The Rolex GMT-Master began in 1955 as a navigation watch for the age of intercontinental flight. Its successor, the GMT-Master II, arrived in 1982 with a key change: the local-hour hand could be adjusted independently, making it easier to change local time while keeping a second time-zone reference. Later milestones reshaped the watch’s signature bezel, from ceramic in 2005 to two-colour Cerachrom inserts in several combinations.
Why Rolex created the GMT-Master
Rolex launched the GMT-Master in 1955, as intercontinental air travel was expanding. It was designed as a navigation aid for professionals crossing the globe, and Rolex’s corporate history connects its development with the rise of transcontinental flights and its use as the official watch of Pan American World Airways (Pan Am).

The original design made the second time-zone function legible at a glance. Its distinctive two-colour bezel divided the 24-hour scale into daytime and night-time hours. The colour contrast was functional as well as recognizable: it helped a wearer distinguish the two halves of a day while reading the 24-hour hand.
How a GMT-Master reads two time zones
The system combines the ordinary time display with a separate 24-hour indication. The conventional hour and minute hands show local time; an arrow-tipped hand completes one revolution every 24 hours. The bidirectional bezel carries a 24-hour scale and can be rotated to read another time zone against that hand.

With the bezel in its neutral position, the 24-hour hand indicates a reference time, such as home time. Rotating the bezel changes the time-zone offset used to read an alternative zone. The bezel therefore adds a second reading without changing the movement’s displayed local time.
What changed when Rolex introduced the GMT-Master II?
Rolex introduced the GMT-Master II in 1982. The defining change was its movement: the local-hour hand could be set independently of the other hands. A traveller could move the local hour forward or backward to match the destination while leaving the minute hand and 24-hour reference display undisturbed. Rolex named the optimized model GMT-Master II to distinguish it from the GMT-Master.
| Feature | GMT-Master | GMT-Master II |
|---|---|---|
| Introduced | 1955 | 1982 |
| Local-time adjustment | The original movement did not offer the GMT-Master II’s independently adjustable local-hour hand. | The local-hour hand adjusts independently of the other hands. |
| Core GMT display | Conventional hands, an arrow-tipped 24-hour hand and a rotatable 24-hour bezel. | Uses the same basic combination of local-time hands, 24-hour hand and rotatable bezel. |
| Practical distinction | Changing the local-time display did not have the GMT-Master II’s independent-hour adjustment. | Local time can be changed while preserving the reference-time display. |
When did the GMT-Master get a ceramic bezel?
Rolex records 2005 as the year the GMT-Master II received the first ceramic bezel insert used on a Rolex watch. The company later gave its ceramic material the name Cerachrom in 2008. That shift marked a new materials chapter for the bezel, whose contrasting colours had been a defining element of the GMT-Master since its early years.

Making a two-colour insert from one piece of ceramic became a sequence of technical and design milestones. The combinations appeared on different metals and configurations; the colour pair alone does not identify a single case material or watch arrangement.
| Year | Bezel colour | Rolex model context | Common colour nickname |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2013 | Blue and black | Single-piece two-colour Cerachrom insert on an Oystersteel GMT-Master II. | Batman |
| 2014 | Red and blue | Two-colour insert introduced in 18 ct white gold. | Pepsi |
| 2018 | Brown and black | Presented on Everose gold and Everose Rolesor variants. | Root Beer |
| 2022 | Green and black | Introduced on an Oystersteel model with the crown on the left and date aperture at 9 o’clock. Rolex describes this as the only watch in its current catalogue with that configuration. | Sprite |
| 2023 | Grey and black | Introduced on yellow Rolesor and 18 ct yellow-gold variants. | Not stated in the Rolex milestone history cited here. |
Why are the bezels called Pepsi, Batman or Coke?
Pepsi, Batman and Coke are informal collector nicknames based on bezel colours, not the model names Rolex uses. Pepsi refers to red and blue; Batman to blue and black; Coke to red and black. The nickname is shorthand for a colour pairing, not a reliable way to identify a watch’s year, material or movement.
The Rolex milestones above date the blue/black and red/blue Cerachrom combinations to 2013 and 2014 respectively. They do not establish a date for a red/black Coke bezel, so that nickname should not be treated as evidence of a particular release year or ceramic generation.
From aviation instrument to travel-watch design
The GMT-Master’s history has two linked through-lines. Its original purpose was practical: pair local time with a 24-hour reference and make the day-night distinction clear for people crossing time zones. The GMT-Master II made destination-time changes more convenient through its independently adjustable local-hour hand. Later, Cerachrom extended the design story by bringing durable ceramic and increasingly varied two-colour inserts to the bezel.
The result is a watch family whose identity rests on more than its colours: the 24-hour hand and adjustable bezel provide the second-time-zone reading, while the independent local-hour adjustment is the defining mechanical difference of the GMT-Master II.
