The best GMT watch depends first on how you need to use its second time zone. If you travel across time zones, look for a movement that lets you jump the local hour hand independently. If you stay put and monitor another time zone, an independently adjustable 24-hour GMT hand may suit you better. Check the exact reference’s manual: “traveler” and “caller” are useful descriptions, but not standardized labels.
How a GMT watch displays a second time zone
A GMT watch adds a 24-hour hand to the usual hour and minute hands. Read that hand against a 24-hour scale—often printed on the dial or a rotating bezel—to tell whether the second time zone is in the morning or evening. Some watches let the bezel be shifted to interpret the display for another zone. The basic arrangement and two-zone use are described by Citizen and Rolex.

Choose the setting behavior for your routine
For frequent travel: independently jumping local hour hand
On a traveler-style GMT, the local hour hand can be moved in one-hour increments without stopping the watch or changing the 24-hour hand’s home-time indication. That makes it convenient to update local time after landing while keeping a reference to home time. Before buying, verify that the specific watch behaves this way in its official instructions; product names alone do not establish it.
For tracking a remote time zone: independently adjustable GMT hand
On a caller- or office-style GMT, the 24-hour hand adjusts independently. This can be useful if you remain in one time zone but want to read the time elsewhere, such as at a family member’s home or a remote office. Terminology varies between sellers and guides, so confirm which hand moves independently for the exact reference. These functional distinctions are summarized in current buying guides, including Watchfinder and Hodinkee.

Assess fit, legibility and practical trade-offs
Case dimensions and comfort
Diameter and thickness are useful starting points, not a guarantee of fit. The cited Citizen NB603 measures 41.0 mm across and 13.5 mm thick; the cited TUDOR reference is 41 mm across and 14.6 mm thick. Compare the dimensions with a watch you already find comfortable and consider how the case sits on your wrist. The cited sources do not provide comparable lug-width figures, so try the exact configuration where possible.
Time-zone reading and bezel use
Check that the 24-hour hand and scale are easy for you to read at a glance. A rotating 24-hour bezel can change how you interpret the hand and may let you follow another zone, depending on the watch’s design and instructions. Citizen describes its NB603 bidirectional bezel as capable of displaying a third time zone. Do not assume that every GMT bezel works the same way; follow the model’s manual.

Power system and upkeep
The examples use different power systems: Seiko’s cited Kinetic caliber is charged by body movement, while the Citizen and TUDOR examples are mechanical. Their stated durations—approximately six months from a full charge for the Seiko, about 50 hours for the Citizen and about 70 hours for the TUDOR—describe different systems and should not be read as an accuracy ranking. Citizen cautions that mechanical-watch daily accuracy can vary with conditions of use. Review each maker’s service guidance and consider whether you prefer a watch that needs winding or regular wear to stay powered.

Water resistance and materials
The cited TUDOR is specified to 200 m and the Citizen to 10 BAR. A rating is a specification, not a blanket guarantee of suitability for every water activity or condition. Check the manufacturer’s guidance for the exact reference and intended use. Crystal, case, bracelet or strap are separate considerations; choose the configuration and materials that fit how you will wear and care for the watch.

Specifications and configurations can differ within a model family, while price and stock depend on market and date. TUDOR explicitly notes that suggested prices may change, and the cited page’s euro pricing is regional rather than a universal current price. Confirm the reference number, configuration, local price, warranty and seller status with the manufacturer or an authorized retailer before buying. The cited Seiko page also does not establish that the Kinetic example is currently available in every market.
Why GMT watches became a distinct category
Rolex dates the GMT-Master’s launch to 1955 and describes it as serving two-time-zone needs. The brand says the GMT-Master II arrived in 1982 with independent adjustment of the hour hand. These are Rolex’s own historical accounts, not an independent evaluation of the watches’ performance. Rolex history.
