not attempt DIY on a swollen, hot or physically damaged battery.

Procedures differ by model. iFixit’s original Galaxy Watch guide starts with four Tri-point #00 rear screws; its Watch5 guide includes disconnecting display and button-related flex cables. Follow an exact-model guide rather than treating those examples as interchangeable instructions.

What the repair involves

Depending on the model, a repair typically means powering down and opening the watch, disconnecting rear sensors or other internal cables, releasing the battery adhesive, fitting the correct cell, replacing damaged sealing material, and carefully reconnecting and reassembling everything. A repairer should then check charging, power-on, buttons, touchscreen, sensors, vibration, microphone, speaker and wireless connections.

Model-specific tools may include precision screwdrivers, plastic opening picks, tweezers and replacement gasket or adhesive. Avoid metal prying tools near the battery and flex cables, and avoid excessive heat. Do not reuse a visibly stretched or damaged seal. A successful power-on does not show that the case is sealed.

Water resistance after opening the watch

Unless a repaired watch has been properly resealed and its water resistance verified, treat it as non-water-resistant. Opening the case creates a sealing risk. A replacement gasket or adhesive may help restore the physical seal, but it does not prove the watch meets its original rating; that requires suitable testing.

Samsung describes water resistance as limited rather than indestructible: impacts, pressure, temperature changes and other conditions can weaken it. Ratings and stated conditions differ by model. Samsung lists several Galaxy Watch generations for use under up to 5 feet of water for up to 30 minutes, while it describes the Galaxy Watch Ultra separately with 10 ATM and IP68 ratings and conditions for submersion up to 100 meters. Those model-specific ratings are not a guarantee for a watch that has been opened or damaged. Review Samsung’s water-resistance guidance.

Repair or replace?

Decide using the watch’s condition and your actual replacement options, not just the price of a battery part. A battery-only repair will not fix a failed charging coil, damaged motherboard, cracked display or faulty sensor.

Your situation More sensible next step
Battery is swollen, hot, smoking or physically damaged Stop using it and arrange professional service; do not DIY.
Watch may be under warranty or a protection plan Check coverage before opening it or paying for repair.
Recent, valuable Watch7, Watch8 or Ultra Get a Samsung or experienced specialist assessment before considering DIY.
Older Watch4 or Watch5 in otherwise good condition, and you have repair experience Compare the part, tools and risk against a professional quote; DIY may be reasonable if you accept the sealing limitations.
Cracked glass, damaged rear cover, charging fault or liquid exposure Request a diagnosis before buying a battery.
Multiple faults, unavailable parts or a repair quote close to replacement value Compare repair with a used, refurbished or newer watch.
You rely on the watch’s water resistance Prefer professional service with explicit sealing verification, or replace the watch.

As a comparison benchmark—not a repair quote or street-price guarantee—Samsung’s June 2026 US MSRP sheet lists Watch7 Bluetooth models at $249.99 for 40mm and $279.99 for 44mm, and Watch7 LTE at $299.99 and $329.99 respectively. The sheet lists Watch8 Bluetooth at $349.99–$379.99, Watch8 LTE at $399.99–$429.99, Watch8 Classic at $499.99 Bluetooth or $549.99 LTE, and Galaxy Watch Ultra at $649.99. These are manufacturer suggested retail prices; current sale prices may differ. See the June 2026 Samsung US wearable MSRP sheet.

For another limited cost reference, iFixit listed Watch4 replacement batteries at $24.99 when its parts catalog was checked for this guide. That is a part price, not the total repair cost; tools, shipping, sealing materials and labor are additional, and prices can change. Check the catalog for current model-specific availability.

If the battery is swollen

A lifted display or rear cover can indicate a swollen battery. Treat it as a safety problem, not a routine DIY repair.

  • Stop charging and using the watch. Do not press the case or display back into place.
  • Do not puncture, bend, crush, heat or aggressively pry against the battery. Keep the watch away from flammable materials.
  • Arrange professional service or follow local battery and electronics-disposal guidance.
  • If the watch is hot, smoking, hissing or emitting an odor, move away and contact emergency or hazardous-materials services as appropriate.

iFixit’s original Galaxy Watch guide advises reducing a swollen or worn battery below 25% charge before disassembly to reduce thermal-event risk. That advice is for disassembly guidance, not a reason to charge or open a visibly swollen, hot or otherwise unsafe watch yourself.
