Its familiar design keeps faith with the original 1972 Royal Oak 5402, while its main change is inside: the newer Calibre 7121 replaces the earlier movement. Here’s what AP confirms about the watch, and what a dated independent video review says about the transition.
What is the Royal Oak Jumbo 16202ST?
The specific steel anniversary model is reference 16202ST.OO.1240ST.01, which Audemars Piguet names the Royal Oak “Jumbo” Extra-Thin “50th Anniversary.” AP presents it as a tribute to the original Royal Oak 5402 from 1972. The manufacturer describes a hand-finished steel body and a Bleu Nuit, Nuage 50 “Petite Tapisserie” dial. The 2022 anniversary model was fitted with a rhodium-toned pink-gold oscillating weight bearing a 50-year reference. Audemars Piguet’s product page identifies the reference and its design details.
AP’s own wording captures the design’s historical intent: “This ‘Jumbo’ model pays tribute to the original Royal Oak 5402 from 1972 with its body of hand-finished steel and its Bleu Nuit, Nuage 50 ‘Petite Tapisserie’ dial.”
What changed from the 15202ST?
The 16202 is the 15202’s successor, introduced in 2022 for the Royal Oak’s 50th anniversary. AP’s historical account identifies Calibre 7121 as the new movement in that generation. The model’s significance is therefore less a visual reset than a mechanical revision beneath a deliberately continuous design.

| Aspect | 16202ST | 15202ST |
|---|---|---|
| Place in the line | Introduced in 2022 as the 50th-anniversary successor to the 15202, according to AP’s history. | Predecessor to the 16202, according to AP’s history. |
| Movement | Calibre 7121, identified by AP as the new movement for the 16202 generation. | Calibre not stated in the cited AP historical account or Monochrome video description. |
| Visual continuity | Steel case and Bleu Nuit, Nuage 50 “Petite Tapisserie” dial documented by AP for the anniversary model. | Monochrome’s 2022 comparison characterizes the visual changes between generations as subtle. |
AP’s history of the Royal Oak Jumbo models establishes the succession and new calibre. For the predecessor’s exact movement specification and a complete side-by-side spec comparison, the cited material does not provide enough detail to state those values reliably.
What does the Calibre 7121 bring?
Monochrome Watches’ video review, published on 2022-01-26, compares the 16202ST with the 15202ST and discusses the 7121’s longer power reserve, higher operating frequency and quick-set date. Those are observations from Monochrome’s dated review, not specifications quantified in the AP material cited here; no reserve duration or frequency figure is established by the source descriptions. The video provides useful context for why the movement change matters, while AP’s historical account independently confirms the calibre’s introduction.
