The best ’90s watches are not one objective ranking: the decade produced colorful everyday digitals, capable tool watches and high-end designs with very different appeal. This shortlist focuses on models and milestones with clear historical documentation, led by Casio and G-SHOCK. It distinguishes original 1990s watches from today’s watches that borrow the decade’s look.
How this shortlist is chosen
These picks represent distinct uses and design ideas rather than a universal ranking. The strongest documented examples here come from Casio’s official histories, with the Frogman’s historical distinction attributed to specialist watch publication Fratello. The list is therefore a focused cross-section, not a claim to cover every notable watch from the decade.
Notable watches and milestones from the 1990s
G-SHOCK Frogman DW-6300-1A: the specialist diver
Fratello’s 2021 buying guide dates the Frogman DW-6300-1A to 1993 and identifies it as the first ISO-certified 200-meter G-SHOCK diving watch. Its place on this list rests on that specialist-source account and its purpose-built dive-watch identity, rather than a claim that it is the best diver for every buyer. Read Fratello’s Frogman guide.
BABY-G DW-520: a smaller, more colorful G-SHOCK
Casio’s UK history names the DW-520 as the first BABY-G, released in December 1994. The watch brought shock resistance to a smaller case, with pop colors and surfing motifs aimed at teen girls. It is a defining choice for readers drawn to the decade’s playful digital-watch style. Casio’s BABY-G history.

Casio FKT-100: early radio-controlled timekeeping
Introduced in 1995, the FKT-100 was Casio’s first radio-controlled watch, according to the company’s history. It corrected its time using standard-time radio signals carrying information from atomic clocks. Casio says those clocks are “typically accurate to one second every 100,000 years”; that figure describes the clocks behind the signals, not the FKT-100’s own accuracy. The model is a historically interesting pick for anyone who values practical timekeeping innovation. Casio’s watchmaking history.
Casio MR-G MRG-100: G-SHOCK in full metal
Casio introduced the MRG-100 in 1996 as the first model in its MR-G line, adapting G-SHOCK shock resistance to a full-metal design. Casio says special buffering between the bezel and case helped preserve that shock resistance. It marks a shift from the resin-and-color associations of G-SHOCK toward a more substantial metal look. Want the ’90s look in a new watch?
Casio’s present-day G-SHOCK 90s Sporty Collection draws its colors from the DW-001, which Casio says went on sale in 1994. The collection is a contemporary style reference, not proof that every model is a reissue or an original period watch. Check the specific model’s description if you want to know whether it reproduces any particular vintage design. Casio’s 90s Sporty Collection page.
Choosing between a vintage original and a modern homage
If you want the original watch, assess the individual example rather than relying on the model name alone. Vintage condition, authenticity, service history and availability can vary substantially, and the evidence here does not establish current prices or stock. Ask for clear photographs, check that the case and functions match the claimed model, and seek a qualified watchmaker’s assessment when condition or service needs are uncertain.

A modern watch inspired by the decade is the more straightforward choice if the priority is the look rather than owning a period example. Confirm the exact model and its functions before buying; a shared color palette does not establish that it has the same construction or features as a 1990s watch.
