The Grand Seiko SLGW007 is a 38.6mm Evolution 9 dress watch with a hand-wound, 10-beat Caliber 9SA4, an approximately 80-hour power reserve and a textured navy dial inspired by moonlit white-birch bark. Its 9.95mm-thick steel case keeps the high-frequency movement wearable under a cuff, while the watch’s “Splash Resistant” rating makes it a formal, not aquatic, companion.
What is the Grand Seiko SLGW007?
The SLGW007 belongs to Grand Seiko’s Evolution 9 Collection. Grand Seiko describes it as “This 10-beat, manual-winding mechanical watch is based on the ‘Evolution 9 Style.’” The design’s visual reference is the Hiraniwa Plateau in Iwate Prefecture, where the brand says a white-birch forest extends across roughly 1,000 acres. That acreage is an undated brand description, not a newly dated survey figure.
Rather than using a bright silver birch motif, the dial is rendered in textured navy and blue, suggesting white-birch bark seen under moonlight. The result is a dress-watch profile with a more atmospheric color and surface than a conventional plain dial.

Caliber 9SA4: the defining technical choice
Manual winding and an 80-hour reserve
Caliber 9SA4 is a manually wound movement, so the crown is part of the daily interaction rather than an automatic rotor doing the winding for you. Grand Seiko states an approximately 80-hour power reserve, giving the SLGW007 a useful weekend margin when it is fully wound. A power-reserve indicator shows how much running time remains.

What “Hi-Beat 36000” means
The movement runs at 36,000 vibrations per hour, or 10 beats per second. The higher frequency is the source of Grand Seiko’s “Hi-Beat 36000” designation and is a central differentiator from slower-beat mechanical dress watches. Frequency alone does not guarantee a specific result on the wrist, but it explains why the 9SA4 is the technical centerpiece of this model.
How to read the accuracy figures
Grand Seiko states a mean daily rate of +5 to -3 seconds per day and normal-use accuracy of +8 to -1 seconds per day. The mean-rate figure is measured before casing in six positions over 12 days under controlled conditions; normal-use performance can vary with position, winding state, temperature, magnetism and how the watch is worn. These are manufacturer specifications, not a promise that every owner will see the same daily result.

Case, proportions and dial
At 38.6mm across and 45.0mm from lug to lug, the SLGW007 sits in a compact dress-watch range. Its 9.95mm thickness is just under 10mm, a practical dimension for slipping beneath a shirt cuff while still accommodating a high-frequency, hand-wound caliber and display back. The listed 74g weight and leather strap keep the package relatively light for a steel mechanical watch.
The box-shaped sapphire crystal adds the raised profile associated with vintage-inspired dress watches. An inner anti-reflective coating is specified, while the screw-secured, see-through back allows the wearer to view Caliber 9SA4. The dial’s navy texture is the watch’s main visual statement: its bark-like pattern is intended to recall moonlight on the white-birch landscape rather than reproduce a literal white dial.

Water and magnetic resistance: what the labels actually allow
The specification says “Splash Resistant,” not a meter rating for swimming or diving. Treat that wording as protection for incidental splashes and keep the watch away from bathing, swimming, high-pressure water and prolonged wet conditions. Grand Seiko lists magnetic resistance of 4,800 A/m; strong magnetic fields can still affect a mechanical watch, so avoid placing it directly on powerful speakers, magnetic clasps or similar sources.

- Choose it for: a compact steel dress watch, a distinctive textured blue dial, hand-winding ownership and an approximately 80-hour reserve.
- Consider the trade-offs: the watch is splash resistant rather than swim-ready, the 9SA4 requires manual winding, and the regional luxury price is substantial.
- Strap replacement: the listed band width is 20mm. A replacement 20mm leather watch strap still needs compatible lug geometry and clasp or buckle dimensions, so confirm those measurements before ordering.
First-look verdict
The SLGW007’s appeal is unusually coherent: a thin, 38.6mm Evolution 9 case frames a moonlit-birch-inspired navy dial, while the hand-wound Hi-Beat 9SA4 supplies the technical identity. The approximately 80-hour reserve, power indicator and under-10mm profile make it a serious everyday dress-watch proposition, but the “Splash Resistant” rating and premium regional pricing define its limits. It is best understood as a finely specified formal watch whose movement and dial—not sports capability—are the reason to buy it.
