For Patek Philippe president Thierry Stern, family continuity begins with passion for watchmaking—not with an automatic right of succession. In a May 2026 interview, he said a leader must love fine watchmaking and understand a watch in detail, from its movement to its clasp. That distinction helps explain what “family” means in the story of Patek Philippe: stewardship expressed through close engagement with the product and the standards behind it.
What Thierry Stern means by family and watchmaking
“People often say that it’s about family transmission, and of course it is, but before anything else, it’s about passion,” Stern told Italian Watch Spotter on 10 May 2026. He described a leader’s responsibility as requiring a complete understanding of the watch: “the movement, the case, the dial, the hands, the bracelet, the clasp, every single detail.”
In that account, family ownership is not the whole story. The point is to carry forward knowledge of how the watches are made and what makes them meet the company’s expectations. Patek Philippe’s official family history expresses a related principle: “At Patek Philippe, successors must share not only blood but values, visions, and understanding.”
How the Stern family came to lead Patek Philippe
The following chronology is based on Patek Philippe’s official history, which presents the company’s account of its own leadership and development.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- 1932: Charles and Jean Stern acquired Patek Philippe. They owned Cadrans Stern Frères, a dial maker that had supplied the watch company. The Sterns appointed watchmaker Jean Pfister to lead and brought movement production in-house.
- 1935–1958: Henri Stern joined the company in 1935, established the Henri Stern Watch Agency in New York in 1945, and returned to Geneva, where he became board chairman in 1958.
- 1963–1993: Philippe Stern joined the New York agency in 1963, returned to Geneva in 1966, and became president in 1993. His projects included centralizing production, opening the Patek Philippe Museum in 2001, and establishing the Patek Philippe Seal in 2009.
- 1990 onward: Thierry Stern joined Patek Philippe in 1990, became vice president in 2003, and has been president since 2009, according to the company chronology.
Patek Philippe says the family’s pursuit of greater independence in production remains central to its strategy. That background gives “transmission” a practical dimension: preserving values while maintaining close knowledge of the work itself.
Why Stern personally listens to minute repeaters
A minute repeater makes time audible through chimes for the hours, quarters, and minutes. It also gives a particularly clear example of how Stern connects leadership with quality control. In the 2026 interview, he said he listens to every minute repeater before it leaves the manufacture, judging the harmony of the chimes, gong vibration, duration, and tone.

Stern said he learned by watching his father assess the sound. If a watch does not satisfy him, he said he will hold it even when delivery timing is pressing, and work directly with watchmakers if it needs rework. Patek Philippe’s official history independently states that Stern performs the final validation of every minute repeater’s chimes.
What has been said about the next generation
Stern’s comments describe an open possibility, not a confirmed succession plan. In May 2026, he said one of his sons was already working with him and the other might join in the coming years. He framed their involvement as a choice: parents can offer children the opportunity to learn and explore, but the children must choose their own path.

In a CNA Luxury interview published 3 June 2025, Stern said his father taught him when to push boundaries and when to hold back, and that he was passing that understanding to his sons, Adrien and Tristan. CNA reported at that time that Adrien had just started at the company and Tristan was finishing university. These are dated descriptions of their positions, not a guarantee about who will eventually lead the company.
Continuity without standing still
Family stewardship does not mean keeping every design unchanged. In its 2025 interview, CNA Luxury described the collection through traditional, sporty, and highly complicated watches, naming the Calatrava, Nautilus, Cubitus, Twenty~4, and complicated references as examples. Those names reflect that interview’s context, not a current catalogue or an assurance of availability.

Stern told CNA: “The ability to adapt while maintaining our identity is what distinguishes us because not everyone can do this.” For a reader comparing the kinds of watches discussed, the useful distinctions are whether a design is traditional or sporty, whether its function is time-only or complicated, and how far materials or aesthetics change while retaining a recognizable identity. The interview establishes Stern’s view of adaptation, not market performance or the desirability of any particular model.

Wallpaper* also reported that the preceding Tokyo exhibition attracted 74,000 visitors. That figure is the publication’s reported attendance, not an independently audited total. Together, the exhibition and Stern’s account of hands-on quality checks offer two different ways to see the same idea: a family legacy is maintained through both public presentation and detailed work behind the finished watch.
