Apple’s “Awe Dropping” event took place on September 9, 2025. It introduced four iPhones—including the new iPhone Air—three Apple Watches and AirPods Pro 3. The event is now a historical recap: the products went on sale September 19, 2025, and the launch prices below are not verified current prices.
What Apple announced at the September 9 event
Apple presented a broad lineup rather than a single iPhone refresh: a new mainstream phone, a thin design-led model, two Pro phones, watches for three different audiences and updated earbuds. Apple’s event announcement is archived in its September product recap.
| Category | Models | What distinguishes them |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone | iPhone 17 | ProMotion display, A19 chip and upgraded cameras in the mainstream model. |
| iPhone | iPhone Air | Thin-and-light design, with a more limited rear-camera system than the Pro phones. |
| iPhone | iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max | A19 Pro performance and higher-end camera systems; Pro Max adds a larger display and battery. |
| Apple Watch | Series 11 | Broad everyday health and fitness feature set, including sleep score and hypertension notifications where available. |
| Apple Watch | SE 3 | Lower-cost entry point with an S10 chip, Always-On display and wrist-temperature sensing. |
| Apple Watch | Ultra 3 | Rugged outdoor positioning, satellite features and Apple’s longest stated watch battery life of this lineup. |
| Earbuds | AirPods Pro 3 | Updated fit, noise cancellation, workout heart-rate sensing and Live Translation support with compatible equipment. |
Apple announced the lineup on September 9; the iPhones and watches were available in stores September 19. AirPods Pro 3 also arrived September 19, according to Apple’s store availability announcement.
Which iPhone fits which buyer?
iPhone 17: the mainstream choice
The iPhone 17 has a 6.3-inch Super Retina XDR display with ProMotion, an A19 chip, and 256GB or 512GB of storage. Its rear cameras are a 48MP Fusion Main camera with optical-quality 2x telephoto and a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide camera. The Center Stage front camera can take photos up to 18MP; Apple also lists front-camera 4K HDR video and Dual Capture, which records from front and rear cameras at once.

Apple says Ceramic Shield 2 offers three times better scratch resistance than the previous generation; that is Apple’s comparison claim, not a guarantee against damage. The five colors are black, lavender, mist blue, sage and white. Apple announced a U.S. launch price from $799, including a $30 connectivity discount that required activation with an eligible carrier. It should not be read as an unconditional handset price. See Apple’s iPhone 17 announcement for the launch specifications and qualification.
On specifications alone, the iPhone 17 is the sensible starting point for someone who wants an updated display, ample base storage and two capable rear cameras without paying for Pro hardware. That is a buying interpretation, not a result from independent camera or performance testing.
iPhone Air: design first
Apple named this phone iPhone Air, not “iPhone 17 Air.” Its defining idea is a thin, light body, paired with A19 Pro-based performance positioning. The trade-off is a single rear-camera system rather than the multi-camera flexibility of the Pro models; a slim design also leaves less room for hardware than a thicker phone. Apple’s iPhone Air announcement describes its design and configuration.
Consider Air if thinness and handling matter more than having multiple camera options or maximizing battery capacity. If your phone is a frequent camera, video or all-day work tool, compare its real-world battery needs and camera limitations against the standard and Pro models before choosing it.
iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max: camera and capacity priorities
Both Pro models use Apple’s A19 Pro chip and a higher-end camera system. The Pro Max is the larger option, with a bigger display and greater battery capacity; the Pro is the choice for buyers seeking Pro features in a smaller body. Apple’s Pro announcement details the design, materials, cameras and video features.

- Choose iPhone 17 Pro Max if the largest screen and battery capacity matter enough to accept the bigger device.
- Skip the Pro premium if your use is primarily messaging, browsing and ordinary photos; the iPhone 17 already has ProMotion and two 48MP rear cameras.
The event materials establish the Pro models’ distinctions but do not establish current U.S. retail prices. Carrier credits and trade-ins can change the effective cost, but eligibility, installment terms and qualifying plans matter; compare the final total rather than a headline credit.
Apple Watch Series 11, SE 3 and Ultra 3
The three-watch lineup is best understood by intended use: SE 3 for everyday essentials at a lower price, Series 11 for a broader health and fitness mix, and Ultra 3 for demanding outdoor use. Apple’s September recap covers the three models and their headline features.
| Model | Headline features | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Watch SE 3 | S10 chip, Always-On display, wrist-temperature sensing and updated health, fitness, connectivity and safety features. | Everyday smartwatch use and core fitness or safety functions on a tighter budget. |
| Apple Watch Series 11 | Sleep score, hypertension notifications subject to regulatory and regional availability, and up to 24 hours of battery life according to Apple. | A broad health and fitness feature set without the Ultra’s rugged outdoor emphasis. |
| Apple Watch Ultra 3 | Satellite emergency SOS, messaging and location sharing; Apple’s largest watch display and up to 42 hours of battery life. | Outdoor activities where ruggedness, longer stated endurance or satellite functions are useful. |
Series 11: health insights have limits
Apple announced Series 11 from $399 in the U.S. at launch and claimed up to 24 hours of battery life. It also described the display as twice as scratch-resistant. Those are Apple’s launch claims; battery life varies with use, and scratch resistance does not mean scratch-proof. The Series 11 announcement said hypertension-notification clearance from the FDA and other regulators was expected during September 2025. Availability depends on country, regulatory status, device and software, so check the feature’s current local availability rather than assuming it works everywhere.

SE 3: value without assuming every Series feature
Apple highlighted the S10 chip, Always-On display and wrist-temperature sensing for SE 3. It is the value-oriented model, not simply a Series 11 at a discount: choose it for everyday smartwatch functions and fitness basics, not on the assumption that it includes every premium health sensor or feature. The event recap does not establish every model-by-model omission, so check the current specifications for any particular sensor, material or connectivity option you need.
Ultra 3: satellite tools are not a rescue guarantee
Apple lists Emergency SOS via satellite, Messages via satellite and location sharing via satellite, alongside up to 42 hours of battery life. These are intended for supported regions and conditions, including a suitable view of the sky; satellite messaging is not a guarantee of connection or rescue. Choose Ultra for outdoor activity, endurance and rugged use, not just its appearance. For notifications, health tracking and everyday workouts, a smaller standard watch may be a better fit.

For watchOS 26, Apple lists compatibility with Apple Watch Series 6 or later, Apple Watch SE 2 or later, and all Apple Watch Ultra models; an iPhone 11 or later running iOS 26 is required. Apple said iOS 26 and watchOS 26 became available September 15, 2025. These requirements matter when pairing a new watch with an older iPhone.
AirPods Pro 3: what changed and what requires a compatible iPhone
AirPods Pro 3 add an updated fit, workout heart-rate sensing, hearing-health capabilities and Live Translation. Apple claims up to four times more noise reduction than the original AirPods Pro. That comparison is Apple’s claim and is against the first-generation model, not an independent test or a direct claim about AirPods Pro 2. The AirPods Pro 3 announcement describes the feature set.

Heart-rate sensing can support workout tracking, including tracking more than 50 workout types through the Fitness app on iPhone. Apple describes extended battery life but the event materials do not supply a figure suitable for a direct numeric comparison.
Live Translation is not a standalone earbud feature: Apple’s iOS 26 feature documentation requires compatible AirPods, current firmware and an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone. Supported languages and functions vary by region and feature. The same documentation lists some related translation support for AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods 4 with ANC, so translation alone does not make Pro 3 an automatic upgrade. See Apple’s iOS 26 feature availability document and verify language and device support.

Apple’s launch announcement also described trade-in credits of $200–$700 for qualifying iPhone 13-or-newer devices through Apple Trade In, and up to $1,100 through select carrier offers under stated conditions. Those launch-era offers are not current quotes. Before buying, check the live iPhone store, Apple Watch store and AirPods Pro store. A carrier credit may require a qualifying plan, eligible trade-in, installment agreement or service commitment.

Factor in the total cost: watch cellular service may require a separate carrier plan, and the right band, case, charger or accessory must fit the exact model. Check eSIM support with your carrier before buying an eSIM-only iPhone for travel; Apple said those versions would be sold in the U.S. and various other markets.
Should you upgrade from what you already own?
From an existing iPhone
A recent iPhone that already meets your needs is not made obsolete by this event. Upgrade when you specifically want the new display or camera system, need more storage, or value the Air’s thin design or Pro models’ camera and capacity advantages. If Apple Intelligence is your sole reason, first check whether your current device supports the particular feature you want; software features are not automatically exclusive to new hardware. Avoid basing the decision on a carrier headline until you have confirmed the trade-in value, plan and payment obligations.
From an existing Apple Watch
SE 3 makes sense for a value-focused buyer who wants the newer everyday feature mix. Series 11 is the balanced choice for broader health insights, while Ultra 3 is for outdoor users who can use its ruggedness, battery capacity or satellite functions. A watch upgrade is less compelling if your current model handles your fitness, notifications and health needs; confirm compatibility with your iPhone and regional access to the health features you want.
From AirPods Pro 2
Pro 3 is most relevant if its revised fit, workout heart-rate sensing or updated noise cancellation addresses a real need. Translation features overlap with some older compatible AirPods, so confirm exact device support before upgrading for that alone. Compare current sale prices and check charging-case and accessory compatibility rather than assuming older accessories fit.
Quick Recap
Compatibility checks before buying
- Health: Hypertension notifications and other health functions can depend on regulation, country, watch model and software.
- Apple Intelligence and translation: Hardware, operating-system version, firmware, region and language support all matter.
- Satellite: Regional availability and sky visibility affect satellite functions; they are not guaranteed connectivity.
- iPhone and watch pairing: watchOS 26 requires an iPhone 11 or later running iOS 26.
- Pricing: Distinguish a launch price from a current price, and an advertised carrier credit from your actual total cost.
